The Summoning Hook of Wish-Fulfilment: An Appeal for Prosperity

ཆོས་དབྱིངས་ངང་ལས་དྲེགས་པའི་སྐུར་བཞེངས་ཏེ། །

chöying ngang lé drekpé kur zheng té

Arising in a ferocious form out of the state of dharmadhātu,

ཆོས་བཞིན་སྒྲུབ་པ་ཀུན་དང་ཁྱད་པར་དུ། །

chö zhin drubpa kün dang khyepardu

To protect all who practise according to the Dharma,

ཆོས་གྲྭའི་འཆད་ཉན་སྒྲིག་སོགས་སྲུང་མཛད་པ། །

chö dré chenyen drik sok sung dzepa

Especially those who teach and study in the Dharma college—

ཆོས་སྐྱོང་ཆེན་པོ་མ་གཡེལ་དེང་འདིར་དགོངས། །

chökyong chenpo ma yel dengdir gong

Great dharmapāla, do not forsake us, but look upon us here and now!

 

འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས་དངོས་བཞད་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཡིས། །

jampal yang ngö zhepé dorjé yi

Mañjughoṣa in person, Jamyang Zhepai Dorje,¹

དགོན་གནས་བཤད་སྒྲུབ་གཉེར་དུ་གཏད་པ་བཞིན། །

gönné shedrub nyer du tepa zhin

Entrusted you with responsibility for this monastery and study and practice—

དགེ་འདུན་འདུས་ཚོགས་འཆད་ཉན་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་ཀུན། །

gendün dü tsok chenyen longchö kün

Now aid us accordingly, so that the saṅgha assembly, education and resources

དབྱར་གྱི་མཚོ་བཞིན་རྒྱས་པའི་སྡོངས་གྲོགས་མཛོད། །

yar gyi tso zhin gyepé dong drok dzö

All expand and increase like a lake in summer!

 

རྣམ་སྨིན་ཡོན་ཏན་བརྒྱད་ཀྱི་ལུས་རྩལ་རྫོགས། །

nammin yönten gyé kyi lü tsal dzok

With bodies fully strengthened by the eight ripened qualities,²

ཐོས་བསམ་པདྨའི་ཚལ་ལ་དགའ་བས་རྩེན། །

tö sam pemé tsal la gawé tsen

They joyfully enter the lotus garden of listening and reflecting,

ལུང་རིགས་འདབ་མ་དབྱངས་སྙན་སྒྲོགས་པ་ཡི། །

lung rik dab ma yang nyen drokpa yi

And hum sweetly on the wings of scripture and reasoning—

རྐང་དྲུག་བགྲང་ཡས་འདུ་བའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

kang druk drang yé duwé cha yang tsol

Grant us prosperity so that countless bee-like students gather!

 

མཁས་བཙུན་ལྷག་བསམ་ཅན་གྱི་སློབ་དཔོན་དང་། །

khé tsün lhaksam chen gyi lobpön dang

A teacher who is learned, disciplined and altruistic in intention

དད་བརྩོན་ཤེས་རབ་ལྡན་པའི་སློབ་མ་གཉིས། །

dé tsön sherab denpé lobma nyi

And a student who is dedicated, diligent and intelligent—

རྟེན་འབྲེལ་ལྷན་ཅིག་འཛོམས་པས་འཆད་ཉན་གྱི། །

tendrel lhenchik dzompé chenyen gyi

Through the interdependent circumstances of their coming together,

རྒྱལ་མཚན་སྲིད་རྩེར་བསྒྲེངས་པའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

gyaltsen sitser drengpé cha yang tsol

Grant us the prosperity of raising study’s banner at the world’s very peak!

 

གཞུང་དོན་གདམས་པར་ཤར་བའི་གོ་བ་དང་། །

zhungdön dampar sharwé gowa dang

Understanding through which textual points become practical instructions,

ཚིག་དོན་ཕྲ་ཞིབ་འབྱེད་པ་རིགས་པའི་འཕྲུལ། །

tsikdön tra zhib jepa rikpé trul

The exercise of reasoning with a precise discernment of words and meaning,

ངེས་པ་སྐྱེད་བྱེད་རྒྱབ་རྟེན་ལུང་དང་བཅས། །

ngepa kyejé gyab ten lung dangché

And the generation of certainty with the full support of scriptural citation—

རྩོད་ངག་དགའ་སྟོན་འཕེལ་བའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

tsö ngak gatön pelwé cha yang tsol

Grant us the prosperity of expanding the feast of exchanges in debate!

