Sixteenth Karmapa Long-Life Prayer

༄༅། །འཇིག་རྟེན་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཀརྨ་པ་བཅུ་དྲུག་པ་ཆེན་པོ་ལ་ཞབས་བརྟན་དུ་གསོལ་བ་འཆི་མེད་ཚངས་པའི་རྒྱུད་མང་ཞེས་བྱ་བ་བཞུགས།

The Many-Stringed Lute of Immortal Brahmā

A Prayer for the Long Life of the Great Sixteenth Karmapa, Lord of the World

ཨོཾ་སྭསྟི།

om swasti

Oṃ svasti!

དུས་གསུམ་རྒྱལ་བ་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི།    །

dü sum gyalwa gyatso tamché kyi

Supreme single embodiment of the wisdom

ཡེ་ཤེས་གཅིག་ཏུ་བསྡུས་པའི་རང་གཟུགས་མཆོག  །

yeshe chik tu düpé rang zuk chok

Of all the oceanic victors of the three times,

འཇིག་རྟེན་དབང་ཕྱུག་དཔལ་ལྡན་ཀརྨ་པ།    །

jikten wangchuk palden karma pa

Mighty lord of the world, glorious Karmapa,

རང་བྱུང་རིག་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་རྒྱལ་གྱུར་ཅིག  །

rangjung rigpé dorjé gyal gyur chik

Rangjung Rigpé Dorje, may you reign supreme!

 

ངོ་མཚར་སྐྱེ་བའི་ཕྲེང་བ་གསེར་གྱི་རི།    །

ngotsar kyewé trengwa ser gyi ri

Your series of wondrous rebirths, like a chain of golden mountains,

ཚར་དུ་དངར་བས་འཛམ་གླིང་མཐའ་དག་གི    །

tsar du ngarwé dzamling tadak gi

Stands as a great offering-beacon of benefit and happiness

ཕན་དང་བདེ་བའི་མཆོད་སྡོང་ཆེན་པོ་ཡི།    །

pen dang dewé chö dong chenpo yi

For the whole world—

བྱིན་རླབས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་སྣང་བས་དགེ་ལེགས་སྩོལ།    །

jinlab tashi nangwé gelek tsol

May its light of blessings and auspiciousness bestow virtue and excellence!

 

ཁྱད་པར་བྱང་ཕྱོགས་ཁ་བ་ཅན་གྱི་རིར།    །

khyepar jangchok khawachen gyi rir

In this northern land of snowy peaks in particular,

རྒྱལ་བ་མཆོག་དབྱངས་དབང་ཆེན་གྲུབ་མཆོག་བརྙེས།    །

gyalwa chok yang wangchen drub chok nyé

You were the powerful Gyalwa Chokyang, who attained the supreme siddhi,

དུས་གསུམ་ཀུན་མཁྱེན་རིམ་པར་བྱོན་པ་ཡི།    །

dü sum künkhyen rimpar jönpa yi

And the successive incarnations of Düsum Khyenpa, Knower of the Three Times—

ཁམས་གསུམ་འགྲོ་བའི་བླ་མ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

kham sum drowé lama zhabten sol

Guru to the beings of the three realms, may your life remain secure.

 

དཀར་པོའི་ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་རི་བོང་འཛིན་པ་ནི།    །

karpö chok kyi ribong dzinpa ni

Just like the rabbit-bearing moon, which after waxing in stages

ཆ་ཤས་ཡོངས་སུ་འཕེལ་བའི་མཐར་ཐུག་བཞིན།    །

chashé yongsu pelwé tartuk zhin

Finally arrives at its fullest extent,

དགའ་བཞི་ཡེ་ཤེས་བཅུ་དྲུག་རྩེར་སོན་པ།    །

ga zhi yeshe chudruk tser sönpa

You have reached the pinnacle of the four joys and sixteen wisdoms—

ཁྱབ་བདག་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་དབང་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

khyabdak dorjé chang wang zhabten sol

Mighty sovereign Vajradhara, may your life remain secure.

 

རིགས་ཀུན་ཁྱབ་བདག་མི་བསྐྱོད་རྡོ་རྗེ་སེམས།    །

rik kün khyab dak mikyö dorjé sem

Lord of all the buddha families, Akṣobhya Vajrasattva,

གནམ་སྔོན་ཞུན་མར་འཁྱིལ་བའི་ཅོད་པན་ཆེ།    །

nam ngön zhünmar khyilwé chöpen ché

The great crown in which the azure sky is concentrated—

གདོད་ནས་འདུ་འབྲལ་སྤངས་པའི་དབང་རྟགས་འཆང་།    །

döné dudral pangpé wang tak chang

Bearer of this symbol of power from which you’re never separate,¹

དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་བདག་པོ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

kyilkhor gyatsö dakpo zhabten sol

Lord of an ocean of maṇḍalas, may your life remain secure.

