༄༅། །མཁན་ཆེན་བསྟོད་པ་འཇམ་དཔལ་མ་ཞེས་བྱ་བ་བཞུགས་སོ། །

Gentle Splendour¹

Praises to the Great Abbot Śāntarakṣita

འཇམ་དཔལ་དཔའ་བོའི་ཞབས་པད་དྲི་མེད་ཉིད། །

jampal pawö zhabpé drimé nyi

While the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī’s pristine lotus feet

ཡན་ལག་མཆོག་གི་པདྨར་རབ་བཀོད་ནས། །

yenlak chok gi pemar rab kö né

Remained elegantly poised atop a perfect lotus,

ཟབ་རྒྱས་ཆོས་ཚུལ་དངོས་སུ་ལེགས་ནོད་པ། །

zabgyé chö tsul ngö su lek nöpa

You perfectly trained in the Dharma, profound and vast —

མཁན་ཆེན་ཞི་བ་འཚོ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

khenchen zhiwatso la chaktsal tö

Mahāpaṇḍita Śāntarakṣita, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

བསྟན་པའི་རྩ་བ་སོ་སོར་ཐར་པ་ཡི། །

tenpé tsawa sosor tarpa yi

Pure, you hold the saffron victory banner,

ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་རྣམ་དག་ངུར་སྨྲིག་རྒྱལ་མཚན་འཆང༌། །

tsultrim namdak ngurmik gyaltsen chang

The pratimokṣa discipline, the root of the teachings.

སྡོམ་བརྩོན་སྡེ་སྣོད་འཛིན་པའི་རྒྱལ་པོར་བསྔགས། །

domtsön denö dzinpé gyalpor ngak

Renowned as the sovereign scripture-holding observer of vows —

ཤཱཀྱའི་སྲས་གཅིག་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

shakyé sé chik khyé la chaktsal tö

Only son of Śākya, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

ཟབ་ཡངས་ཏིང་འཛིན་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཀློང༌། །

zab yang tingdzin gyatso chenpö long

Within the ocean-like expanse of profound and vast samādhi

མངོན་ཤེས་ལ་སོགས་ཡོན་ཏན་ནོར་བུའི་གཏེར། །

ngönshé lasok yönten norbü ter

Lies the treasure box of qualities — clairvoyance and more,

རྒྱལ་སྲས་སྤྱོད་པའི་རླབས་ཕྲེང་ཆེར་གཡོ་བ། །

gyalsé chöpé lab treng cher yowa

Floating amidst the rolling waves of bodhisattva conduct —

བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའི་མཆོག་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

changchub sempé chok la chaktsal tö

Supreme Bodhisattva, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

གཞལ་བྱ་བདེན་པ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་ཚུལ་ཀུན། །

zhalja denpa nyi kyi chö tsul kün

Along the path of perfect reasoning,

ཡང་དག་རིགས་པའི་ལམ་ནས་གསལ་མཛད་པའི། །

yangdak rikpé lam né sal dzepé

Where all dharmas accord with the twofold truth of valid cognition,

ཤེས་རབ་ཉི་ཟླའི་འོད་ཀྱིས་ས་སྟེང་ཁྱབ། །

sherab nyidé ö kyi sateng khyab

Your intelligence pervades the world, like the light of the sun and moon —

མཁས་པའི་དབང་པོ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

khepé wangpo khyé la chaktsal tö

Fount of Learning, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

རང་གཞན་གྲུབ་མཐའ་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་ཕ་རོལ་ཕྱིན། །

rangzhen drubta gyatsö parol chin

Crossing the ocean of Buddhist and non-Buddhist views,

དབུ་སེམས་ཟུང་འཇུག་ཤིང་རྟའི་ལམ་སྲོལ་ཕྱེས། །

u sem zungjuk shingté lam sol ché

You unified the approach of Madhyamaka and Cittamātra,

འཕགས་པའི་ཡུལ་ན་ཉི་ཟླ་ལྟ་བུར་གྲགས། །

pakpé yul na nyida tabur drak

Renowned like the sun and moon throughout the noble land of India —

བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱན་གཅིག་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

tenpé gyen chik khyé la chaktsal tö

Single Gem of the Teachings, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

གངས་ཅན་མུན་པའི་ཁྲོད་དུ་རྒྱལ་བསྟན་མཆོག །

gangchen münpé trö du gyalten chok

In the dark abode of the Snowy Land,

སྣང་བའི་སྒོ་ཆེན་ཐོག་མར་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཕྱེས། །

nangwé gochen tokmar khyö kyi ché

You were the first to open the door to the light of the Buddha’s supreme teachings,

