Instruction on Ultimate Point of Mind

An Instruction on the Ultimate Point of Mind[1]

by Mipham Rinpoche

I bow before the Mañjughoṣa Guru, the unmatched protector.

Listen well, friends with unfeigned intention,[2]
As I explain three crucial points of the unexcelled path.

Rest serenely in an experience of unaltered mind;
Rely on basic mindfulness, undistracted therefrom.
When the children pray with unadulterated faith
To the line of vidyādharas, the unrivalled fathers,
Their hearts are pierced by unparalleled blessings
Of the ultimate realization of the unborn sphere.

As you take to heart the undescribable condition
In the naked directness of the unfabricated mind,
And there dawns meditation of undoubting confidence,
You have mastered awareness of the unobscured nature.
No matter what thoughts arise as its unrestricted expression,
In a state of awareness—unsuppressed, uncultivated—
The adornments are all that arises as undirected play,
And there is meditation in what is unpractised, effortless.
When this becomes an unbroken experience,
Luminosity by day and night, an unceasing cycle,
Delusory appearances of saṃsāra, ungrasped, fade.
A la la! How crazy this, the unfixating mind!

Darkness is dispelled when seeing unmistaken reality;
The light of wisdom expands in its unlimited scope;
And you are constantly cheered by unchanging bliss.
You feel the natural incandescence of unbounded compassion
Towards sentient beings subjected to unnecessary sorrow.
All the riches of the victorious ones of unending splendour
Appear in the palm of your hand with unforced spontaneity.
Without halting the waves of the ocean, unstoppable mind,
Primordial wisdom dawns in uncompelled naturalness.
This is a special feature of this, the unstrenuous path.

Through this dharma bequest of the undying Padma
And his lineage heirs, a legacy of unequalled love,
The fortunate beneficiaries of unrepayable kindness
Will ascend the precious stairway of the unwearying path
And thereby, swiftly and easily in an untroubled manner,
Reach the supreme destination of the unsurpassable state.
A la la ho!

Notes

  1. The title of this text, sems don gdams ngag in Tibetan, is difficult to translate. It could also be understood as “instruction on mind in actuality”, “instruction on the theme of mind” or “instruction on mind’s [true] meaning/signficance.”  ↩

  2. Every line of Mipham’s text has the negating term med as its third syllable. This effect is replicated in the English translation by adjectives with the prefix un– in the penultimate position of each line.  ↩

  3. Corresponding to 22 March 1890.  ↩
