Words of Encouragement for the Authentic Path

རིགས་གསུམ་སེམས་དཔའི་གདུལ་ཞིང་གངས་རིའི་ལྗོངས། །
rik sum sempé dul zhing gangri jong
Guardians of this land of snowy peaks, the arena of bodhisattvas of the three families,
སྐྱོང་མཛད་མཁན་སློབ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་ལོ་པཎ་དང་། །
kyong dzé khen lob trulpé lo pen dang
Abbot and master, and emanated translators and paṇḍitas,
མདོ་སྔགས་བསྟན་པའི་སྲོག་ཤིང་ཇི་སྙེད་པ། །
do ngak tenpé sokshing jinyepa
And all the life-pillars of the teachings of sūtra and mantra,
བྱོན་དང་འབྱོན་གྱུར་ཀུན་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
jön dang jön gyur kün la chaktsal lo
To all who have come and who are yet to come, I pay homage!
ཁྱད་པར་འཁོར་ལོ་གསུམ་གྱི་མཛད་ཕྲིན་གྱིས། །
khyepar khorlo sum gyi dzetrin gyi
In particular, those who through the three spheres of activity
སངས་རྒྱས་བསྟན་པའི་བྱ་བ་ཟླ་བྲལ་བ། །
sangye tenpé jawa da dralwa
Were unparalleled in their work for the Buddhist teachings,
གསང་ཆེན་ལམ་གྱིས་གྲུབ་པའི་སར་གཤེགས་པའི། །
sang chen lam gyi drubpé sar shekpé
And who reached accomplishment through the great secret path:
རྗེ་བཙུན་གོང་མ་ལྔ་ཡིས་བདག་རྒྱུད་སྐྱོང་། །
jetsün gongma nga yi dak gyü kyong
Five venerable forefathers, protect and nurture my mind!
རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་གི་ཞལ་ལུང་བདུད་རྩིའི་ཆུ། །
dorjé chang gi zhallung dütsi chu
Let the river of elixir that is the oral transmission from Vajradhara,
ཚད་མ་གསུམ་གྱིས་གཉེར་ཁས་ལེགས་དྲངས་པའི། །
tsema sum gyi nyer khé lek drangpé
Carefully channeled through the three forms of validity1
གསུང་ངག་སློབ་བཤད་མན་ངག་རྒྱུད་དང་བཅས། །
sung ngak lobshé mengak gyü dangché
As private instructions, pith instructions and tantras
བླ་མའི་དྲིན་གྱིས་སེམས་ཀྱི་ཡོལ་གོར་འཁྱིལ། །
lamé drin gyi sem kyi yol gor khyil
Collect, through the guru’s kindness, in the vessel of my mind.
ཚེ་རབས་སྔོན་གྱི་སྦྱངས་པ་ཆུང་ན་ཡང་། །
tserab ngön gyi jangpa chung na yang
Although my training in former lives was meagre,
ཚེ་འདིར་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་ཀྱིས་རིང་བསྐྱངས་པས། །
tsé dir geweshé kyi ring kyangpé
Still, through the teacher’s persistent care in this life,
ཆོས་དང་ཆོས་མིན་འབྱེད་པའི་བློ་མིག་དང་། །
chö dang chö min jepé lo mik dang
I acquired the capacity to discern Dharma from non-Dharma,
ཡང་དག་ཆོས་ལ་མོས་པའི་བློ་གྲོས་ཐོབ། །
yangdak chö la möpé lodrö tob
And the intelligence to seek out genuine teachings.
ལྷ་དང་བླ་མའི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་འོད་སྣང་གིས། །
lha dang lamé tukjé ö nang gi
Through the brilliant light of the deity and guru’s compassion,
མུན་པར་སྒྲོན་མེ་བཏེགས་པ་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ། །
münpar drönmé tekpa jizhin du
As if a lamp had been held aloft in the darkness,
གསང་ཆེན་ལམ་འབྲས་མན་ངག་དོན་དང་འཕྲད། །
sang chen lamdré mengak dön dang tré
I encountered the instructions of the great secret Path With Its Fruit,
གེགས་མེད་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་ལེགས་པའི་ལམ་དུ་འགྲིགས། །
gekmé tendrel lekpé lam du drik
And circumstances fell into place positively and without hindrance.