 

དམ་ཆོས་འདུལ་བའི་དགོངས་དོན་འདུས་པའི་ཁྲིམས། །

damchö dulwé gongdön düpé trim

The rules of the assembly are the intent of the sacred Dharma of the Vinaya,

ལས་འབྲས་དྲང་ཐིག་འདེབས་པའི་ལས་བྱེད་པ། །

lé dré drang tik debpé lejepa

Behaving correctly and forging a straight path between action and effect,

ཚར་གཅོད་རྗེས་འཛིན་རྟིང་གནོན་མི་ཡོལ་བའི། །

tsarchö jedzin ting nön mi yolwé

Without lapsing into the supplementary conduct of elimination and guidance—

བཅའ་ཁྲིམས་རྨང་གཞི་བརྟན་པོའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

cha trim mang zhi tenpö cha yang tsol

Grant us the prosperity of a stable foundation based on disciplinary codes!

 

ངན་ཤེད་བྲག་ལ་འཆའ་བའི་འུག་པ་དང་། །

ngen shé drak la chawé ukpa dang

To shine upon the owl who is stationed upon the rock of improper habit

བླང་དོར་ལམ་དུ་རྒྱུ་བའི་ཤན་འབྱེད་པ། །

langdor lam du gyuwé shenjepa

And so that we might discern the paths to be taken and to be avoided,

ལས་འབྲས་བདེན་པའི་ཉི་མ་འོད་པོ་ཆེའི། །

lé dré denpé nyima öpo ché

Grant us the prosperity of revealing the great light in all its splendour,

སྣང་བ་མངོན་དུ་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

nangwa ngön du gyurwé cha yang tsol

The brilliant sun that is the reality of actions and their effects!

 

སྡིག་སྤྱོད་རྒྱན་དུ་ངོམས་པ་ལོག་པའི་གཏམ། །

dik chö gyen du ngompa lokpé tam

Without flaunting unwholesome conduct, speaking erroneously,

ཕྱོགས་ལྷུང་ཙམ་གྱིས་བསྔགས་པའི་མུ་ཅོར་སོགས། །

choklhung tsam gyi ngakpé mu chor sok

Or audaciously lavishing praise based on mere bias, and the like—

མ་ཡིན་ཆོས་ཀྱི་གྲགས་པ་ཆོས་བཞིན་དུ། །

mayin chö kyi drakpa chö zhindu

Grant us the prosperity of enhancing the Dharma’s reputation

བསྒྲགས་བྱས་སྙན་པས་ཀུན་ཁྱབ་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

drak jé nyenpé künkhyab cha yang tsol

Universally through statements that accord with the Dharma!

 

བསོད་ནམས་ཞིང་གི་མཆོག་གྱུར་དགེ་འདུན་དང་། །

sönam zhing gi chokgyur gendün dang

The saṅgha is the supreme field of merit,

བསོད་ནམས་དད་གཏོང་འཛོམས་པ་སྦྱིན་པའི་བདག །

sönam dé tong dzompa jinpé dak

And the devoted, generous patron gains merit,

བསོད་ནམས་སྡིག་དང་མ་འདྲེས་རྒྱུ་སྦྱོར་གྱིས། །

sönam dik dang ma dré gyujor gyi

Through meritorious gifts, unassociated with misdeeds,

བསོད་ནམས་དུས་སྟོན་དར་བའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

sönam dü tön darwé cha yang tsol

Grant us the prosperity of developing festivals of merit!

 

མངོན་འདོད་ཚང་བའི་བློ་ཡི་གཡོ་བ་ལས། །

ngön dö tsangwé lo yi yowa lé

Not through a mind that is filled with selfish desire,

བྱུང་མིན་བཤད་སྒྲུབ་བསྟན་པ་གནས་གྱུར་ན། །

jung min shedrub tenpa né gyur na

But so that study and practice of the teachings may endure,

ངང་གིས་འདུ་བ་སྲུང་མའི་འཕྲིན་ལས་ཀྱིས། །

ngang gi duwa sungmé trinlé kyi

Spontaneously, through the activity of the guardians,

ཕུན་ཚོགས་དཔལ་འབྱོར་རྒྱས་པའི་ཕྱྭ་གཡང་སྩོལ། །

püntsok paljor gyepé cha yang tsol

Grant us the prosperity of increasing property and resources!

