༄༅། །ཐུབ་པའི་བསྟོད་པ་ཐབས་མཁས་ཐུགས་རྗེ་མ། །

Great Praise of the Ten Acts of the Buddha

༄༅། །ཐབས་མཁས་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཤཱཀྱའི་རིགས་སུ་འཁྲུངས། །

tab ké tuk jé shakyé rik su trung

With skilful means and compassion, you were born in the Shakya clan,

གཞན་གྱིས་མི་ཐུབ་བདུད་ཀྱི་དཔུང་འཇོམས་པ། །

shen gi mi tub dü ki pung jompa

Unconquerable by others, you vanquished Mara's hordes,

གསེར་གྱི་ལྷུན་པོ་ལྟ་བུར་བརྗིད་པའི་སྐུ། །

ser gi lhünpo tabur ji pé ku

Your physical form resplendent, like a mountain of gold.

ཤཱཀྱའི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཁྱོད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

shakyé gyalpo kyö la chak tsal lo

To you, the King of the Shakyas, I pay homage!

གང་གིས་དང་པོར་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་ནས། །

gang gi dangpor chang chub tuk kyé né

You I shall praise, who first awakened the mind of enlightenment,

བསོད་ནམས་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཚོགས་གཉིས་རྫོགས་མཛད་ཅིང༌། །

sönam yéshé tsog nyi dzog dzé ching

Then completed the accumulations of merit and wisdom,

དུས་འདིར་མཛད་པ་རྒྱ་ཆེན་འགྲོ་བ་ཡི། །

du dir dzépa gyachen dro wa yi

And now in this age, through the vast sway of your actions,

མགོན་གྱུར་ཁྱོད་ལ་བདག་གིས་བསྟོད་པར་བགྱི། །

gön gyur kyö la dag gi tö par gyi

Have become the lord and protector of living beings.

ལྷ་རྣམས་དོན་མཛད་འདུལ་བའི་དུས་མཁྱེན་ནས། །

lha nam dön dzé dülwé dü kyen né

Homage to you that, having taught the gods,

ལྷ་ལས་བབས་ནས་གླང་ཆེན་ལྟར་གཤེགས་ཤིང༌། །

lha lé bab né langchen tar shek shing

Knew the time had come to tame the human world, and

རིགས་ལ་གཟིགས་ནས་ལྷ་མོ་སྒྱུ་འཕྲུལ་མའི། །

rik la zikné lhamo gyu trül mé

Descending from the god realm like a great elephant,

ལྷུམས་སུ་ཞུགས་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

lhum su shyuk par dzé la chak tsal lo

Foresaw the family of your birth and entered the womb of Mayadevi.

ཟླ་བ་བཅུ་རྫོགས་ཤཱཀྱའི་སྲས་པོ་ནི། །

dawa chu dzok shakyé sépo ni

Homage to you, prince of the Shakyas, born after ten months

བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལུམྦིའི་ཚལ་དུ་བལྟམས་པའི་ཚེ། །

tashi lumbi tsal du tam pé tsé

In the auspicious Lumbini grove, where

ཚངས་དང་བརྒྱ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བཏུད་མཚན་མཆོག་ནི། །

tsang dang gya jin gyi tü tsan chok ni

Brahma and Indra revered you, your supreme marks

བྱང་ཆུབ་རིགས་སུ་ངེས་མཛད་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

chang chub rik su ngé dzé chak tsal lo

Proving you were destined to be enlightened.

གཞོན་ནུ་སྟོབས་ལྡན་མི་ཡི་སེང་གེ་དེས། །

shönu tobden mi yi sengé dé

Homage to you, lion among men, in all your youthful vigour,

ཨ་གྷ་མ་ག་དྷར་ནི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་བསྟན། །

agama gadar ni gyu tsal ten

Displaying your prowess in the games at Agha Magadha,

སྐྱེ་བོ་དྲེགས་པ་ཅན་རྣམས་ཚར་བཅད་ནས། །

kyéwo drekpa chen nam tsar ché né

Where you triumphed over the proud contestants,

འགྲན་ཟླ་མེད་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

dren da mépar dzé la chak tsal lo

So that not one could stand as your rival.

འཇིག་རྟེན་ཆོས་དང་མཐུན་པར་བྱ་བ་དང༌། །

jikten chö dang tün par jawa dang

Homage to you, who, to comply with worldly convention,

ཁ་ན་མ་ཐོ་སྤང་ཕྱིར་བཙུན་མོ་ཡི། །

khana ma to pang chir tsünmo yi

And avoid all misdeeds, took on a queen and courtiers

འཁོར་དང་ལྡན་མཛད་ཐབས་ལ་མཁས་པ་ཡིས། །

khor dang den dzé tab la ké pa yi

And by acting with such skilful means,

རྒྱལ་སྲིད་སྐྱོང་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

gyal si kyong war dzé la chak tsal lo

So you ruled the kingdom.

འཁོར་བའི་བྱ་བར་སྙིང་པོ་མེད་གཟིགས་ནས། །

khor wé jawar nying po mé zikné

Homage to you, who saw that samsara is wholly futile,

ཁྱིམ་ནས་བྱུང་སྟེ་མཁའ་ལ་གཤེགས་ནས་ཀྱང༌། །

kim né jung té ka la shek né kyang

Renounced the life of a householder,

མཆོད་རྟེན་རྣམ་དག་དྲུང་དུ་ཉིད་ལས་ཉིད། །

chöten namdak drung du nyi lé nyi

And, travelling through the sky,

རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

rabtu jungwar dzé la chak tsal lo

Ordained yourself before the Vishuddha Stupa.

