The Melody that Brings Universal Auspiciousness and Fulfilment

ཚེ་རབས་ལས་ཀྱི་ཕྲེང་བར་སྤྱི་གཙུག་གི་རྒྱན་དུ། །

tsé rab lé kyi trengwar chi tsuk gi gyen du

Throughout the karmic chain of my lives, you adorn my crown,

འབྲལ་མེད་ལས་སྨོན་དཀར་པོས་མེ་ཏོག་གིས་བཅིང་བའི། །

dralmé lé mön karpö metok gi chingwé

Tied inseparably with the flowers of pure action and aspiration,

མཚུངས་མེད་དྲིན་ཆེན་བླ་མ་ཡིད་བཞིན་གྱི་ནོར་བུ། །

tsungmé drinchen lama yizhin gyi norbu

Incomparable and most gracious guru, Wish-Fulfilling Jewel,

མཚན་གྱིས་བརྗོད་དཀའ་ཐུབ་བསྟན་ཆོས་འཕེལ་དེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

tsen gyi jö ka tubten chöpel dé khyen no

Your name so difficult to utter: Thupten Chöpel,¹ care for me!

 

སྙིང་དབུས་མི་ཤིགས་འཁོར་ལོའི་གུར་ཁང་གི་དབུས་སུ། །

nying ü mi shik khorlö gur khang gi ü su

Remain at the centre of the palace of the indestructible chakra in my heart,

འབྲལ་མེད་དད་གསུམ་བདུད་རྩིས་མཆོད་སྤྲིན་གྱིས་བསྙེན་པའི། །

dralmé dé sum düdtsi chötrin gyi nyenpé

As I present nectar-like offering-clouds of the three kinds of faith,

རིགས་བརྒྱའི་ཁྱབ་བདག་མི་ཕམ་བློ་གྲོས་ནི་དྲི་མེད། །

rik gyé khyabdak mipam lodrö ni drimé

Lord of a hundred buddha families, Mipham Lodrö Drimé—Stainless Intellect,

གཟུངས་སྤོབས་ཡོན་ཏན་བྱེ་བའི་གཏེར་མཛོད་ཁྱེད་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

zung pob yönten chewé terdzö khyé khyen no

Treasury of myriad qualities of retention and confidence, care for me!

 

དེ་རང་དགའ་འོ་སྐྱིད་དོ་བླ་མའི་ཐུགས་རྗེས། །

dé rang ga’o kyi do lamé tukjé

Today, through the guru’s compassion, I am joyful and happy,

བསམ་དོན་དམ་ཆོས་འདུན་མ་ཡིད་བཞིན་དུ་འགྲུབ་ནས། །

samdön damchö dünma yizhin du drup né

My aspiration to practise the noble Dharma has been fulfilled,

རྒས་པའི་ལུས་འདི་གར་ལ་འཁྱོལ་ཐབས་ཤིགས་མེད་ཀྱང་། །

gepé lü di gar la khyöl tab shik mé kyang

And even though this aged body lacks the strength to dance,

སྐྱིད་པའི་གླུ་ཆུང་མལ་ནས་ཐོལ་བྱུང་དུ་འགུགས་འདོད། །

kyipé lu chung mel né töl jung du guk dö

I feel moved to sing this spontaneous happy song from my bed!

 

རིགས་དྲུག་འཁོར་བའི་གནས་ན་སྐྱིད་སྡུག་གི་ལས་སྣང་། །

rik druk khorwé né na kyi duk gi lé nang

Karmic experiences of joy and sorrow in saṃsāra’s six realms

དཀར་ནག་སོས་ཀའི་སྤྲིན་བཞིན་རྟག་བརྟན་ཞིག་མེད་ཀྱང་། །

kar nak söké trin zhin tak ten zhik mé kyang

Have no more permanence or stability than clouds in spring,

ང་ཅག་དམ་ཆོས་སྤྱོད་པའི་སྐལ་བཟང་གི་སྐྱེ་བོ། །

nga chak damchö chöpé kalzang gi kyewo

But those of us with the fortune to practise the noble Dharma

བདེ་ནས་བདེ་བར་འགྲོ་ཕྱིར་སྐྱིད་པོ་རུ་འདུག་གོ །

dé né dewar dro chir kyipo ru duk go

Proceed from one joy to the next and thus remain content!