ཡང་དག་ལུང་དང་རིགས་པའི་རྒྱལ་རྔ་བསྒྲགས། །

yangdak lung dang rikpé gyal nga drak

Sounding the royal drum of genuine scripture and reasoning —

མཁན་ཆེན་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོར་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

khenchen chö kyi gyalpor chaktsal tö

Great Abbot, King of Dharma, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

བགྲང་བྱ་བརྒྱ་ཕྲག་དགུ་ཡི་གྲངས་བཞུགས་ཏེ། །

drangja gyatrak gu yi drang zhuk té

Remaining for nine hundred years

འཕགས་ཡུལ་རྒྱ་ནག་གངས་ཅན་ལ་སོགས་པར། །

pakyul gyanak gangchen lasokpar

In the noble land of India and the snows of Tibet,

བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་ཕྱོགས་བཅུར་རབ་ཏུ་བསྒྲེང༌། །

tenpé gyaltsen chok chur rabtu dreng

You hoisted in every quarter the victory banner of the teachings —

བསྟན་འཛིན་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

tendzin gyalpo khyé la chaktsal tö

Royal Holder of the Teachings, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

རྨད་བྱུང་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་སྨོན་ལམ་རྒྱ་མཚོ་དང༌། །

mejung tukkyé mönlam gyatso dang

With marvellous bodhicitta you made an ocean of aspirations,

ཐབས་ལ་མཁས་པའི་རྣམ་རོལ་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཀྱིས། །

tab la khepé namrol natsok kyi

And with skilful means in elaborate display

བཟང་པོའི་ཕྲིན་ལས་ས་སྟེང་ཀུན་ཏུ་ཁྱབ། །

zangpö trinlé sateng küntu khyab

You spread excellent activity throughout the entire world —

བཀའ་དྲིན་འགྲན་མེད་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

kadrin drenmé khyé la chaktsal tö

Matchless Kindness, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

མཐུ་སྟོབས་བདག་པོར་གྱུར་ཀྱང་བྱམས་བརྩེའི་ངང༌། །

tutob dakpor gyur kyang jam tsé ngang

Master of powerful magic, out of kindness and love

ཡོན་ཏན་རྒྱ་མཚོས་དབྱོར་ཀྱང་སྙེམས་མེད་ཞི། །

yönten gyatsö yor kyang nyemmé zhi

You grew rich in an ocean of qualities, yet were mild and humble,

གསང་སྔགས་ས་ལམ་རྫོགས་ཀྱང་དགེ་སྦྱོང་ཚུལ། །

sang ngak salam dzok kyang gejong tsul

You perfected the path of secret mantra, yet maintained the conduct of a bhikṣu —

དམན་རྣམས་རྗེས་སུ་འཛིན་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

men nam jesu dzin la chaktsal tö

Follower of Humble Bearing, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

བོད་འདིར་རྒྱལ་བསྟན་ཇི་སྲིད་གནས་ཀྱི་བར། །

bö dir gyalten jisi né kyi bar

For as long as the Buddha’s teachings remain in Tibet

སྤྲུལ་པའི་བསྟན་འཛིན་ཡང་ཡང་འབྱོན་པ་དང༌། །

trulpé tendzin yangyang jönpa dang

Emanations will come again and again to uphold and spread the Dharma,

བསྟན་ལ་བྱ་བ་བྱེད་པར་ཞལ་གྱིས་བཞེས། །

ten la jawa jepar zhal gyi zhé

Resolute in their work on behalf of the teachings —

གངས་ཅན་མགོན་པོ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

gangchen gönpo khyé la chaktsal tö

Protector of the Snowy Land, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

གང་སྐུ་བསྒོམ་པས་བསྟན་པའི་མངའ་ཐང་འཕེལ། །

gang ku gompé tenpé ngatang pel

For whoever meditates on your form, it is said that the teachings’ domain will flourish,

ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་རྣམ་དག་ཏིང་འཛིན་ཤེས་རབ་རྒྱས། །

tsultrim namdak tingdzin sherab gyé

Pure discipline, samādhi, and intelligence will bloom,

མཐར་གྱིས་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན་རྒྱལ་འགྱུར་ཞེས་གསུངས། །

tar gyi dorjé dzin gyal gyur zhé sung

And the state of Vajra-Wielding Victor will ultimately be attained —

དཔག་མེད་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་གཏེར་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

pakmé tukjé ter la chaktsal tö

Treasury of Immeasurable Compassion, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

དུས་མཐར་རྒྱལ་བའི་བསྟན་པ་ཉམས་དམའ་ཞིང༌། །

dü tar gyalwé tenpa nyam ma zhing

You promised that in the final days, when the teachings are cast aside

བསྟན་རྗེས་འཇུག་རྣམས་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཉམ་ཐག་ཚེ། །

ten jejuk nam shintu nyamtak tsé

And followers of the Dharma are in an abject state,

ཁྱེད་ཉིད་དྲན་པས་སྐྱོབས་པར་འགྱུར་རོ་ཞེས། །

khyé nyi drenpé kyobpar gyur ro zhé

By recalling you we will be protected —

ཞལ་བཞེས་རྗེས་སུ་དྲན་ནོ་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཅན། །

zhalzhé jesu dren no tukjé chen

Compassionate One, remember your pledge!

