Just as gold...

attributed to Buddha Śākyamuni[1]

O monks and learned ones,
Just as gold is burnt, cut and rubbed,
Examine my words carefully and
Do not accept them simply out of respect.

Śāntarakṣita’s Tattvasaṃgraha, chapter 30

| Translated by Adam Pearcey, 2004. Revised and updated for Lotsawa House, 2025.

Version: 1.0-20251008

  1. This version, which is the standard form, appears in Śāntarakṣita’s Tattvasaṃgraha, where it is not attributed to any particular sūtra.

A slightly different version is found in chapter one of the Mahābālatantra (stobs po che'i rgyud, Toh 391): bsregs bcad bdar ba'i gser bzhin du/ /yongs su brtags nas nga yi bka'/ /blang bar bya yi mos pa'am/ /gzhan gyi mkhas pa 'jug mi bya/ /.  ↩