 

ཕྱི་ལྟར་སྡོམ་བརྩོན་ངུར་སྨྲིག་འཆང་བའི་གཙོ།    །

chitar domtsön ngurmik changwé tso

Outwardly the foremost of saffron-clad observers of precepts,

ནང་དུ་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་ཀྱི་བདུད་རྩིས་གཏམས།    །

nang du changchub sem kyi dütsi tam

Inwardly replete with the elixir of the mind of awakening,

གསང་བ་བདེ་ཆེན་ཡེ་ཤེས་རོས་མྱོས་པ།    །

sangwa dechen yeshe rö nyöpa

And secretly intoxicated with the wisdom of great bliss—

སུམ་ལྡན་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན་རྒྱལ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

sumden dorjé dzin gyal zhabten sol

Victorious vajra-holder of the three sets of vows, may your life remain secure.

 

མཁྱེན་རབ་ཉི་མའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་འོད་ཟེར་འཛུམ།    །

khyenrab nyimé kyilkhor özer dzum

As light radiates from the solar disc of your perfect wisdom,

བརྩེ་བས་གདུལ་བྱའི་བློ་གྲོས་པད་མོ་འབྱེད།    །

tsewé duljé lodrö pemo jé

With love, you help disciples’ lotus-like intelligence to bloom,

མཐུ་སྟོབས་ནུས་པས་འབྱུང་པོའི་མིག་ལྡོངས་ཤིང་།    །

tutob nüpé jungpö mik dong shing

And your strength and power render jungpo demons blind,

རིགས་གསུམ་སེམས་དཔའི་ངོ་བོར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

rik sum sempé ngowor zhabten sol

Essence of the bodhisattvas of the three families,² may your life remain secure.

 

ཟག་བཅས་ཆོས་ཁམས་ཟག་མེད་དབྱིངས་སུ་འཆིང་།    །

zakché chökham zakmé ying su ching

You have bound tainted phenomena within the immaculate sphere,

འཕོ་བྲལ་འཕོ་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེའི་སྐུ་མཆོག་བརྙེས།    །

podral pomé dorjé ku chok nyé

Gained the supreme deathless vajra-kāya that is beyond transference,

སྲིད་པ་ཇི་སྲིད་ཕྲིན་ལས་འཛད་མེད་པ།    །

sipa jisi trinlé dzé mepa

And now your inexhaustible activity will endure throughout existence—

ཟླ་མེད་མཆོག་གི་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

damé chok gi tulku zhabten sol

Supreme, incomparable nirmāṇakāya, may your life remain secure.

 

འཛམ་གླིང་འདི་ན་པད་དཀར་ལྟར་འཕགས་ཤིང་།    །

dzamling dina pekar tar pak shing

Exalted as a white lotus in this world of Jambudvīpa,

ངོ་མཚར་གཏམ་མང་མངའ་བའི་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ།    །

ngotsar tam mang ngawé trulpé ku

Nirmāṇakāya of whom wondrous accounts abound,

སྲིད་གསུམ་འགྲན་ཟླ་བྲལ་བའི་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྗེ།    །

si sum drenda dralwé chö kyi jé

Dharma lord without peer in the three planes of existence—

ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་བསྐལ་བརྒྱར་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ།    །

chökyi gyalpo kal gyar zhabten sol

King of Dharma, may your life remain secure for a hundred aeons.

 

རྩོད་དུས་བསྟན་འགྲོ་ཡོངས་ཀྱི་སྐྱབས་གཅིག་པུ།    །

tsödü ten dro yong kyi kyab chikpu

Sole refuge for the teachings and beings in this age of strife,

སེང་གེའི་ང་རོར་འཚང་རྒྱ་ཀརྨ་པ།    །

sengé ngaror tsang gya karma pa

Karmapa, the one who will awaken as Lion’s Roar,

ས་དང་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ལྷུན་པོ་གནས་ཀྱི་བར།    །

sa dang gyatso lhünpo né kyi bar

For as long as earth, oceans and mountains endure,

ཞབས་པད་རྡོ་རྗེའི་ཁྲི་ལ་བརྟན་གྱུར་ཅིག  །

zhabpé dorjé tri la ten gyur chik

May your lotus feet remain upon the vajra throne.

