Yungtön’s Homage
The Homage Spoken by Yungtön
from the Heart-Essence of the Ḍākinīs
Emaho!
Homage to the three-kāya victors, the bhūmi-dwelling vidyādharas,
The wondrous and amazing master of Oḍḍiyāna and consort,
The prophesied tertön and nirmāṇakāya heart-son,
The peerless king of Dharma, the Karmapa,
Heart-son of the Dharma Lord, incomparable Chadralwa,
And Śākya Gönpo, in whose wisdom the nectar of the lineage is distilled—
To all root and lineage gurus, I prostrate!
To free myself from the beginningless cycle of saṃsāra,
I was born in this final age by the force of karmic winds,
As a poor, foolish, ignorant, small-minded kusulu
In a remote border region, fainthearted and discouraged,
A wandering beggar with little learning.
Through the compassion of the guru, yidam, and ḍākinīs,
I was accepted by noble teachers, who liberated my mind.
And this, the ultimate realization of all victorious ones,
The pinnacle of vehicles, the heart essence of Dzogchen,
Has matured in me by way of a succession of adepts.
How fortunate am I to have met this profound path!
Orgyen, in his compassion for beings of the future,
Concealed the profound Heart-Essence of Ḍākinīs as treasure.
As foretold, the learned and virtuous master, Tsultrim Dorje,
Revealed the profound treasure in the female Water Ox year.[1]
Then, after thirty-six years, in the female Earth Ox year,[2]
On the third day of the waxing moon of the first month,
The master[3] transmitted the elaborate and unelaborate empowerments,
And especially the fivefold empowerment and that of rigpa’s creative power,
And entrusted the tantra of liberation upon wearing, its commentary, and practical instructions,
The guidance manuals for Trekchö and Tögal, the introduction,
The supporting teachings, prophecies, and essential instructions,
Teachings on the channels, winds and essences, tummo, and austerities,
Instructions for the moment of death, preparedness and the bardos,
Empowerment rites, offering texts, sādhanas, and meditation guides,
The common activities, protective deities,
Reliable historical records and accurate inventory—
Full empowerments, full teaching, all the texts, the complete transmission,
All were entrusted completely. Such kindness!
He granted this to worthy vessels and kept it from the unworthy.
How fortunate I was to receive approval and entrustment!
Beginning on the third day of the Miracle Month,
Through to the waxing moon of summer, the fourth month,
For three and a half months, I strove to accomplish great purpose
And discovered unassailable certainty. What kindness!
Through stable force of familiarisation in a state of realization,
May naturally free awareness beyond limits and extremes,
The basic condition, effortless and spontaneously present—
The utterly pure essence—be made manifest!

That is, 1349. Literally: during the thirty-seventh year thereafter. In his history of the Khandro Nyingtik, Yungtön says that he received the transmission from Karmapa Rangjung Dorje in the male Water Monkey year of 1332. This must therefore refer to another transmission. ↩
