A Drop of Sunshine

A Guru Yoga for Lord Marpa

དབུས་སུ་རྒྱལ་བའི་སྤྱི་གཟུགས་ཆེ།  །

ü su gyalwé chizuk ché

In the centre is the embodiment of all victors—

ཕྱི་ལྟར་མར་པ་ལོ་ཙཱ་བ།  །

chitar marpa lotsawa

Outwardly he is Marpa Lotsāwa,

ནང་ལྟར་ཌོམྦྷའི་ཧེ་རུ་ཀ  །

nangtar dombhé heruka

Inwardly he is Ḍombī Heruka,

གསང་བ་ཤྲཱི་ཧེ་བཛྲ།   །

sangwa shiri hé benza

And secretly he is noble Hevajra.

 

དམར་སྨུག་ཁྲོ་འཛུམ་ཧུར་བག་ཅན།   །

marmuk tro dzum hur bakchen

Brown in colour, he bears a wrathful frown and an intent gaze.

ཟིལ་དང་གཟི་བརྗིད་བསམ་མི་ཁྱབ།  །

zil dang ziji sam mikhyab

He radiates inconceivable splendor and majesty.

རྣལ་འབྱོར་སྔགས་བཙུན་དཀྱུས་མའི་ཆས།  །

naljor ngak tsün kyü mé ché

Wearing the simple attire of a tantric practitioner,

རོལ་སྟབས་ངལ་གསོའི་ཕྱག་རྒྱ་མཛད།   །

rol tab ngalsö chakgya dzé

He sits in the revelling posture and displays the resting-mind mudrā.

 

ཞལ་མཇལ་དབང་བཞི་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ།   །

zhal jal wang zhi gyü la kyé

By seeing his face, the four empowerments take effect within.

གསུང་ཐོས་ཐ་མལ་སྣང་བ་འགགས།   །

sung tö tamal nangwa gak

By hearing his voice, ordinary appearances come to a halt.

དྲན་པས་ལྷན་སྐྱེས་ཡེ་ཤེས་འཕོ།   །

drenpé lhenkyé yeshe po

By thinking of him, co-emergent wakefulness is imparted.

 

ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྤོབས་པ་ཆེན་པོ་ཡི།  །

chö kyi pobpa chenpo yi

Through his great confidence in the Dharma,

གཞན་སྣང་ཟིལ་ནོན་བྱིན་ཐིབས་སེ།  །

zhennang zil nön jin tib sé

He subdues the perceptions of others; such is the power of his presence.

དོན་བརྒྱུད་རྟོགས་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱི།   །

dön gyü tokpé yeshe kyi

Through the wisdom that realises the ultimate,

གཞན་རྒྱུད་གྲོལ་བར་ནུས་པ་ཡི།  །

zhen gyü drolwar nüpa yi

He is able to liberate the mindstreams of others.

བག་དྲོ་འུར་རེ་བཞུགས་པར་གསལ།   །

bak dro ur ré zhukpar sal

Thus he is seated before me, radiating resplendence.

 

བླ་མ་སྐུ་ཡི་གནས་ལྔ་རུ།   །

lama ku yi né nga ru

At the five places of the Guru’s body:

སྤྱི་བོར་གསང་འདུས་སྐུ་རྡོ་རྗེ།   །

chiwor sangdü ku dorjé

At his crown is Guhyasamāja, vajra form,

མགྲིན་པར་མ་ཡ་གསུང་རྡོ་རྗེ།   །

drinpar maya sung dorjé

At his throat is Māyā, vajra speech,

ཐུགས་ཀར་སྐྱེ་རྡོར་ཐུགས་རྡོ་རྗེ།   །

tukkar kyedor tuk dorjé

At his heart centre is Hevajra, vajra heart,

ལྟེ་བར་བདེ་མཆོག་ཡོན་ཏན་བདག   །

tewar demchok yönten dak

At his navel is Cakrasaṃvara, lord of qualities,

གསང་བར་འཇིགས་བྱེད་ཕྲིན་ལས་དཔལ།   །

sangwar jikjé trinlé pal

And at his secret place is Yamāntaka, master of activities.

 

དབུ་གཙུག་སྟེང་ཕྱོགས་ཡས་རིམ་བཞིན།   །

u tsuk tengchok yé rimzhin

Above his head, seated one above the other, are

བཅུ་གཉིས་བཀའ་སྤྱད་པཎྜི་ཏ།   །

chunyi ka ché pandita

The paṇḍita who underwent twelve trials,

སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ་མཆོག་ནཱ་རོ་པ།   །

trulpé ku chok naropa

Supreme nirmāṇakāya Nāropa;

བཀའ་བབས་བཞི་འཛིན་གྲུབ་པའི་བདག   །

kabab zhi dzin drubpé dak

Lord of siddhas, holder of the four transmissions,

ལོངས་སྤྱོད་རྫོགས་སྐུ་ཏེ་ལོ་པ།   །

longchö dzok ku té lopa

Sambhogakāya Tilopa;

ཁ་སྦྱོར་བདུན་ལྡན་དྲུག་པའི་དཔལ།   །

khajor dünden drukpé pal

Glory of the sixth family, sovereign of the sevenfold unity,

ཆོས་སྐུ་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་ཆེན་པོ།   །

chöku dorjé chang chenpo

Dharmakāya Vajradhara.

 

མར་སྟོན་བཞུགས་པའི་ཕྱོགས་བཞི་རུ།   །

mar tön zhukpé chok zhi ru

Below him in the four cardinal directions are his four main disciples:

 

མེ་ལོང་ཡེ་ཤེས་མཚུལ་སྟོན་དབང་།   །

melong yeshe tsul tön wang

Tsürtön Wanggi Dorje,¹ mirror-like wisdom,

བླ་མས་སྤྱི་མཛད་ལེགས་པར་མཐོང་།   །

lamé chi dzé lekpar tong

Who saw the Guru’s every deed as excellent

མ་བསྒོམ་འཕོ་བའི་བཀའ་ཆེན་བབས།   །

ma gom powé ka chen bab

And received the lineage of powa without training.

