A Prayer for the Long Life of His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Supreme Victor and Omniscient One

Om svasti!

རྒྱལ་བ་ཀུན་གྱི་བརྩེ་ཆེན་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྐུ། །

gyalwa kün gyi tsé chen yeshé ku

The vast love and primordial wisdom of the buddhas

གཅིག་ཏུ་བསྡུས་པ་གངས་རི་ལྟར་དཀར་བ། །

chik tu düpa gangri tar karwa

All are embodied in Lokeshvara, white like a dazzling snow mountain,

འཕགས་མཆོག་འཇིག་རྟེན་དབང་ཕྱུག་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ། །

pak chok jikten wangchuk trulpé ku

Sublime and holy Lord of the World. You who are his emanation,

ཁམས་གསུམ་འགྲོ་བའི་བླ་མ་རྒྱལ་གྱུར་ཅིག །

kham sum drowé lama gyal gyur chik

A guru for each and every being in the three realms: may you be victorious!

སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་ན་ངོ་མཚར་ཟླ་མེད་པ། །

sipa sum na ngotsar da mépa

Wondrous and without equal in the three worlds,

ཨུ་དུམ་ཝ་ར་ལྟར་འཕགས་ཐམས་ཅད་མཁྱེན། །

udumwara tar pak tamché khyen

Omniscient and as unique as the udumbara flower,

འཛམ་གླིང་བསྟན་འགྲོ་ཡོངས་ཀྱི་གཙུག་ནོར་ཆེ། །

dzam ling ten dro yong kyi tsuk nor ché

Great crown jewel for the teachings and all beings on earth:

རྒྱལ་མཆོག་ཕྱག་ན་པདྨོ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

gyal chok chak na pemo shyap ten söl

Supreme victorious one, Holder of the Lotus—I pray for your long life!

གདོད་ནས་མངོན་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱང་རྩོད་པའི་དུས། །

dö né ngön sangyé kyang tsöpé dü

Always and forever enlightened, yet in this age of conflict

འགྲོ་རྣམས་ཕྱག་གི་ཡལ་གས་ཉེར་འཛིན་པའི། །

dro nam chak gi yalgé nyer dzinpé

You gather living beings within your embrace,

ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་དམ་བཅའ་རྡོ་རྗེ་ལྟ་བུར་བརྟན། །

tuk kyé damcha dorjé tabur ten

Your resolve and your commitment unshakeable like a vajra:

ས་བཅུའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཆེན་པོ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

sa chüi wangchuk chenpo shyap ten söl

Great lord on the tenth bhumi—I pray for your long life!

བྱང་ཆུབ་ལམ་གྱི་རིམ་པའི་མངོན་རྟོགས་ཀུན། །

chang chub lam gyi rimpé ngön tok kün

All the realizations of the stages of the path to enlightenment

གསང་བ་གསུམ་དང་དབྱེར་མེད་འདྲེས་པ་ལས། །

sangwa sum dang yermé drépa lé

Are merged as one with your secret body, speech and mind,

མཁྱེན་དང་བརྩེ་བའི་ཡོན་ཏན་བསམ་མི་ཁྱབ། །

khyen dang tséwé yönten sam mi khyap

Your qualities of knowledge and love inconceivable:

བྱང་ཕྱོགས་ཐུབ་དབང་གཉིས་པར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

chang chok tubwang nyipar shyap ten söl

Second buddha of the north—I pray for your long life!

འཆད་རྩོད་རྩོམ་ལ་ཆགས་ཐོགས་མི་མངའ་ཞིང༌། །

ché tsö tsom la chak tok mi nga shying

Of teaching, debate and composition, your mastery is unimpaired,

སྤོབས་པའི་གཏེར་ཆེན་བརྒྱད་པོ་ཡོངས་སུ་གྲོལ། །

pobpé ter chen gyépo yong su drol

In you the eight great treasures of brilliance have opened wide,

སོ་སོ་ཡང་དག་རིག་པས་ཆོས་སྟོན་པ། །

soso yangdak rikpé chö tönpa

With ‘specific perfect understanding’, you teach the Dharma:

ཕྱོགས་ལས་རྣམ་རྒྱལ་ཆེན་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

chok lé namgyal chenpor shyap ten söl

You who are victorious in every direction—I pray for your long life!

