A Sādhana of Noble Mañjuśrī, Supreme Deity of Deities

རབ་འབྱམས་རྒྱལ་བའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་གཅིག་བསྡུས་གར། །
མི་ཟད་རྒྱན་གྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་སྣང་བའི་མཛོད། །
ས་གསུམ་བླ་མ་འགྲོ་བའི་གཉེན་གཅིག་མཆོག །
གང་དང་དབྱེར་མེད་འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས་ལ་འདུད། །
Wisdom of the infinite buddhas all gathered into one,
Treasury of the wheels of inexhaustible adornments,
Foremost friend to all beings, teacher to all three worlds,
You who are inseparable from Mañjughoṣa, to you I bow!
དེ་ལ་འདིར་རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས་ཀྱི་སྒྲུབ་ཐབས་མདོར་བསྡུས་ཤིག་འབྲི་བ་ལ། སྦྱོར་དངོས་རྗེས་གསུམ་ལས།
Here I shall set down a brief method for accomplishing Noble Mañjughoṣa, consisting of preparation, main part and conclusion.
དང་པོ་ལའང་གཉིས་ཏེ། སྐྱབས་འགྲོ་སེམས་བསྐྱེད་དང་། ཡན་ལག་བདུན་པའོ།
The first part, the preparation, includes the refuge and bodhichitta and the seven branch practice.
དང་པོ་ནི།
1. Taking Refuge and Arousing Bodhichitta
ན་མོ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཆོས་ཚོགས་ཀུན་འདུས་པའི། །
namo sangye chö tsok kündüpé
Namo! I take refuge in Mañjughoṣa,
འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆི། །
jampalyang la kyab su chi
Embodiment of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
འགྲོ་རྣམས་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཐོབ་ཕྱིར་དུ། །
dro nam changchub tob chirdu
So that all beings may attain enlightenment,
འཇམ་དཔལ་བསྒྲུབ་ལ་བརྩོན་པར་བགྱི། །
jampal drub la tsönpar gyi
I shall exert myself in the practice of Mañjuśrī!
གཉིས་པ་ཡན་ལག་བདུན་པ་ནི།
2. The Seven Branch Practice
དངོས་བཤམས་ཡིད་སྤྲུལ་མཆོད་པའི་ཚོགས། །
ngö sham yitrul chöpé tsok
Plentiful gifts, both actual and imagined,
མི་ཟད་མཛོད་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོར་འབུལ། །
mizé dzö kyi khorlor bul
As an inexhaustible treasury, I offer.
ཞིང་གི་རྡུལ་སྙེད་ལུས་སྤྲུལ་ནས། །
zhing gi dul nyé lü trul né
Emanating bodies as numerous as atoms in the universe,
སྒོ་གསུམ་གུས་པས་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
go sum güpé chaktsal lo
I offer homage, as devotion fills my body, speech and mind.
བཅས་རང་ཁ་ན་མ་ཐོ་ཀུན། །
ché rang khana mato kün
All wrongs, whether naturally harmful or transgressions,
གནོང་ཞིང་འགྱོད་པའི་སེམས་ཀྱིས་བཤགས། །
nong zhing gyöpé sem kyi shak
I confess, my mind overflowing with regret and remorse.
དམིགས་མེད་ཡེ་ཤེས་དམ་པ་དང་། །
mikmé yeshe dampa dang
Genuine wisdom that is beyond all concepts,
བསོད་ནམས་དགེ་ལ་ཡི་རང་ངོ་། །
sönam gé la yi rang ngo
And ordinary merit too—in all forms of virtue, I rejoice!
རིགས་ཅན་རྣམས་ལ་གང་འཚམས་པར། །
rikchen nam la gang tsampar
In accordance with the capacities of beings,
ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར་བར་བསྐུལ། །
chö kyi khorlo korwar kul
Turn the wheel of Dharma, I implore you!
དམ་པ་མྱ་ངན་འདའ་བཞེད་རྣམས། །
dampa nya ngen da zhé nam
Great saints intent on passing into nirvana:
ཇི་སྲིད་བར་དུ་བཞུགས་སུ་གསོལ། །
jisi bardu zhuk su sol
Stay until the very ends of existence, I pray!
འདིས་མཚོན་དགེ་ཚོགས་ཇི་བསགས་པ། །
di tsön gé tsok ji sakpa
All the virtue this represents, all that has been amassed,
བླ་མེད་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཐོབ་ཕྱིར་བསྔོ། །
lamé changchub tob chir ngo
I dedicate towards unsurpassed enlightenment.
