A Prayer of Aspiration towards Sukhāvatī

འདི་ནས་ནུབ་ཀྱི་ཕྱོགས་རོལ་སྟེང་གི་ཆ། །

di né nub kyi chok rol teng gi cha

In a realm above and to the West,

ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་སྨོན་ལམ་ལས་གྲུབ་བདེ་ཆེན་ཞིང་། །

tuk kyé mönlam lé drup dechen zhing

Lies Sukhāvatī, forged through bodhicitta and prayer,

དེ་དབུས་བཅོམ་ལྡན་མགོན་པོ་འོད་དཔག་མེད། །

dé ü chomden gönpo öpakmé

In its centre, the blessed Lord Amitābha, 'Boundless Light',

རྒྱལ་སྲས་འཁོར་ཚོགས་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་དབུས་ན་བཞུགས། །

gyalsé khor tsok gyatsö ü na zhuk

Presides amidst a retinue of countless bodhisattvas.

ལུས་ངག་ཡིད་རབ་གུས་པས་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ཞིང་། །

lü ngak yi rap güpé chak tsal zhing

Devotedly, with body, speech and mind, I pay homage,

དངོས་འབྱོར་ཡིད་སྤྲུལ་མཆོད་འབུལ་སྡིག་ལྟུང་བཤགས། །

ngö jor yi trul chö bul dik tung shak

I offer real and imagined gifts and confess my harmful acts and downfalls,

དགེ་ལ་ཡིད་རང་ཆོས་འཁོར་སྐོར་བར་བསྐུལ། །

gé la yi rang chö khor korwar kul

I rejoice in virtue, and request you to turn the wheel of Dharma,

ཡུན་རིང་བཞུགས་གསོལ་དགེ་རྩ་བྱང་ཆུབ་བསྔོ། །

yun ring zhuk sol gé tsa chang chub ngo

I beseech you to remain, and dedicate all virtue towards enlightenment:

ནམ་མཁས་ཁྱབ་པའི་ཕ་མ་སེམས་ཅན་ཀུན། །

namkhé khyabpé pama semchen kun

May all sentient beings, my very own parents, as infinite as space,

རྣམ་མཁྱེན་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐོབ་པར་བྱ། །

namkhyen dzokpé sangyé tobpar ja

Attain the omniscient state of perfect Buddhahood!

དེ་ཕྱིར་བདག་གི་དུས་འདི་ནས་བཟུང་སྟེ། །

dé chir dak gi dü di né zung té

To this end, from this moment on,

བྱང་ཆུབ་བར་དུ་རྒྱལ་སྲས་སྤྱོད་ལ་བསླབ། །

chang chub bar du gyalsé chö la lap

I shall train in the actions of a bodhisattva.

འདིས་མཚོན་དུས་གསུམ་བསགས་པའི་དགེ་ཚོགས་ཀུན། །

di tsön dü sum sakpé gé tsok kun

With this representing the virtues of past, present and future,

འགྲོ་རྣམས་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐོབ་ཕྱིར་བསྔོ། །

dro nam dzokpé sangyé top chir ngo

I dedicate it so that all beings may attain perfect enlightenment,

དེ་མ་ཐོབ་པའི་ཚེ་རབས་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ། །

de ma tobpé tsé rap tamché du

And, in all their lives until then,

བདེ་ཆེན་ཞིང་སྐྱེས་རྒྱལ་བའི་ཞལ་མཐོང་ཤོག །

dechen zhing kyé gyalwé zhal tong shok

Be born in Sukhāvatī, there to behold the Victorious One!

ཅེས་འོད་མདོ་ལས་རྒྱུ་བཞི་གསུངས་པ་ཉུང་གསལ་ཁྱེར་བདེ་དགོས་ཚུལ་རང་སློབ་འགྱུར་མེད་ཀུན་བཟང་བསྟན་འཛིན་ནས་བསྐུལ་ངོར་སི་ཏུ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱ་མཚོས་བྲིས་པ་འདི་མཐོང་ཐོས་འབྲེལ་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཅན་དེའི་མཐུ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ཞིང་དེར་སྐྱེ་བའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་ཅིག། དགེའོ།། །།

Thus, Situ Chöyi Gyatso wrote this is in response to a request from his own student Gyurme Kunzang Tendzin, who expressed the need for a brief, clear and simple way of applying the four causes taught in the Amitābha Sūtra. Through the power of that compassionate buddha, for everyone who sees, hears or makes a connection with this, may it become a cause of taking birth in that realm. Let there be virtue!