ཚུར་མཐོང་རྙེད་དང་བཀུར་སྟིའི་བགོ་སྐལ་ཡང་། །
tsur tong nyé dang kurti go kal yang
If the narrow-minded regard even a shred of gain and honour
ལྷ་ཡི་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཉིད་དུ་ལྟ་བྱེད་ན། །
lha yi ngödrub nyi du tajé na
As a form of blessing from the gods,
ཚེགས་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེའི་ལམ་བཟང་ལ་སྤྱོད་པ། །
tsekmé dorjé lamzang la chöpa
Then practising this excellent vajra path without difficulty
ལྷ་ཡི་དངོས་གྲུབ་ནམ་ཡང་བསྙོན་པ་མེད། །
lha yi ngödrub namyang nyönpamé
Surely cannot be anything other than divine advantage!
ཨེ་མ་གསང་ཆེན་སྔ་འགྱུར་ཆོས་ལ་ཞུགས། །
ema sang chen ngagyur chö la zhuk
Ema! I entered into the Dharma of the Ancient Translations, the Great Secret,
འཕགས་ཡུལ་མཁས་པའི་གཞུང་ལ་ཅུང་ཟད་སྦྱངས། །
pakyul khepé zhung la chungzé jang
And learned a little of the works of scholars from the noble land.
ཕྱོགས་ཞེན་མེད་པའི་སེམས་ཀྱི་བརྟགས་བྱས་པས། །
chok zhen mepé sem kyi tak jepé
Through investigating with a mind free from partiality
དཔལ་ལྡན་ས་སྐྱའི་ཆོས་ལ་ཡིད་ཆེས་སྐྱེས། །
palden sakyé chö la yiché kyé
I developed trust in the glorious Sakya teachings.
ད་དུང་དུ་ཡང་རྒྱལ་བའི་བསྟན་པ་ལ། །
dadung du yang gyalwé tenpa la
Still, as I continue to practise the teachings of the victorious buddhas
ང་ཁྱོད་མེད་པའི་སེམས་ཀྱིས་སྤྱོད་བྱེད་ན། །
nga khyö mepé sem kyi chö jé na
With a mind that is free from notions of ‘I’ or ‘you’,
དབྱིངས་ནས་སྲས་བཅས་རྒྱལ་བའི་བྱིན་མཐུ་ཡིས། །
ying né sé ché gyalwé jin tu yi
May the buddhas and their heirs grant their blessings and strength from basic space,
འབྲེལ་ཚད་དོན་དང་ལྡན་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
dreltsé dön dang denpar jingyi lob
So that all my connections may become meaningful!
ཀྱཻ་ཧོ་གྲོགས་དག་འཕགས་པའི་ཡུལ་ཞེས་པ། །
kyé ho drok dak pakpé yul zhepa
Kyeho! Friends, in the country known as the land of the āryas,
ཡང་དག་ཆོས་ཀྱི་འབྱུང་གནས་ནཱ་ལེནྡྲ། །
yangdak chö kyi jungné na lendra
At Nālandā, the source of authentic Dharma,
སྡེ་སྣོད་འཛིན་པ་འབུམ་གྱི་གཙུག་རྒྱན་དུ། །
denö dzinpa bum gyi tsukgyen du
The crown ornament of a hundred thousand piṭaka-holders
གྲགས་པའི་སློབ་དཔོན་དཔལ་ལྡན་ཆོས་སྐྱོང་ཡིན། །
drakpé lobpön palden chökyong yin
Was the renowned master Śrī Dharmapāla.2
གང་དེའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྐུ་ཡིས་མངོན་སུམ་དུ། །
gang dé yeshe ku yi ngönsum du
In his wisdom form he guided directly
རྗེས་སུ་བཟུང་བ་བརྩེ་ཆེན་ས་སྐྱ་པ། །
jesu zungwa tsé chen sakyapa
The great benevolent Sakya master,
རྗེ་བཙུན་མཆེད་སོགས་ལྟོས་བཅས་གདུལ་བྱ་ལ། །
jetsün ché sok tö ché dulja la
Who cared for his own disciples, including the reverend brothers,3
ལེགས་པར་སྩལ་བ་དགྱེས་རྡོར་རྩ་བའི་རྒྱུད། །
lekpar tsalwa gyé dor tsawé gyü
Perfectly transmitting the Hevajra root tantra.