གཉིས་པ་དངོས་གཞིའི་རིམ་པ་ནི།
The Main Practice
རང་མདུན་ནམ་མཁར་འཇའ་འོད་ཀློང་། །
rang dün namkhar ja ö long
In the space before me, amidst an expanse of rainbow light,
པད་ཟླའི་གདན་ལ་སྐད་ཅིག་གིས། །
pé dé den la kechik gi
Upon seats of lotus and moon-disc, there instantly appears
འཕགས་མཆོག་རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས། །
pakchok jetsün jampal yang
The supreme and noble Mañjughoṣa,
ཞལ་གཅིག་ཕྱག་གཉིས་འཛུམ་ཞལ་ཅན། །
zhal chik chak nyi dzum zhalchen
With one face, two hands and a smiling expression.
ཕྱག་གཡས་རལ་གྲི་གཡོན་པདྨ། །
chak yé raldri yön pema
He wields a sword in his right hand, and clasps a lotus with his left.
ཞབས་གཉིས་སྐྱིལ་ཀྲུང་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་རྫོགས། །
zhab nyi kyiltrung longchö dzok
His two legs are crossed, and he in sambhogakāya form,
དར་དང་རིན་ཆེན་རྒྱན་གྱིས་སྤྲས། །
dar dang rinchen gyen gyi tré
His body bedecked with the silk and jewel adornments.
སྟོང་གསལ་འོད་ཀྱི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཅན། །
tong sal ö kyi kyilkhor chen
Empty yet appearing, with a mandala of light,
སངས་རྒྱས་བྱང་སེམས་གྲུབ་པའི་ཚོགས། །
sangye changsem drubpé tsok
He is encircled completely
རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཡོངས་སུ་བསྐོར་བར་བསམ། །
nam kyi yongsu korwar sam
By buddhas, bodhisattvas and accomplished adepts.
ཐུགས་དབུས་ཟླ་སྟེང་དྷཱིཿཡིག་ལས། །
tuk ü da teng dhih yik lé
In his heart’s centre, upon a lunar disc, is a syllable Dhīḥ,
འོད་འཕྲོས་བདག་ལ་ཐིམ་པ་ཡིས། །
ö trö dak la timpa yi
Radiating light, which dissolves into me.
མཆོག་ཐུན་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་ཐོབ་ནས། །
choktün ngödrub kün tob né
Through this, may I gain all supreme and ordinary siddhis,
སྒྲིབ་གཉིས་མུན་པ་ཀུན་སེལ་ཞིང་། །
drib nyi münpa kün sel zhing
May the darkness of the two veils be dispelled entirely,
ཤེས་བྱའི་གནས་རྣམས་མཁྱེན་པ་ཡི། །
shejé né nam khyenpa yi
May the eight treasures of perfect eloquence,
སྤོབས་པའི་གཏེར་བརྒྱད་གྲོལ་བ་དང་། །
pobpé ter gyé drolwa dang
Which are born of universal knowledge, be released,
དོན་གཉིས་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ་པར་ཤོག །
dön nyi lhün gyi drubpar shok
And may I spontaneously fulfill my own and others’ aims.
ཨོཾ་ཨཿ་ར་པ་ཙ་ན་དྷཱིཿ ཞེས་བཟླས་མཐར།
om ah ra pa tsa na dhih
oṃ arapacana dhīḥ
After reciting the mantra, continue the practice with:
གསུམ་པ་རྗེས་ཀྱི་རིམ་པ་ལ་བཞི་སྟེ།
Conclusion
This has four parts.
དང་པོ་མཆོད་བསྟོད་བྱ་བ་ནི།
1. Offering and Praise
སྣང་ཞིང་སྲིད་པའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ཀུན། །
nang zhing sipé chö nam kün
The whole of appearance and existence,
ཏིང་འཛིན་མཆོད་སྤྲིན་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཡིས། །
tingdzin chötrin gyatso yi
Filled with clouds of offerings through samadhi
བཀང་སྟེ་རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་དབྱངས་ལ། །
kang té jetsün jamyang la
To you, Noble Mañjuśrī, I offer—
མཆོད་པས་བསོད་ནམས་ཚོགས་རྫོགས་ཤོག །
chöpé sönam tsok dzok shok
Through this, may I perfect the accumulation of merit!