བློ་བཟང་རྒྱལ་བའི་བསྟན་པ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ། །

lobzang gyalwé tenpa rinpoché

Through your explanation, accomplishment and activity, you spread

བཤད་སྒྲུབ་ལས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོས་ཕྱོགས་བརྒྱར་སྤེལ། །

shédrup lé kyi khorlö chok gyar pel

The enlightened Tsongkhapa’s precious teaching in a hundred directions,

རྒོལ་ངན་བདུད་ཀྱི་གླང་པོའི་ཀླད་པ་འགེམས། །

göl ngen dü kyi langpöi lépa gem

Annihilating the deluded arguments of malicious opponents,

འཇིགས་བྲལ་སྨྲ་བའི་སེངྒེ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

jikmé mawé sengér shyap ten söl

Fearless Lion of Speech, Mañjushri—I pray for your long life!

སྣང་གསུམ་རྒྱུད་གསུམ་གསང་སྔགས་ལམ་གྱི་རིམ། །

nang sum gyü sum sang ngak lam gyi rim

On the secret mantra’s gradual path of the triple vision and triple tantra,

དབང་བཞིའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་ཟབ་མོ་འགྲོས་བཞི་ཐིམ། །

wang shyi naljor zabmö drö shyi tim

As the four mandalas are absorbed through the profound yogas of the four empowerments,

སྐུ་བཞིའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་མངོན་སུམ་བརྙེས་མཛད་པ། །

ku shyi yeshé ngönsum nyé dzépa

You realize directly the wisdom of the four kayas:

ཁྱབ་བདག་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་དབང་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

khyab dak dorjé chang wang shyap ten söl

All-pervading lord vajradhara—I pray for your long life!

དངོས་པོ་ཀུན་གྱི་གནས་ལུགས་ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེ། །

ngöpo kün gyi néluk chakgya ché

Mahamudra is the natural state of all things,

ཟབ་གསལ་གཉིས་སུ་མེད་པའི་ལྷན་སྐྱེས་ཀྱི། །

zap sal nyi su mépé lhen kyé kyi

Profound emptiness and clarity, indivisible:

ཡེ་ཤེས་ཉི་མས་སྲིད་ཞིའི་མུན་སེལ་བ། །

yeshé nyimé si shyi mün selwa

With the sunlight of its innate wisdom you dispel the darkness of samsara and nirvana:

རྣལ་འབྱོར་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཆེན་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

naljor wangchuk chenpor shyap ten söl

Great lord of yogins, Milarepa—I pray for your long life!

རྒྱུད་སྡེ་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་གསང་བ་ཀུན་གྱི་མཛོད། །

gyü dé gyamtsöi sangwa kün gyi dzö

From the treasury of all the mysteries in the ocean of tantras

སྨིན་གྲོལ་ཁ་འབབ་རྣམ་བཞིའི་རྒྱུན་བཟང་པོ། །

mindrol khabab nam shyi gyün zangpo

You make the exquisite water of the four rivers that mature and liberate

སྐལ་བཟང་གདུལ་བྱའི་ཞིང་སར་འདྲེན་མཛད་པ། །

kalzang dülché shying sar dren dzépa

Flow into the fields of fortunate disciples:

གསང་བ་འཛིན་པའི་བདག་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

sangwa dzinpé dakpor shyap ten söl

Vajrapani, Lord of Secrets—I pray for your long life!