 

དེང་དུས་སྙིགས་མ་ལྔས་བཅོམ་འགྲོ་བ་རྣམས། །

dengdü nyikma ngé chom drowa nam

Now, during this plundering age of the five degenerations,

ཡང་དག་ལྟ་བའི་དམིགས་རྣམ་རྙེད་དཀའ་ཞིང༌། །

yangdak tawé miknam nyé ka zhing

Without the nectar of discipline and samādhi,

ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་ཏིང་འཛིན་བདུད་རྩིའི་སྐལ་བས་དབེན། །

tsultrim tingdzin dütsi kalwé wen

Beings struggle to find the doctrine of the authentic view,

བསྟན་ལ་འཚེ་བའི་ཕྱོགས་རྣམས་ཆེས་ཆེར་བདོ། །

ten la tsewé chok nam ché cher do

And those who wish to harm the teachings only grow in number.

 

ཆར་ལྡན་དུས་བཟང་རྫོགས་པའི་ནམ་གཞུག་བཞིན། །

charden dü zang dzokpé nam zhuk zhin

When, like the favourable summer rains that come to an early end,

ཅི་ལ་བསམས་ཀྱང་སྐྱོ་བའི་དུས་འདི་ན། །

chi la sam kyang kyowé dü di na

However carefully we plan, there is only failure —

རྒྱལ་ཀུན་མཐུ་སྟོབས་དབང་ཕྱུག་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན། །

gyal kün tutob wangchuk dorjé dzin

Then, ever-victorious powerful Lord, vajra-wielding Protector,

མགོན་པོ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་དམ་བཅའ་མ་བསྙེལ་ཅིག །

gönpo khyö kyi damcha ma nyel chik

Never forget your pledge!

 

སྡེ་སྣོད་རྒྱུད་སྡེའི་འཆད་ཉན་དར་བ་དང༌། །

denö gyüdé chenyen darwa dang

Spread the study and teaching of the scriptures and tantras,

བསླབ་གསུམ་རིམ་གཉིས་རྣལ་འབྱོར་གོང་དུ་འཕེལ། །

lab sum rim nyi naljor gong du pel

Nurture the three trainings and the two stages of yoga,

ལུང་རྟོགས་བསྟན་པའི་མངའ་ཐང་རབ་རྒྱས་པའི། །

lungtok tenpé ngatang rabgyé pé

Increase the dominion of the Dharma of learning and realization —

རྫོགས་ལྡན་དུས་བཟང་གསར་དུ་ངོམས་པར་མཛོད། །

dzokden dü zang sar du ngompar dzö

So that a new era of perfect excellence may arise!

 

སྐྱེ་བ་ཀུན་ཏུ་ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་རྗེས་བཟུང་ནས། །

kyewa küntu khyé kyi jezung né

In each of my lives, may I be your disciple,

རྒྱལ་བ་དགྱེས་པའི་ལམ་ལས་མི་གཡོ་ཞིང༌། །

gyalwa gyepé lam lé mi yo zhing

Never wavering from the path which delights the buddhas.

མཐའ་ཡས་འགྲོ་བ་ཀུན་ཀྱང་རྒྱལ་ཀུན་གྱི། །

tayé drowa kün kyang gyal kün gyi

May each and every being, infinite in number,

གསང་འཛིན་གསང་བའི་བདག་པོ་ཉིད་གྱུར་ཅིག །

sang dzin sangwé dakpo nyi gyur chik

Become the Master of Secrets, holding the secrets of the Victors.

 

ཅེས་ཚིགས་སུ་བཅད་པ་དེ་ཉིད་རྣམ་པ་བཅུ་དྲུག་གི་གྲངས་ལྡན་འདི་ནི་མེ་རྟ་ཟླ་བ་དགུ་པའི་ཚེས་ལྔ་ལ་མི་ཕམ་འཇམ་དཔལ་དགྱེས་པས་བཀོད་པ་དགེ་ལེགས་འཕེལ།།

These verses, equal in number to the sixteen aspects of the Four Truths of the Noble Ones, were written down in the year of the Male Fire Horse, on the fifth lunar day of the ninth month,² by Mipham Jampel Gyepa. May virtue and excellence flourish!