སེངྒེ་ལྟ་བུའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ།   །

sengé tabü naljorpa

This lion-like yogi is seated with his palms joined

དད་གུས་ཐུགས་ཀར་ཐལ་སྦྱར་མཛད།   །

dé gü tukkar taljar dzé

In devotion at his heart centre.

 

མཉམ་ཉིད་ཡེ་ཤེས་རྔོག་ཆོས་རྡོར།   །

nyamnyi yeshe ngok chö dor

Ngok Chöku Dorjé, wisdom of equality,

ཅི་ཡོད་བླ་མའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འབུལ།   །

chi yö lamé chok su bul

Who offered whatever he had to the Guru,

གཞུང་བཤད་ཆུ་བོའི་བཀའ་ཆེན་བབས།   །

zhung shé chuwö ka chen bab

And received the scholarly lineage.

རྒྱ་སྟག་ལྟ་བུའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ།   །

gya tak tabü naljorpa

This yogi, like a Bengal tigress, is seated majestically,

བག་དྲོ་བརྗིད་ཆགས་ཆོས་འཆད་མཛད།   །

bak dro ji chak chö ché dzé

His hands in the Dharma-expounding mudrā.

 

སོར་རྟོག་ཡེ་ཤེས་མྱེས་སྟོན་ཚོམ།    །

sortok yeshe nyé tön tsom

Metön Tsönpo,² discerning wisdom,

ཅི་མཉེས་བླ་མའི་ཕྲིན་ལས་སྒྲུབས།   །

chi nyé lamé trinlé drub

Who did whatever would please the Guru

འོད་གསལ་འཕོ་བའི་བཀའ་ཆེན་བབས།   །

ösal powé ka chen bab

And received the lineage of the transference of luminosity.

ཁྱུང་ཆེན་ལྟ་བུའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ།   །

khyung chen tabü naljorpa

This garuḍa-like yogi is seated in unwavering samadhi

ཏིང་འཛིན་གཡོ་མེད་མཉམ་བཞག་མཛད།   །

tingdzin yomé nyamzhak dzé

With his hands in the mudrā of equipoise.

 

བྱ་གྲུབ་ཡེ་ཤེས་མི་ལ་རྗེ།  །

ja drub yeshe mi la jé

Lord Mila, all-accomplishing wisdom,

ཅི་གསུང་བླ་མའི་བཀའ་ལ་ཉན།  །

chi sung lamé ka la nyen

Who heeded the Guru’s every command

བདེ་དྲོད་གཏུམ་མོའི་བཀའ་ཆེན་བབས།  །

dé drö tummö ka chen bab

And received the lineage of fierce blissful heat.

བྱ་རྒོད་ལྟ་བུའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ།   །

jagö tabü naljorpa

This vulture-like yogi radiates both sorrow and joy,

དགའ་སྐྱོའི་ཉམས་འབར་ཕྱག་བསྟབས་བསྒྱུར།   །

ga kyö nyam bar chak tab gyur

While displaying hand gestures.

 

གཡས་སུ་དར་མ་མདོ་སྡེ་འབུམ།   །

yé su dar ma dodé bum

To Marpa’s right is Darma Dodé Bum,

མཚན་དཔེའི་དཔལ་འབར་དགའ་སྤྲོའི་ཉམས།   །

tsenpé palbar ga trö nyam

Resplendent with the major and minor marks and a joyful countenance.

གཡོན་དུ་ཡུམ་མཆོག་བདག་མེད་མ།   །

yön du yum chok dakmema

To Marpa’s left is his supreme consort Dagmema,

བདེ་སྟོང་གཟི་འབར་སྙིང་རྗེའི་ཉམས།   །

detong zibar nyingjé nyam

Aglow with blissful emptiness and a compassionate expression.

 

གཙོ་བོའི་ཕྱོགས་དང་ཕྱོགས་མཚམས་ལ།   །

tsowö chok dang choktsam la

Surrounding Marpa, in the cardinal and intermediate directions,

བཀའ་བརྒྱུད་བླ་མ་སྤྲིན་ལྟར་གཏིབས།   །

kagyü lama trin tar tib

Are a gathering of Kagyü gurus like billowing banks of clouds;

རྒྱུད་སྡེའི་ལྷ་ཚོགས་འཇའ་ལྟར་ཤར།   །

gyüdé lhatsok ja tar shar

An assembly of deities of the classes of tantra, radiant as rainbows,

མཁའ་འགྲོ་ཉི་ཟེར་རྡུལ་ལྟར་འཁྲིགས།   །

khandro nyizer dul tar trik

A mass of ḍākinīs like dust particles in sunbeams,

ཆོས་སྐྱོང་བུ་ཡུག་བཞིན་དུ་འཚུབས།

chökyong buyuk zhindu tsub

And a horde of Dharma protectors like a swirling snowstorm.

 

ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿཧཱུཾ་མ་ཧཱ་གུ་རུ་དྷརྨཱ་མ་ཏི་ཧྲཱིཿསྭཱ་ཧཱ།

om ah hung maha guru dharma mati hrih soha

oṃ āḥ hūṃ mahā guru dharmamati hrīḥ svāhā

 

ཞེས་ལྷོ་གྲོ་བོ་ལུང་དུ་པདྨ་ཕྲིན་ལས་སྙིང་པོའམ་ཀརྨ་ཕྲིན་ལས་རྒྱ་མཚོས་སྦྱར་བའོ།།
