Just as gold...
Just as gold...
attributed to Buddha Śākyamuni[1]
O monks and learned ones,
Just as gold is burnt, cut and rubbed,
Examine my words carefully and
Do not accept them simply out of respect.

This version, which is the standard form, appears in Śāntarakṣita’s Tattvasaṃgraha, where it is not attributed to any particular sūtra.
A slightly different version is found in chapter one of the Mahābālatantra (stobs po che'i rgyud, Toh 391): bsregs bcad bdar ba'i gser bzhin du/ /yongs su brtags nas nga yi bka'/ /blang bar bya yi mos pa'am/ /gzhan gyi mkhas pa 'jug mi bya/ /. ↩