 

ཁྱད་པར་བློ་གསལ་དོན་གཉེར་ཚུལ་མཐུན་རྣམས། །

khyepar losal dönnyer tsul tün nam

In particular, so that those who are bright, responsible and ethical

ནད་རིམས་གདོན་བགེགས་རྐྱེན་གྱིས་མི་བརྫི་བར། །

né rim dön gek kyen gyi mi dziwar

May remain unperturbed by disease, harmful influences and adversity,

ཐོས་བསམ་བྱ་བ་བདེ་བླག་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཏེ། །

tö sam jawa delak tarchin té

And easily complete the activities related to study and reflection,

དོན་གཉིས་སྨོན་པ་བཞིན་དུ་འགྲུབ་པར་མཛོད། །

dön nyi mönpa zhindu drubpar dzö

Ensure that the twofold aim may be accomplished just as we wish!

 

མདོར་ན་མི་འདོད་ཉེར་འཚེ་ཀུན་དང་བྲལ། །

dorna mindö nyertsé kün dangdral

In short, may we avoid all that is undesirable and harmful,

ཕུན་ཚོགས་ལེགས་བྱས་མ་ལུས་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ། །

püntsok lek jé malü lhün gyi drub

May all that is magnificent be spontaneously accomplished,

རྒྱལ་བསྟན་ནོར་བུ་རྒྱལ་མཚན་རྩེར་མཆོད་པས། །

gyalten norbu gyaltsen tser chöpé

And by honouring the jewel of the teachings atop the banner of victory,

སྣང་སྲིད་དགེ་ལེགས་སྣང་བས་ཁྱབ་གྱུར་ཅིག །

nangsi gelek nangwé khyab gyur chik

May the light of virtue and excellence pervade appearance and existence!

 

བསོད་ནམས་དར་རྒྱས་རི་རྒྱལ་ལྷུན་པོ་བཞིན། །

sönam dargyé ri gyal lhünpo zhin

May merit increase and grow like Sumeru, king of mountains,

སྙན་གྲགས་ཆེན་པོ་ནམ་མཁའ་བཞིན་དུ་ཁྱབ། །

nyendrak chenpo namkha zhindu khyab

May fame and glory spread as pervasively as the sky itself,

ཚེ་རིང་ནད་མེད་གཞན་དོན་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ། །

tsering nemé zhendön lhün gyi drub

May long-life, good health and others’ welfare be spontaneously accomplished,

ཡོན་ཏན་རྒྱ་མཚོ་མཆོག་གི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག །

yönten gyatso chok gi tashi shok

And may all be auspicious so that we gain a great ocean of qualities!

 

ཅེས་པ་འདི་ནི་ཐོས་བསམ་གླིང་གི་སྤྱི་གཉེར་དད་བརྩོན་ལྡན་པ་རབ་འབྱམས་པ་བློ་བཟང་དཔལ་ལྡན་གྱིས་གྲྭ་ཚང་གི་ལས་དོན་དང་འབྲེལ་བའི་གཡང་འབོད་བྱ་ཚུལ་རྒྱལ་གསོལ་གྱི་མཇུག་ཏུ་འདོན་རྒྱུ་ཞིག་དགོས་ཚུལ་ཟེར་བར་དགེ་འདུན་སྤྱིའི་གཡང་འབོད་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་རྣམ་པར་དག་པ་དང་། སྒོས་སུ་མཚན་ཉིད་གྲྭ་ཚང་གི་གཡང་འབོད་བཀའ་པོད་ལྔའི་འཆད་ཉན། སྔགས་གྲྭ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་གཡང་འབོད་རྒྱུད་རིམ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་བཤད་སྒྲུབ། འདོན་ཕྱག་ལེན་སོགས་ཡིན་གྱི། གཡང་མགྲོན་པོ་འབོད་པ་བཞིན་བྱེད་པ་དཀའ་ནའང་། རང་རང་གི་རྒྱུ་བསྒྲུབས་པའི་ཐོག་ཏུ་རྐྱེན་སྲུང་མའི་ཐུགས་རྒྱུད་བསྐུལ་ན་ཕན་པར་བསམས་ཏེ། ༧བཙུན་པ་དཀོན་མཆོག་བསྟན་པའི་སྒྲོན་མེས་བྲིས་པའོ།། །།

Rabjampa Lobzang Palden, the dedicated and diligent caretaker of Tösam Ling requested an appeal for prosperity related to the affairs of the monastic college, which could be recited at the conclusion of the protectors’ practice. A general prosperity appeal for pure discipline, as well as particular prosperity appeals for the study of the five major scriptures in the philosophy college and the study and practice of the two stages of tantra in the mantra college are recitations, and it is difficult for the invited guests to act in accordance with these requests, but I thought it would still be beneficial to invoke the wisdom-minds of the guardians as a condition for the accomplishment of each particular aim. Thus, this was written by the monk Könchok Tenpai Drönme.