ཨོཾ་བཛྲ་ཨརྒྷཾ་པཱདྱཾ་པུཥྤེ་དྷཱུཔེ་ཨཱ་ལོ་ཀེ་གནྡྷེ་ནཻ་ཝ་དྱ་ཤཔྟ་པྲ་ཏཱི་ཙྪ་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།
om arya manjushri argham padam pushpe dhupe aloke gandhe naivedye shabda pratitccha svaha
oṃ ārya mañjuśrī arghaṃ pādyaṃ puṣpe dhūpe āloke gandhe naivedye śabda pratīcchaya svāhā
སྲས་བཅས་རྒྱལ་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི། །
sé ché gyalwa tamché kyi
Embodiment of all the enlightened activity
ཕྲིན་ལས་གཅིག་བསྡུས་འགྲོ་བའི་མགོན། །
trinlé chikdü drowé gön
Of all the buddhas and their bodhisattva heirs
རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་དཔལ་དཔའ་བོ་ལ། །
jetsün jampal pawo la
Brave warrior Mañjuśrī, to you
མཆོག་ཏུ་དད་པས་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །
chok tu depé chaktsal tö
With the utmost faith and devotion, I offer homage and praise!
གཉིས་པ་གསོལ་གདབ་བྱ་བ་ནི།
2. Prayer
དེང་ནས་ཚེ་རབས་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ། །
deng né tserab tamché du
From now on, throughout all my lives,
རྗེ་བཙུན་ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་རྗེས་བཟུང་ནས། །
jetsün khyé kyi jezung né
May you always care for and protect me,
འཆད་རྩོད་རྩོམ་ལ་ཐོག་མེད་པའི། །
ché tsö tsom la tokmé pé
And grant me the wisdom of a lord of speech
སྨྲ་བའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཤེས་རབ་སྩོལ། །
mawé wangchuk sherab tsol
Unhindered in explanation, debate and composition.
གསུམ་པ་བསྡུ་རིམ་ནི།
3. Dissolution
གཟོད་ནས་རྟེན་འབྱུང་སྣང་བརྙན་དུ། །
zö né tenjung nangnyen du
From the very beginning, as a reflection of dependent origination,
ཤར་བའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྒྱུ་མའི་སྐུ། །
sharwé yeshe gyumé ku
Arisen, illusory body of wisdom,
སྤྲོས་བྲལ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་ཁྱེད་ཉིད་ནི། །
trödral jamyang khyé nyi ni
Beyond all conceptual elaboration. Mañjuśrī, you
མ་བཅོས་དེ་བཞིན་ཀློང་དུ་ཐིམ། །
machö dezhin long du tim
Dissolve into the expanse of unaltered suchness.
བཞི་པ་དགེ་བ་བསྔོ་བ་ནི།
4. Dedication of Merit
འདི་བསྒྲུབས་པ་ལས་བྱུང་བ་ཡི། །
di drubpa lé jungwa yi
May whatever sources of virtue there may be
དགེ་རྩ་ཇི་སྙེད་མཆིས་པ་ཀུན། །
getsa jinyé chipa kün
Arising through this practice
འགྲོ་རྣམས་འཇམ་དཔལ་དཔའ་བོ་ཡི། །
dro nam jampal pawo yi
All be dedicated so that beings everywhere
གོ་འཕང་མཆོག་ལ་འགོད་ཕྱིར་བསྔོ། །
gopang chok la gö chir ngo
May attain the supreme status of the warrior Mañjuśrī.
རྨད་བྱུང་ཤེས་རབ་གསུམ་གྱི་གྲུ་བོ་ཆེར། །
འགྲོ་ཀུན་ཞུགས་ཤིང་སྨོན་ལམ་གསེར་དབྱུག་གུས། །
བསྐུལ་ནས་སྲིད་པའི་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ལས་བརྒལ་ཞིང། །
གདོད་མའི་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་ཟིན་པའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་ཅིག །
Aboard the great ship of the three marvellous wisdoms,
May all beings set sail, and, propelled by the golden oars of aspiration,
May they cross over the ocean of existence
To reach the primordial kingdom.
ཅེས་འཇམ་དཔལ་སྒྲུབ་ཐབས་ཤེས་རབ་ཉིན་བྱེད་སྣང་བ་འདི་ཉིད་སྔ་སོར་ནས་འབྲི་འདུན་ཡོད་ཀྱང་ཕྱིས་སུ་བདེ་ཆེན་དྲི་མེད་ཀྱིས་བསྐུལ་ངོར་ཐུབ་བསྟན་ལུང་རིགས་སྨྲ་བའི་ཉི་མས་བྲིས་པ་འདིས། འགྲོ་ཀུན་འཇམ་དཔལ་དཔའ་བོའི་གོ་འཕང་ལ་འགོད་པའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་ཅིག །
It had been my intention for some time to compose this sādhana of Mañjuśrī entitled Light from Wisdom’s Sun, but then, in response to the requests of Dechen Drimé,1 I, Thupten Lungrik Mawé Nyima,2 composed this. May it be the cause for all beings arriving at the level of the warrior Mañjuśrī.