 

ལས་སྨོན་ཁུ་བྱུག་བུ་མོས་གླུ་དབྱངས་ཀྱིས་བསྐུལ་ནས། །

lé mön khu chuk bumö lu yang kyi kül né

Inspired by the cuckoo call of past karma and aspirations,

ཆུང་ནས་ཐུབ་བསྟན་ནགས་མའི་སྐྱེས་ཚལ་ལ་ཕེབས་ཏེ། །

chung né tubten nakmé kyé tsal la peb té

I entered the garden of Buddhist teachings at an early age,

ཐེག་མཆོག་བདུད་རྩིའི་ཟེགས་མའི་བཅུད་ལེན་ལ་རོལ་བས། །

tek chok düdtsi zekmé chülen la rolwé

And through savouring the nectar drops of the supreme vehicle,

ཐོགས་མའི་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་དམ་པའི་ཆོས་ཕྱོགས་ལ་འགྲིགས་སོང་། །

tokmé tendrel dampé chö chok la drik song

Created the right initial conditions to follow the sacred Dharma.

 

སྔོན་བྱོན་དམ་པའི་རྣམ་ཐར་ཡིད་ཡུལ་ལ་བཅིང་སྟེ། །

ngön chön dampé namtar yi tül la ching té

I kept in mind the lives of the great masters of the past,

མཚུངས་མེད་བླ་མ་དམ་པའི་ཞལ་གསུང་ལ་ཉན་ནས། །

tsungmé drinchen lama yizhin gyi norbu

And received instructions from the incomparable noble guru,

སྟོན་འཁོར་ཉམས་དགའ་འཛོམས་པ་ད་ལྟ་ཡང་དྲན་ན། །

tön khor nyamga dzompa data yang dren na

Even now when I think of the joyous gatherings of teacher and disciples,

ལུས་སེམས་སྡོད་མི་ཚུགས་པའི་དགའ་སྤྲོ་ཞིག་འདུག་པ། །

lü sem dö mi tsukpé ga tro zhik dukpa

I feel so elated that my mind is stirred and my body cannot hold still.

 

སྐྱབས་གནས་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་སྤྱི་གཟུགས་བླ་མ་ནི་རྗེ་ཡི། །

kyabné gyatsö chi zuk lama ni jé yi

The lord guru is the embodiment of infinite sources of refuge,

ཐུགས་རྗེ་ན་བཟའ་དཀར་པོའི་གྲྭ་མཐའ་ལ་འཇུས་ནས། །

tukjé nabza karpö dru ta la jü né

And holding on to a corner of the white cloth of his compassion,

ནམ་ཡང་འབྲལ་བ་མེད་པའི་སྨོན་ལམ་ཞིག་བཏབ་ཡོད། །

nam yang dralwa mepé mönlam zhik tab yö

I made the aspiration that we might never be apart.

ད་ནི་ཇི་ལྟར་བྱས་ཀྱང་སྐྱིད་པོ་རུ་འདུག་གོ །

da ni ji tar ché kyang kyipo ru duk go

Now, no matter what happens, I shall always be happy.

 

ཕ་མེས་རིག་འཛིན་བརྒྱུད་པའི་ཐུགས་དམ་ཀྱི་སྐྱེལ་སོ། །

pamé rigdzin gyüpé tukdam kyi kyelso

The ultimate practice passed down by the vidyādharas of the lineage

འཇའ་ལུས་ཆོས་སྐུ་གྲུབ་པའི་ཐེག་རྩེ་ཡི་ཆོས་ཚུལ། །

jalü chöku drubpé tek tsé yi chö tsul

Is the Dharma of the highest vehicle, the means to attain the rainbow body dharmakāya—

འདི་དང་འཕྲད་ཚད་སྲིད་པ་ཐ་མ་རུ་ངེས་པས། །

di dang tré tsé sipa tama ru ngépé

All who encounter it truly discover the rarest of the rare,

བློ་ཕུགས་ཁོང་ལ་བཅོལ་བའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་ང་སྐྱིད་པ། །

lo puk khong la chölwé naljor nga kyipa

And I, a yogi who keeps it forever in mind, am happy indeed!