འཁོར་འདས་ཆོས་ཀུན་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་རོལ་པར་ཤར། །

khordé chö kün tendrel rolpar shar

Everything in samsara and nirvana occurs as the play of interdependence,

ཤར་ཡང་གདོད་ནས་སྐྱེ་མེད་རབ་ཞི་བ། །

shar yang dö né kyé mé rap shyiwa

Arising yet primordially unborn, a state of utter peace:

སྤྲོས་པ་ཀུན་བྲལ་ཟབ་མོ་དབུ་མའི་ལམ། །

tröpa kün dral zabmo umé lam

Wise teacher of this profound Madhyamaka that is free from all conceptual elaboration,

སྟོན་མཁས་ཀླུ་ཡི་དབང་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

tön khé lu yi wangpor shyap ten söl

‘Lord of Nagas’—Nagarjuna—I pray for your long life!

ཕྱི་ནང་གཞན་གསུམ་དབྱེར་མེད་དུས་འཁོར་ལོ། །

chi nang shyen sum yermé dü khorlo

Kulika Pundarika, skilled and perfect exponent of the Kalachakra,

ལེགས་པར་འདོམས་མཁས་རིགས་ལྡན་པདྨ་དཀར། །

lekpar dom khé rikden pema kar

With its inseparable outer, inner and alternative cycles,

བྷོ་ཊའི་ལྗོངས་སུ་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་སུ་སྟོན། །

bhoté jong su gewé shé su tön

Has appeared in the land of Tibet in the form of a spiritual friend:

དང་པོའི་སངས་རྒྱས་ངོ་བོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

dangpöi sangyé ngowor shyap ten söl

You who are in essence the original buddha, Kalachakra—I pray for your long life!

འཁོར་འདས་ཆོས་ཀུན་འོད་གསལ་ཐིག་ལེའི་ཀློང༌། །

khordé chö kün ösel tikléi long

All phenomena of samsara and nirvana are the expanse of the sphere of luminosity—

བྲི་གང་མེད་པ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་རྫོགས་པ་ཆེ། །

dri gang mépa lhün gyi dzokpa ché

Unfluctuating, spontaneously Great Perfection:

བྱར་མེད་རང་གྲོལ་འབྲས་བུའི་རྒྱལ་ས་སྙོགས། །

charmé rangdrol drebüi gyal sa nyok

In self-liberation, beyond all action, you attain the kingdom of fruition,

ཀུན་བཟང་གདོད་མའི་མགོན་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

künzang dömé gönpor shyap ten söl

Primordial lord Samantabhadra—I pray for your long life!

མདོར་ན་ཐུབ་བསྟན་ཡོངས་རྫོགས་ཤིང་རྟ་ཆེ། །

dor na tupten yong dzok shingta ché

Fearless, and without mixing or confusing them,

མ་འདྲེས་ཕྱག་གིས་འདྲེན་ལ་བསྙེངས་པ་བྲལ། །

ma dré chak gi dren la nyengpa dral

You steer onwards the great chariot of all the Buddha’s teachings;

བསྟན་དང་འགྲོ་བ་ཀུན་གྱི་སྐྱབས་གཅིག་པུ། །

ten dang drowa kün gyi kyap chikpu

Sole refuge for the teachings and for all beings:

བསྟན་འཛིན་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་དབང་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

tendzin gyamtsöi wangpor shyap ten söl

Lord Tenzin Gyatso—I pray for your long life!

སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་གྱི་ཆེ་རྒུའི་གཙུག་ནོར་གྱིས། །

sipa sum gyi ché güi tsuk nor gyi

A hundred times with reverence and awe,

གང་གི་ཞབས་པད་བཀྲ་ཤིས་འཁོར་ལོ་ལ། །

gang gi shyap pé trashi khorlo la

The jewelled heads of the mighty ones of the three worlds,

གུས་ཤིང་འདར་བཅས་ལན་བརྒྱར་བཏུད་པ་ཡིས། །

gü shing dar ché len gyar tüpa yi

Bow to the auspicious wheels of your lotus feet:

ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཆེན་པོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

chö kyi gyalpo chenpor shyap ten söl

Great sovereign of Dharma—I pray for your long life!