བརྩོན་པས་བྱང་ཆུབ་སྒྲུབ་པར་དགོངས་ནས་ནི། །

tsön pé chang chub drubpar gongné ni

Homage to you, who, intent on persevering till enlightened,

ནཻ་རཉྫ་ནའི་འགྲམ་དུ་ལོ་དྲུག་ཏུ། །

nairanja né dram du lo druk tu

For six years practised austerities on the banks of the Nairanjana,

དཀའ་བ་སྤྱད་མཛད་བརྩོན་འགྲུས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་པས། །

kawa ché dzé tsöndrü tar chin pé

And taking diligence to its ultimate perfection,

བསམ་གཏན་མཆོག་བརྙེས་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

samten chok nyé dzé la chak tsal lo

Attained the supreme samadhi.

ཐོག་མ་མེད་ནས་འབད་པ་དོན་ཡོད་ཕྱིར། །

to ma méné bet pa dön yö chir

Homage to you, who, seeking to make meaningful

མ་ག་དྷ་ཡི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཤིང་དྲུང་དུ། །

magada yi chang choub shing drung du

All your efforts, made throughout beginningless time, sat

སྐྱིལ་ཀྲུང་མི་གཡོ་མངོན་པར་སངས་རྒྱས་ནས། །

kyil trung mi yo ngön par sangyé né

Unmoving in the vajra posture beneath the bodhi-tree in Magadha

བྱང་ཆུབ་རྫོགས་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

chang chup dzok par dzé la chak tsal lo

And awakened into true buddhahood, attaining perfect enlightenment.

ཐུགས་རྗེས་འགྲོ་ལ་མྱུར་དུ་གཟིགས་ནས་ནི། །

tukjé drola nyurdu zikné ni

Homage to you, who, in your compassion,

ཝ་ར་ཎཱ་སི་ལ་སོགས་གནས་མཆོག་ཏུ། །

varanasi la sokpa né chok tu

Gazed at once upon living beings, then

ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར་ནས་གདུལ་བྱ་རྣམས། །

chöki khorlo kor né dül ja nam

Turned the wheel of Dharma in sacred places like Varanasi,

ཐེག་པ་གསུམ་ལ་འགོད་མཛད་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

tekpa sum la gö dzé chak tsal lo

And established disciples in the three vehicles.

གཞན་གྱིས་རྒོལ་བ་ངན་པ་ཚར་བཅད་ཕྱིར། །

shen gi gölwa ngenpa tsar ché chir

Homage to you that destroyed evil-minded opponents,

མུ་སྟེགས་སྟོན་པ་དྲུག་དང་ལྷས་བྱིན་སོགས། །

mutek tönpa druk dang lhé jin sok

By defeating the six teachers of the tirthikas, Devadatta and the rest,

འཁོར་མོ་འཇིག་གི་ཡུལ་དུ་བདུད་རྣམས་བཏུལ། །

khormo jik gi yul du dünam tül

As well as the maras in Varanasi;¹

ཐུབ་པ་གཡུལ་ལས་རྒྱལ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

tubpa yül lé gyal la chak tsal lo

You were the mighty sage, victorious in battle.

སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་ན་དཔེ་མེད་ཡོན་ཏན་གྱི། །

sipa sum na pemé yönten gi

Homage to you, who performed great miracles in Shravasti,

མཉན་དུ་ཡོད་པར་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་ཆེན་པོ་བསྟན། །

nyen du yöpar cho trül chenpo ten

Unmatched in their splendour in all the three realms,

ལྷ་མི་འགྲོ་བ་ཀུན་གྱིས་རབ་མཆོད་པ། །

lhamo dro wa kün gyi rab chö pa

And through the offerings made by gods, humans and other beings,

བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

tenpa gyepar dzé la chak tsal lo

Caused the teachings to prosper and increase.

ལེ་ལོ་ཅན་རྣམས་ཆོས་ལ་བསྐུལ་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །

lelo chen nam chö la kül jé chir

Homage to you, who, to spur the lazy on to the Dharma,

རྩྭ་མཆོག་གྲོང་གི་ས་གཞི་གཙང་མ་རུ། །

tsa chok drong gi sa shyi tsang ma ru

Left your body, though immortal and like a vajra,

འཆི་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ་ལྟ་བུའི་སྐུ་གཤེགས་ནས། །

chimé dordjé tabü ku shek né

And passed into parinirvana

མྱ་ངན་འདའ་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

nya ngan da bar dzé la chak tsal lo

In the pure abode of Kushinagara.

ཡང་དག་ཉིད་དུ་འཇིག་པ་མེད་ཕྱིར་དང༌། །

yangdag nyi du jikpa mé chir dang

Homage to you, who, to show that you had not in reality perished,

མ་འོངས་སེམས་ཅན་བསོད་ནམས་ཐོབ་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །

ma ong sem chen sönam tob jé chir

And so that beings of the future could gain merit,

དེ་ཉིད་དུ་ནི་རིང་བསྲེལ་མང་སྤྲུལ་ནས། །

denyi du ni ringsel mangtrül né

Emanated a wealth of relics, and caused

སྐུ་གདུང་ཆ་བརྒྱད་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

kudung cha gyé dzé la chak tsal lo

Your remains to be divided into eight portions.