 

རིགས་ཀུན་ཁྱབ་བདག་མི་ཕམ་བློ་གྲོས་ནི་དྲི་མེད། །

rik kun khyabdak mipam lodrö di dri mé

Lord of all buddha families, Mipham Lodrö Drimé,

མོས་གུས་དད་པའི་ཡིད་མཁར་འབྲལ་མེད་དུ་བསྙེན་པས། །

mögü depé yi khar dral mé du nyenpé

Through relying on you inseparably in the space of my devotion,

རིག་སྟོང་གཉུག་མ་རྡོ་རྗེའི་རང་ཚུགས་ཤིག་ཟིན་ཏེ། །

rik tong nyukma dorjé rang tsuk shik zin té

I have realized the indestructible genuine nature of awareness and emptiness,

ཡིད་དཔྱོད་བཅོས་མའི་ལྟ་སྒོམ་ཡིད་ཡུལ་ནས་བོར་སོང་། །

yichö chömé ta gom yi yül né bor song

And let go of mental speculation and contrived views and meditation.

 

སྡུག་འབད་ཨུ་ཚུགས་བརྩོན་པའི་དཔེ་ཀློག་ལ་མ་ལྟོས། །

duk bé u tsuk tsönpé pé lok la ma tö

Without depending upon strenuous effort and book learning,

གཟུང་འཛིན་སེམས་ཀྱི་འདུད་རྒྱ་སྙིང་དབུས་ནས་གྲོལ་བས། །

zung dzin sem kyi dü gya nying ü né drolwé

The knots of dualistic mind have been released from deep within my heart,

མདོ་སྔགས་གཞུང་བརྒྱའི་གནད་གསང་རྩོལ་མེད་དུ་ཤར་བའི། །

do ngak zhung gyé né sang tsolmé du sharwé

And the secrets of a hundred sūtra and mantra works effortlessly appear—

ཐེག་རྩེའི་གསང་ལམ་སྙོགས་པའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་ང་སྐྱིད་པ། །

tek tsé sang lam nyokpé naljor nga kyipa

As a yogi on the secret path of the pinnacle of vehicles, I am happy indeed!

 

དམིགས་མེད་བྱམས་དང་སྙིང་རྗེས་ལྷག་བསམ་གྱིས་བསྐུལ་ནས། །

mikmé jam dang nyingjé lhaksam gyi kül né

Motivated by the purest intention of non-referential love and compassion,

འབྲེལ་ཚད་འགྲོ་ཀུན་དག་པའི་ཞིང་བཟང་དུ་ཁྲིད་ཕྱིར། །

drel tsé dro kün dakpé zhing zang du tri chir

To lead all with whom I am connected to the most perfect of pure lands,

ཞུམ་མེད་སྙིང་སྟོབས་བརྩོན་པའི་གོ་ཆ་ཞིག་བགོས་ནས། །

zhum mé nying tob tsönpé go cha zhik gö né

I shall wear the armour of unflagging diligence and strength of heart—

གཞན་དོན་ཡིད་བཞིན་འགྲུབ་པའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་ང་སྐྱིད་པ། །

zhen dön yizhin drubpé naljor nga kyipa

As a yogi who accomplishes the welfare of others, I am happy indeed!

 

ཕན་བདེའི་འབྱུང་གནས་ཐུབ་བསྟན་རིན་ཆེན་གྱི་ཏོག་བཟང་། །

pendé jungné tubten rinchen gyi tok zang

The crowning jewel of buddha’s teachings, source of all benefit and happiness,

ཆེར་སྙིགས་ཐུན་གསུམ་འཁོར་ལོའི་སྨག་རུམ་དུ་གནས་པ། །

cher nyik tün sum khorlö makrum du nepé

Remains hidden during the dark night of a degenerate age,

བཤད་སྒྲུབ་རྒྱལ་མཚན་དཀར་པོའི་རྩེ་མོ་རུ་བཏེགས་ནས། །

shé drup gyaltsen karpö tsemo ru tek né

But having raised it aloft on the white victory banner of study and practice,

བསྟན་པའི་ཞབས་ཏོག་འགྲུབ་པའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་ང་སྐྱིད་པ། །

tenpé zhap tok drubpé naljor nga kyipa

I, a yogi who renders service to the teachings, am happy indeed!