ལྷ་མིན་བདུད་སྡེ་ཚར་གཅོད་ལྷ་ཡི་དབང༌། །

lha min dü der tsar chö lha yi wang

As the lord of the gods, annihilating the demonic forces of the asuras

མཐུ་སྟོབས་ནུས་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་རྩེ་བརྒྱ་པས། །

tu top nüpé dorjé tsé gyawé

With the hundred-pointed vajra of power, energy and strength,

ལྟ་ངན་ལོག་ལྟའི་བྲག་རི་འཇོམས་མཛད་པ། །

ta ngen lok té drak ri jom dzépa

Destroying the rocky mountains of wrong and perverted views,

འཇིགས་མཛད་ཧེ་རུ་ཀ་དཔལ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

jik dzé heruka pal shyap ten söl

Fearsome Shri Heruka—I pray for your long life!

ས་དང་ལྷུན་པོ་ཉི་ཟླ་གནས་ཀྱི་བར། །

sa dang lhünpo nyi da né kyi bar

As long as this earth, Mount Meru, sun and moon endure,

གསང་གསུམ་གཞན་དུ་འགྱུར་བ་མེད་པ་ཡི། །

sang sum shyen du gyurwa mépa yi

May you remain secure, invincible, on your vajra throne

གྲུ་འཛིན་འཕགས་མཆོག་དགྱེས་པའི་གཞལ་མེད་ཁང༌། །

dru dzin pak chok gyépé shyal mé khang

In the celestial mansion of Potala, Avalokiteshvara’s delight,

རྡོ་རྗེའི་ཁྲི་ལ་གཞོམ་བྲལ་བརྟན་བཞུགས་གསོལ། །

dorjéi tri la shyom dral ten shyuk söl

Your secret body, speech and mind forever changeless!

འཆི་མེད་ལྷ་མཆོག་གསུམ་གྱི་བྱིན་རླབས་དང༌། །

chimé lha chok sum gyi chinlap dang

Through the grace of the three supreme deities of Long Life,

བླ་མ་ཡི་དམ་སངས་རྒྱས་བྱང་སེམས་ཀྱི། །

lama yidam sangyé chang sem kyi

And the power of the truth of masters, yidams, buddhas and bodhisattvas,

བདེན་པའི་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས་ཇི་ལྟར་གསོལ་བའི་དོན། །

denpé top kyi ji tar sölwé dön

May all that we have prayed for be blessed

གེགས་མེད་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

gekmé drubpar chin gyi lap tu söl

And so accomplished without any obstacle!༻

ཞེས་སྒོ་གསུམ་དངོས་པོ་ཀུན་གྱིས་བཏུད་དེ་ཤར་མདོ་ཁམས་ཀྱི་ལྗོངས་སུ་གནས་པ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་སྤྲུལ་མིང་འཛིན་པ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་གུས་པ་ཆེན་པོས་དབུས་འགྱུར་འཆང་ལྷ་ལྡན་ར་ས་འཕྲུལ་སྣང་གི་ཆོས་འཁོར་ཆེན་པོའི་ལྷོ་ཕྱོགས་བསམ་འགྲུབ་ཕོ་བྲང་གི་གཟིམ་ཤག་ཏུ་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་བཞིན་བྲིས་ཏེ་ཐམས་ཅད་མཁྱེན་གཟིགས་ཆེན་པོའི་སྤྱན་སྔར་ཕུལ་བ་༧ཞབས་པད་བསྐལ་པ་རྒྱ་མཚོར་བཞུགས་པའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་ཅིག། །།སརྦ་དཱ་ཀ་ལྱཾ་སུ་ཤྲེ་ཡོ་བྷ་བ་ཏུ། །

Paying reverence with his body, his speech and his mind, the one who bears the name of the incarnation of Jamyang Khyentse, Jamyang Chökyi Lodrö from the realm of Dokham in the east, wrote this as he prayed with fervent devotion, at the Samdrup family house, to the south of the great temple of Rasa Trulnang (the Jokhang), in Lhasa in Central Tibet. He then offered this prayer to the great omniscient one himself. May it become a cause for his life to be secure for countless aeons! Sarwada kalyanam sushreyo bhavatu: All is perfectly complete!
