Factors for Confessing Negative Actions1

by Longchen Rabjam (extracted by Khenchen Ngawang Palzang)

The following contains all the factors for confessing negative actions:

lama dorjé dzinpa chenpo lasokpa chok chu na zhukpé sangye dang changchub sempa tamché dak la gong su sol

Buddhas and bodhisattvas dwelling in the ten directions, including my own Vajradhara guru,2 I pray that you hold me in your mind!

dak ming di zhé gyiwé tsé khorwa tokma machipa né danta la tuk gi bardu nyönmongpa döchak dang zhedang dang timuk gi wang gi lü ngak yi sum gyi goné dikpa migewa chu gyipa dang

I, (insert name), through beginningless saṃsāra until now, under the influence of the afflictions of desire, hostility, and delusion, have, with my body, speech, and mind, committed the negativities of the ten non-virtues.

tsammepa nga gyipa dang dé dang nyewa nga gyipa dang

I have committed the five immediate downfalls and the five barely mediated crimes.

soso tarpé dompa dang galwa dang

I have contradicted the vows of individual liberation.

changchub sempé labpa dang galwa dang

I have gone against the trainings of a bodhisattva.

sang ngak kyi damtsik dang galwa dang

I have broken the samayas of Secret Mantra.

pa dang ma la magüpa dang

I have been disrespectful to my father and mother.

khenpo dang lobpön la magüpa dang

I have been disrespectful to my upādhyāyas and ācāryas.3

I have been disrespectful to friends who uphold celibacy.4

I have done things that harm the Three Jewels.

I have turned my back on the holy Dharma.

pakpé gendün la kurpa tabpa dang

I have slandered the noble saṅgha.

semchen la nöpé lé gyipa lasokpa dikpa migewé tsokdak gi gyipa dang gyi du tsalwa dang zhen gyi gyipa la jesu yirangwa lasokpa

I have harmed sentient beings. I have committed the whole range of non-virtuous negativities; I have incited others to commit them; and I have rejoiced when others did so.

dorna tori dang tarpé gek su gyur ching khorwa dang ngensong gi gyur gyurpé nyetung gi tsok chichi pa tamché lama dorjé dzinpa chenpo lasokpa chok chu na zhukpé sangye dang changchub sempa tamché kyi chen ngar tol lo shak so

In short, all my accumulated faults and downfalls, which have become impediments to higher states and liberation and the cause of more saṃsāra and lower states—these I acknowledge and confess in the presence of all the buddhas and bodhisattvas dwelling in the ten directions, including my Vajradhara guru.

mi chabwo mi bé do chinché dompar gyi lak so

I do not hide them. I do not cover them up. From now on, I will hold myself back.

If I acknowledge and confess them, I will come to dwell in happiness.

If I do not acknowledge and confess them, I will not.

Notes

  1. These standard verses of confession—the component elements of which are found all over Tibetan literature—seem to have been arranged by Longchenpa in his Stages of Taking the Unsurpassable Secret as the Path (gsang ba bla na med pa'i chos spyod lam khyer rim pa), and extracted for use by Khenchen Ngawang Palzang, whose students then included it in his Collected Works under the title "Factors for Confessing Negative Actions" (sdig pa bshags pa'i yan lag).
  2. bla ma rdo rje 'dzin pa. An alternate of rdo rje 'chang, Vajradhara, often used as an honorific for one's root guru.
  3. mkhan po and slob dpon—Most generally, khenpo (mkhan po) denotes a learned monastic professor, but in the narrower sense, it is equivalent to the Sanskrit upadhyāya—one who transmits religious vows, particularly those of the fundamental vehicle. Similarly ācārya (slob dpon) most generally means a master of a given field. In the narrower sense relevant here, however, it means a master qualified to transmit vows and samayas, particularly those related to Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna.
  4. tshangs par mtshungs par spyod pa; Skt. brahmacārin—"Observing pure conduct." This usually connotes celibacy/chastity.