 

དེ་ལྟར་གསོལ་བཏབ་བདེན་པའི་ཚིག་འདི་དག  །

detar soltab denpé tsik didak

May the gurus, Three Roots and dharma guardians

བླ་མ་རྩ་གསུམ་ཆོས་སྐྱོང་སྲུང་མ་ཡིས།    །

lama tsa sum chökyong sungma yi

Confer their true blessings upon these truthful words

ཇི་ལྟར་སྨོན་པ་བཞིན་དུ་གེགས་མེད་པར།    །

jitar mönpa zhindu gek mepar

Of prayer, so that they may swiftly be fulfilled

མྱུར་དུ་འགྲུབ་པའི་བྱིན་རླབས་བདེན་པ་སྩོལ།    །

nyurdu drubpé jinlab denpa tsol

Without impediment and just as I aspire.

 

རྒྱལ་བསྟན་རིན་ཆེན་དར་ཞིང་རྒྱས་པ་དང་།    །

gyalten rinchen dar zhing gyepa dang

May the precious teachings of the Victorious Ones spread far and wide,

དགེ་འདུན་འདུས་པའི་སྡེ་ཚོགས་རབ་འཕེལ་ཞིང་།    །

gendün düpé dé tsok rabpel zhing

The communities of the saṅgha prosper and grow in number,

ཆོས་དང་སྲིད་ཀྱི་ཕུན་ཚོགས་དཔལ་ཡོན་རྒྱས།    །

chö dang si kyi püntsok palyön gyé

The splendours of spiritual and temporal perfection increase,

འཇིག་རྟེན་ཀུན་ཏུ་དགེ་བའི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག  །

jikten küntu gewé tashi shok

And all the worlds be favoured with the auspiciousness of virtue.

 

ཁྱད་པར་ངེས་དོན་སྒྲུབ་བརྒྱུད་རིན་པོ་ཆེ།    །

khyepar ngedön drubgyü rinpoche

May the precious lineage of definitive accomplishment in particular

བཤད་དང་སྒྲུབ་པས་འཛམ་གླིང་ཀུན་ཏུ་ཁྱབ།    །

shé dang drubpé dzamling küntu khyab

Spread throughout the world through teaching and through practice.

ས་ཆེན་མཁས་དང་གྲུབ་པའི་ཚོགས་ཀྱིས་ཁེངས།    །

sa chen khé dang drubpé tsok kyi kheng

May this great earth be filled with hosts of scholars and adepts,

དགེ་ལེགས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་སྣང་བ་རྒྱས་པར་ཤོག  །

gelek tashi nangwa gyepar shok

And may the light of excellence and auspiciousness expand.

 

ཅེས་པའང་འཇིག་རྟེན་གསུམ་གྱི་སྒྲོན་མེ་རྒྱལ་མཆོག་ཀརྨ་པ་བཅུ་དྲུག་པ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཞབས་ལ་བརྟན་བཞུགས་སུ་གསོལ་བའི་སྨོན་ཚིག་འདི་ནི་འཇམ་དབྱངས་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་དབང་པོའི་ཕྲིན་ལས་ཀྱི་བྱེད་པོར་དབུགས་དབྱུང་ཐོབ་པ་མགོན་པོ་མཆོག་གི་བཀའ་འབངས་འཇམ་དབྱངས་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་རིས་མེད་བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་དུ་འབོད་པས་མཚུར་མདོ་བོ་ལུང་གི་དགོན་པར་མེ་སྤྲེལ་གནམ་ལོ་གསར་འཆར་གྱི་དུས་ཚེས་དགེ་བར་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་བཞིན་བྲིས་ཏེ་ཕུལ་བ།  རྗེ་བཙུན་བླ་མ་ཞབས་པད་བསྐལ་བརྒྱར་བཞུགས་པའི་རྒྱུར་འགྱུར་བར་བླ་མ་རྒྱལ་བ་སྲས་བཅས་ཀྱིས་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ།།    །།

These verses of aspiration and prayer for the longevity of the great Sixteenth Karmapa, supreme victor and beacon for the three worlds, were written and offered by the sublime protector’s disciple, one who was confirmed as an agent of the enlightened activity of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and who is called Jamyang Chökyi Lodrö Rimé Tenpai Gyaltsen, in the monastery of the Tsurphu Valley on the excellent day when the new Fire Monkey year first dawned. I pray that the gurus, victorious ones and their heirs may grant their blessings, so that this may serve as a cause for the noble guru’s life to remain steadfast for a hundred aeons.
