Calling the Guru from Afar

དུས་གསུམ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་སྤྱི་གཟུགས།  །

dü sum sangye kyi chizuk

Epitome of the Buddhas of the three times,

སྐྱབས་གནས་ཀུན་འདུས་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ།  །

kyabné kündü kyi ngowo

Embodiment of all sources of refuge,

མཁྱེན་བརྩེ་ནུས་གསུམ་གྱི་བདག་ཉིད།   །

khyen tsé nü sum gyi daknyi

Personification of wisdom, love and potential,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཡི་ཁྱབ་བདག   །

kyilkhor gyatso yi khyabdak

Sovereign of oceanic maṇḍalas,

མཁའ་འགྲོ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་དཔའ་བོ།  །

khandro tamché kyi pawo

Hero to all the ḍākinīs,

ཆོས་སྐྱོང་ཀུན་འདུས་ཀྱི་རྗེ་བོ།  །

chökyong kündü kyi jewo

And lord over all dharma guardians,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།   །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

བསྟན་པའི་ཁུར་ཆེན་གྱི་ཤིང་རྟ།  །

tenpé khur chen gyi shingta

Chariot for the great cargo of the teachings,

འཁོར་བ་དུང་སྤྲུག་གི་ལྕགས་ཀྱུ།  །

khorwa dung truggi chakkyu

Iron hook that dredges saṃsāra’s depths,

མ་རིག་མུན་སེལ་གྱི་སྒྲོན་མེ།   །

marik münsel gyi drönmé

Lamp that dispels confusion’s darkness,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།     །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

བསླབ་གསུམ་རྣམ་དག་གི་སྡོང་པོ།  །

lab sum namdak gi dongpo

Vital tree of the three pure trainings,

དགོས་འདོད་ཀུན་འབྱུང་གི་ནོར་བུ།   །

gödö künjung gi norbu

Gem that grants every wish and desire,

སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཚོ་སྐེམ་གྱི་ཉི་མ།   །

dukngal tso kem gyi nyima

Sun that dries up the ocean of suffering,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།   །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

བླ་མ་མཁྱེན།

lama khyen

Lama care for me!

བླ་མ་མཁྱེན།

lama khyen

Lama care for me!

བླ་མ་མཁྱེན།

lama khyen

Lama care for me!

བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།   །

lama rang khyen no

O lama, please care for me!

 

ཉོན་མོངས་དུག་ལྔ་ཡིས་གདུང་བའི།  །

nyönmong duk nga yi dungwé

Whenever I’m tormented by the blazing fires

འབར་བའི་མེ་ཆེན་རང་མཆེད་དུས།  །

barwé mé chen rang ché dü

Of the five poisonous emotions,

ཡེ་ཤེས་བསིལ་རྡུལ་རྒྱུན་འབེབས་པར།  །

yeshe sil dul gyün bebpar

Shower down the cooling nectar of your wisdom—

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

ལྷ་སྔགས་ཏིང་འཛིན་གྱི་ལམ་ལ།  །

lha ngak tingdzin gyi lam la

When I’m practising the path of deity, mantra and samādhi

ཨ་འཐས་ཞེན་འཛིན་གྱིས་བཅིངས་ཚེ།   །

até zhen dzin gyi ching tsé

And become bound by fixation upon their concrete reality,

སྣང་སྟོང་འཛིན་བྲལ་དུ་སྟོན་པར།  །

nangtong dzindral du tönpar

Show appearance and emptiness to be beyond grasping –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

ཀ་དག་ཁྲེགས་ཆོད་ཀྱི་ལྟ་བ།  །

kadak trekchö kyi tawa

When the view that cuts through to primordial purity¹

བསམ་གཟུགས་སྟོང་ཞེན་གྱིས་སྒྲིབ་ཚེ།  །

sam zuk tong zhen gyi drib tsé

Is obscured by the vacant attachment of dhyānas and the formless,

གཅེར་མཐོང་རང་གྲོལ་དུ་སྟོན་པར།  །

cher tong rangdrol du tönpar

Reveal the natural liberation that occurs when seeing with naked vision –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

ལྷུན་གྲུབ་ཐོད་རྒལ་གྱི་སྒོམ་པ།  །

lhündrub tögal gyi gompa

When meditation on spontaneous presence, Tögal,

གཉིས་སྣང་ཞེན་རྟོག་གིས་བཅིངས་ཚེ།   །

nyinang zhen tok gi ching tsé

Is confined by thoughts involving dualistic perception,

གཉིས་མེད་རང་སྣང་དུ་སྟོན་པར།  །

nyimé rangnang du tönpar

Reveal the natural appearance of non-duality –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།     །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