འདི་ནི་དཔལ་ལྡན་ས་སྐྱའི་ལྟ་གྲུབ་དང་། །
di ni palden sakyé ta drub dang
As for this view and the tenets of the glorious Sakya,
ལམ་དུས་ཐུན་བཞིར་བསྒོམ་པའི་བསྐྱེད་རྫོགས་སོགས། །
lam dü tün zhir gompé kyedzok sok
As well as the generation and perfection cultivated in four sessions for the Time of the Path—4
བཤད་དང་སྒྲུབ་པ་ཀུན་གྱི་ཁུངས་ཡིན་པས། །
shé dang drubpa kün gyi khung yinpé
These are the source of all teaching and accomplishment.
སྲོག་གི་ཕྱིར་ཡང་འདོར་བར་མི་བྱའོ། །
sok gi chir yang dorwar mi ja o
Even at the cost of one’s life, therefore, they must never be forsaken.
བི་རཱུ་པ་ཡི་མན་ངག་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ། །
bi rupa yi mengak jizhin du
Studying this, the king of tantras,
རྗེ་བཙུན་མཆེད་ཀྱི་ལེགས་བཤད་ཚུལ་བཞི་ཡིས། །
jetsün ché kyi lek shetsul zhi yi
Through the fine explanations of the venerable brothers
རྒྱུད་རྒྱལ་འདི་ལ་སྦྱངས་པ་བྱས་པ་ན། །
gyü gyal di la jangpa jepa na
And according to Virūpa’s pith instructions,
བརྒྱ་ཕྲག་གཞུང་ལ་གཅིག་ཆར་སྦྱངས་པར་གྱུར། །
gyatrak zhung la chikchar jangpar gyur
Is akin to studying a hundred scriptures all at once.
ཡང་གཅིག་གསོན་དང་ཆོས་མཐུན་གྲོགས་པོ་དག །
yang chik sön dang chö tün drokpo dak
Listen again, my companions in the Dharma,
ཆུང་ངུའི་དུས་ནས་བླུན་པོའི་རྗེས་སྐྱེས་ན། །
chung ngü dü né lünpö jé kyé na
It must be true that someone who follows a fool from a young age
ཆོས་ལ་མོས་པ་མེད་པ་བདེན་དུ་ཆུག །
chö la möpa mepa den du chuk
Will lack trust in the Dharma.
མཁས་པའི་རྗེས་སུ་སྐྱེས་པ་འདི་ལ་དགོངས། །
khepé jesu kyepa di la gong
Consider this one who has followed the learned!
ད་ནི་མྱུར་དུ་བརྩོན་པ་མ་བྱས་ན། །
dani nyurdu tsönpa ma jé na
Now, unless you exert yourself swiftly,
རྒྱལ་བསྟན་ཉི་མ་ནུབ་ཀྱི་རི་ལ་ལྷུང་། །
gyalten nyima nub kyi ri la lhung
The sun of the Buddhist teachings will set beyond the western peaks,
བསྟན་འཛིན་སྐྱེས་བུའི་དམིགས་བུ་སྟོར་བ་ན། །
tendzin kyebü mik bu torwa na
And when the holders of the teachings, guides to beings, disappear,
ལམ་མིན་གཡང་སར་འཕྱན་པར་གྱུར་ཏ་རེ། །
lam min yangsar chenpar gyur taré
There will be a risk of straying onto false paths and falling into the abyss.
འཇིག་རྟེན་བྱ་བ་ཤི་ཡང་ཟིན་པ་མེད། །
jikten jawa shi yang zinpamé
There is no end to worldly activity, even in death.
ཟིན་མེད་མི་ཚེ་འདའ་བའི་ཚུལ་ལ་ལྟོས། །
zinmé mitsé dawé tsul la tö
Just look at how we spend our human lives relentlessly.
ཅིས་ཀྱང་དྲན་ན་གཞུང་བཟང་འདི་དག་ལ། །
chikyang dren na zhung zang didak la
However much you think about it, it is only reasonable
ཉིན་མཚན་གཡེང་བ་སྤངས་ཏེ་བརྩོན་པར་རིགས། །
nyintsen yengwa pang té tsönpar rik
That you cast aside distraction and apply yourself to these excellent works day and night.