 

འབྱུང་འདུས་སྒྱུ་མའི་ཕུང་པོ་ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་འཁྲུལ་འཁོར། །

jungdü gyumé pungpo zakché kyi trulkhor

This tainted contraption, an illusory assemblage of the elements,

བར་མེད་ན་དང་རྒ་བའི་དུཿཁ་ཡིས་ཟིན་ཀྱང་། །

barmé na dang gawé dukha yi zin kyang

Is tormented by the incessant duḥkha of sickness and ageing,

དལ་འབྱོར་མི་ཚེ་དོན་ལྡན་དམ་ཆོས་ཀྱིས་འཁྱོལ་བས། །

daljor mi tsé dön den damchö kyi khyölwé

But with a free and fortunate human life devoted meaningfully to the Dharma,

སེམས་ལ་གུ་ཡང་སྐྱིད་ཀྱི་ཉི་མ་ཞིག་ཤར་འདུག །

sem la gu yang kyi kyi nyima zhik shar duk

The sun of happiness dawns freely and expansively in my mind!

 

ད་ནི་རྩ་གསུམ་ལྷ་དང་བླ་མ་ཡི་དགྱེས་བརྩེས། །

da ni tsa sum lha dang lama yi gyé tsé

Now, that the Three Root deities and guru have lovingly accepted me,

དབུགས་དབྱུང་གསང་གཏམ་རོལ་མོ་རྣ་བ་རུ་སོན་ནས། །

uk yung sang tam rolmo nawa ru sön né

And the music of secret instruction has passed into my ears,

བདེ་ནས་བདེ་བར་འགྲོ་བའི་གདེངས་ཆེན་ཞིག་རྙེད་དེ། །

dé né dewar drowé ding chen zhik nyé dé

I have gained the vast confidence of proceeding from joy to joy,

གཅིག་པུར་གནས་ཀྱང་སྐྱིད་པའི་ཉམས་གླུ་ཞིག་འགུགས་འདོད། །

chikpur né kyang kyipé nyamlu zhik guk dö

And even in solitude, I feel inspired to sing a song of happiness!

 

གསོན་ཀྱང་དགའ་སྟེ་བསྟན་འགྲོའི་དོན་ཆེན་ཞིག་འགྲུབ་འདུག །

sön kyang ga té tendrö dön chen zhik drup duk

In life, I am joyful because I serve the teachings and beings.

ཤི་ཡང་དགའ་སྟེ་དག་པའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་འགྲོ་ངེས། །

shi yang ga té dakpé zhing kham dro ngé

In death, I shall be joyful too, as I shall surely go to a pure land;

སྐྱིད་སྡུག་ལས་ཀྱི་སྣང་བ་ཇི་འདྲ་ཞིག་བྱུང་ཡང་། །

kyi duk lé kyi nangwa ji dra zhik jung yang

So whatever karmic experiences arise, whether positive or negative,

ཡིད་ལ་རེ་དང་དོགས་པའི་སེམས་ཁྲལ་དེ་བོར་སོང་། །

yi la ré dang dokpé sem tral dé bor song

I have let go of mental agitation based on hopes and fears!

 

ནམ་ཞིག་ཟག་བཅས་ཕུང་པོའི་སྦུབས་རྒྱ་ལས་གྲོལ་ཚེ། །

nam zhik zakché pungpö bub gya lé drol tsé

When the time comes to escape the confines of these tainted aggregates,

དབང་མེད་ལས་ཀྱིས་བསྐྱེད་པའི་སྒྱུ་ལུས་འདིས་སུན་ནས། །

wangmé lé kyi kyepé gyu lü di sün né

I shall reject this uncontrollable, illusory body born of karma,

བདེ་ལྡན་དག་པའི་ཞིང་གི་མེ་ཏོག་གི་སྙིང་པོར། །

dé den dakpé zhing gi mé tok gi nyingpor

And seek instead a supreme form adorned with signs and marks

ཡིད་འོང་མཚན་དཔེས་མཛེས་པའི་ལུས་མཆོག་ཞིག་ལེན་འདོད། །

yi ong tsenpé dzepé lü chok zhik len dö

In the heart of a lotus flower within the pure realm of Sukhāvatī.