མ་འགགས་སྤྱོད་པ་ཡི་ལམ་འཁྱེར།  །

magak chöpa yi lamkhyer

With my conduct unhindered and everything taken as the path,

རྣམ་གཡེང་བདུད་ཀྱིས་བར་བཅད་ན།  །

namyeng dü kyiwar ché na

Should the demon of distraction try to intervene,

ཡེ་གདལ་གཉུག་མ་རུ་སྟོན་པར།  །

yé dal nyukma ru tönpar

Reveal the ever-pervasive natural state –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།   །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

ཚེ་འདིར་དབེན་པ་རུ་རྩེ་གཅིག   །

tsé dir wenpa ru tsechik

That I may spend this life in isolation with single-pointed focus,

གཞི་ལམ་འབྲས་བུ་ཡི་ཉམས་ལེན།  །

zhi lam drebu yi nyamlen

Complete the practices of ground, path and fruition

མཐར་ཕྱིན་འོད་སྐུ་རུ་གྲོལ་བར།  །

tarchin öku ru drolwar

And achieve liberation in a body of light –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།   །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

གལ་ཏེ་གཞི་ཀློང་དུ་མ་གྱུར།  །

galté zhi long duma gyur

If I’m unable to actualise basic space during my lifetime,

བར་དོར་སྒྱུ་ལུས་དག་འཇིག་ཚེ།  །

bardor gyulü dak jik tsé

Then in the bardo when this illusory body disintegrates,

ན་ཚ་རོ་སྙོམས་སུ་རྟོགས་པར།  །

natsa ronyom su tokpar

That I may realise all discomfort to be of one taste –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

འཆི་བ་ཆོས་སྐུ་ཡི་བར་དོ།  །

chiwa chöku yi bardo

At the time of death, the dharmakāya bardo,

སྣང་མཆེད་ཐོབ་གསུམ་ཀུན་ཐིམ་དུས།  །

nang ché tob sum kün tim dü

When appearance, increase, and near-attainment all dissolve,

འོད་གསལ་ཆོས་སྐུ་རུ་གྲོལ་བར།  །

ösal chöku ru drolwar

That I may be freed in the natural luminosity of dharmakāya –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

ཆོས་ཉིད་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་ཀྱི་བར་དོ།  །

chönyi lhündrub kyi bardo

In the bardo of spontaneously present dharmatā,

འཇིགས་རུང་ཞི་ཁྲོ་ཡི་འཆར་ཚེ།   །

jikrung zhitro yi char tsé

When the terrifying peaceful and wrathful deities arise,

རང་སྣང་ལོངས་སྐུ་རུ་གྲོལ་བར།    །

rangnang longku ru drolwar

That I may be freed in the sambhogakāya of self-manifestation –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

དབུགས་དབྱུང་སྲིད་པ་ཡི་བར་དོ།  །

ukyung sipa yi bardo

Finding relief in the bardo of becoming,

མ་དག་འཁྲུལ་སྣང་གིས་གཡེང་དུས།  །

ma dak trulnang gi yeng dü

When distracted by impure delusory appearances,

སྤྲུལ་སྐུའི་ཞིང་མཆོག་ཏུ་འདྲེན་པར།   །

tulkü zhing chok tu drenpar

Guide me to the supreme nirmāṇakāya buddhafield –

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་རང་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

tsawé lama rang khyen no

Root guru, care for me!

 

གདུང་དབྱངས་འོ་དོད་ཀྱི་སྒྲ་ཡིས།  །

dung yang odö kyi dra yi

As I cry out to you with yearning,

རྩེ་གཅིག་གསོལ་བ་རང་འདེབས་སོ།  །

tsechik solwa rang deb so

In this single-pointed supplication,

ཐུགས་རྗེས་གཡེལ་མེད་དུ་གཟིགས་ནས།  །

tukjé yelmé du zik né

Look upon me with unwavering compassion

བྱིན་རླབས་ཆར་ཆེན་རང་ཕོབས་ཅིག  །

jinlab char chen rang pob chik

And shower down great rains of blessings!

 

ཀུན་བཟང་བཀའ་བརྒྱུད་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ།  །

kunzang kagyü kyi ngowo

Essence of the oral lineage of Samantabhadra,

ཡོངས་འདུས་ཡིད་བཞིན་གྱི་ནོར་བུ།  །

yongdü yizhin gyi norbu

All-embodying wish-fulfilling jewel,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་ཁྱེད་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

tsawé lama khyé khyen no

O root guru, may you care for me!

མཆོག་ཐུན་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་སྩོལ་ཅིག  །

choktün ngödrub kün tsol chik

Please bestow all accomplishments, common and supreme!

 

ཅེས་པའང་ཚིག་བཅད་ཆ་ཤས་མ་གཏོགས་བླ་མ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་མུན་སེལ་ནས་མཛད་པའོ།། །།