སང་བྱ་གནང་བྱ་འདི་རྗེས་འདི་བྱེད་ཅེས། །
sangja nangja di jé di jé ché
‘I’ll do this tomorrow, that the day after, and after that, this.’—
འགྲུབ་མེད་ལས་ལ་ནམ་ཡང་ཟིན་པ་མེད། །
drubmé lé la namyang zinpamé
With such thoughts unproductive activity never ends.
དེ་བས་རང་དབང་རང་གིས་འཛིན་བྱས་ནས། །
dewé rangwang rang gi dzin jé né
Having taken control of your own agenda, then,
གཞུང་བཟང་འདི་ལ་སློབ་པར་མི་བྱེད་དམ། །
zhung zang di la lobpar mi jé dam
Will you not study this excellent scripture?
རང་གིས་རང་ཉིད་འཆོས་པར་མི་བྱེད་ན། །
rang gi rangnyi chöpar mi jé na
Unless you seek to bring about your own improvement,
ཕ་མ་ཡིན་ཀྱང་ཆོས་ལ་བསྐུལ་བ་མེད། །
pama yin kyang chö la kulwamé
Even your own parents could never bring you to the Dharma.
ཁྱད་པར་ལུང་གི་བསྟན་པ་ཉམས་དམས་པས། །
khyepar lung gi tenpa nyam mepé
And since the scriptural teachings are especially weak,
ཐོས་པའི་ཆོས་ལ་བསྐུལ་བ་སུ་ཡང་མེད། །
töpé chö la kulwa su yangmé
No one will encourage you to pursue Dharma study.
ཤིན་ཏུ་འཕྲད་དཀའ་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཐེག་པའི་ལམ། །
shintu tré ka dorjé tekpé lam
The path of the vajra vehicle is rarely encountered.
ཚིག་ཙམ་ཐོས་པས་བསྐལ་པར་བསགས་པའི་སྒྲིབ། །
tsik tsam töpé kalpar sakpé drib
Even hearing its words dispels age-old obscurations,
བ་མོ་ཉི་ཟེར་འཕྲད་བཞིན་དག་བྱེད་པའི། །
bamo nyizer tré zhin dak jepé
Just as the rays of the sun melt away the frost.
རྒྱུད་རྒྱལ་འདི་ལ་བརྩོན་པར་ཅིས་ཀྱང་བསྐུལ། །
gyü gyal di la tsönpar chikyang kul
Motivate yourself however you can and apply yourself to this king of tantras!
དེ་སྐད་འཕྲོས་འོས་མཆིད་ཀྱིས་གསོལ་བྱས་ཀྱང་། །
deké trö ö chi kyi sol jé kyang
You might suggest that what I have said deserves elaboration,
གསན་པར་བྱེད་པ་མེད་ན་བརྗོད་པས་ཅི། །
senpar jepamé na jöpé chi
But what would be the point of further remarks if no one is listening?
དེ་ལྟ་ནའང་རང་བློ་སྒྱུ་མེད་པས། །
deta na ang rang lo gyu mepé
Without betraying my own mind, therefore,
རང་གི་གནས་ཚུལ་ཙམ་ཞིག་ཞུས་པ་ལགས། །
rang gi netsul tsam zhik zhüpa lak
I offer this simply as an account of my own situation.
འདི་རུ་ལྷག་བསམ་དག་པས་བརྗོད་པའི་དགེས། །
diru lhaksam dakpé jöpé gé
Through the virtue of stating this with pure intention,
རྒྱལ་བསྟན་སྤྱི་དང་གཉིས་མེད་ཀྱེའི་རྡོ་རྗེའི། །
gyalten chi dang nyimé kyé dorjé
May the teaching and practice of Buddhadharma in general
བཤད་དང་སྒྲུབ་པས་འཇིག་རྟེན་སྣང་བྱས་ནས། །
shé dang drubpé jikten nang jé né
And of the non-dual Hevajra in particular illumine the world
ཕྱི་མའི་མུ་མཐར་རྟག་ཏུ་གནས་པར་ཤོག །
chimé mu tar taktu nepar shok
And continue evermore unto the most distant limits of time.
ཅེས་རང་གི་བསམ་པའི་ཚུལ་རྣམས་ཆོས་མཐུན་གྱི་གྲོགས་པོ་དག་ལ་ནང་ལུགས་སུ་ཞུས་པ་འདི་ཡང་གཞན་ཕན་སྣང་བས་བྲིས་པ་དགེ་ལེགས་སུ་གྱུར་ཅིག། །།