 

སངས་རྒྱས་དངོས་ལས་ཐེག་མཆོག་གདམས་པ་ཞིག་མནོས་ནས། །

sangyé ngö lé tek chok dampa zhik nö né

Having received instruction on the supreme vehicle from an actual buddha,

རྟོགས་པའི་ལུས་སྟོབས་རྫོགས་ཏེ་སྤྲུལ་བ་ཡི་རོལ་གར། །

tokpé lü tob dzok té trulwa yi rol gar

My body of realization will perfect its strength, and its emanation display

རིག་འཛིན་སེམས་དཔའ་སེམས་མའི་མཛའ་གྲོགས་དང་བལྡེབས་ནས། །

rigdzin sempa semmé dza drok dang deb né

Will enjoy the company of vidyādharas and bodhisattvas male and female,

དག་དང་མ་དག་ཞིང་དུ་ལྟད་མོ་རུ་ཕེབས་འགྲོ། །

dak dang ma dak zhing du temo ru peb dro

While travelling to behold various spectacles in pure and impure realms.

 

མདོར་ན་ད་ནས་བརྩོན་པའི་གོ་ཆ་ཞིག་བགོས་ཏེ། །

dor na da né tsönpé go cha zhi gö té

In short, I rejoice that by putting on the armour of diligence

ཀུན་བཟང་སྤྱོད་པ་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་རྣམ་ཐར་ལ་བསླབས་ནས། །

kunzang chöpa gyatsö namtar la lab né

And training in the vast, ocean-like activity of Samantabhadra,

མ་རྒན་འགྲོ་ཀུན་སྲིད་པའི་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ལས་སྒྲོལ་ཕྱིར། །

ma gen dro kun sipé gyatso lé drol chir

I shall strive for as long as space exists to liberate all beings,

ནམ་མཁའ་སྲིད་དུ་བརྩོན་ལ་སྤྲོ་བ་ཞིག་སྐྱེས་བྱུང་། །

namkha si du tsön la trowa zhik kyé chung

My very own past mothers, from the ocean of existence!

 

དེ་ལྟར་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་འཁོར་ལོའི་རོལ་མོ་ཡི་དབྱངས་སྙན། །

dé tar longchö khorlö rolmo yi yang nyen

When this sweet sound of the music of the constant wheel of enjoyment,

བཀྲ་ཤིས་དོན་ཀུན་གྲུབ་པའི་དགའ་སྐྱིད་ཀྱི་དོ་ཧ། །

trashi dön kün drubpé gakyi kyi doha

This doha of happiness that brings universal auspiciousness and fulfilment,

འདི་ཉིད་རྣ་བར་སོན་པའི་མཆོག་དམན་གྱི་འགྲོ་ཀུན། །

di nyi nawar sönpé chok men gyi dro kün

Is heard by any being, regardless of whether they are high or low in status,

རྟག་ཏུ་མྱ་ངན་མེད་པའི་དཔལ་ཡོན་ལ་སྨོན་ནོ། །

taktu nya ngen mepé palyön la mön no

May they gain the excellent fortune of everlasting freedom from sorrow!

 

ཞེས་པ་འདི་ནི་བོད་རབ་བྱུང་ ༡༧ པའི་ས་ཡོས་ས་ག་ཟླ་བའི་ཚེས་ ༢ ཀྱི་སྔ་དྲོའི་ཆར་ངག་དབང་བློ་གྲོས་མཚུངས་མེད་པས་གང་ཤར་བཅོས་བསྒྱུར་མ་བྱས་པར་སྨྲས་པ་དགེའོ།། །།

Thus, on the morning of the second day of the vaiśākha month in the Earth Hare year of the seventeenth calendrical cycle (1999), Ngawang Lodrö Tsungmé spoke these words as they arose spontaneously and set them down without amendment. May virtue abound!
