Song of Devotion

A Prayer to Lord Marpa Lotsāwa

རྗེ་དུས་གསུམ་སངས་རྒྱས་འདུས་པའི་དངོས། །

jé dü sum sangye düpé ngö

Precious lord, true embodiment of the buddhas of the three times,

དཔལ་དགྱེས་མཛད་རྡོ་རྗེའི་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ། །

pal gyé dzé dorjé trulpé ku

Glorious Hevajra in a body of manifestation—

རྗེ་མར་པ་ལོ་ཙཱར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

jé marpa lo tsar solwa deb

Precious lord Marpa Lotsāwa, to you I pray:

བུ་ང་ལ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

bu nga la jingyi lab tu sol

Inspire me, a devoted child, with your blessings.

 

མགོན་བཀའ་བཞི་བརྒྱུད་པའི་སྤྱི་མེས་ཆེ། །

gön ka zhi gyüpé chimé ché

Great forefather of the lineage of the four transmissions,¹

ཆོས་སྣང་སེམས་ཀུན་ལ་རང་དབང་བསྒྱུར། །

chö nang sem kün la rangwang gyur

With mastery over all aspects of mind and phenomena,

དཔལ་གྲུབ་རིགས་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་དེད་དཔོན་ཆེ། །

pal drub rik gyatsö depön ché

Great leader guiding an ocean of glorious adepts,

མགོན་ལྷོ་བྲག་པ་དེ་སྙིང་དབུས་དྲན། །

gön lhodrakpa dé nying ü dren

Lord of Lhodrak, I recall you in the depths of my heart.

 

རྗེ་འཕགས་པའི་ཡུལ་དུ་ལན་བདུན་བྱོན། །

jé pakpé yul du len dün jön

Precious lord, seven times you travelled to the noble land of India,

དཔལ་ནཱ་རོ་མི་ཏྲིའི་གདམས་མཛོད་ཀྱིས། །

pal naro mitri dam dzö kyi

And with a treasury of instructions from glorious Nāro and Maitrī,

ཕ་འགྲོ་བའི་བླ་མའི་ཐུགས་རྒྱུད་ཚིམ། །

pa drowé lamé tukgyü tsim

You, father and guru to all beings, satisfied your wisdom mind.

 

ཆོས་ཟབ་མོ་གསང་སྔགས་ཐེག་པ་ཡི། །

chö zabmo sang ngak tekpa yi

You distributed this treasure trove of precious jewels,

ནོར་རཏྣའི་གཏེར་ཁ་གྲམ་བུར་བརྡལ། །

nor ratné terkha dram bur dal

Profound Dharma from the secret mantra vehicle,

ཕ་ཁྱེད་ལས་འཁྲུངས་པའི་ཐུགས་ཀྱི་སྲས། །

pa khyé lé trungpé tuk kyi sé

And became a father to your heart-born son—

རྗེ་མི་ལ་ཞེས་པ་མཚན་ཙམ་གྱིས། །

jé mila zhepa tsen tsam gyi

Jé Mila, whose name alone serves

ངན་སོང་གི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཞི་མཛད་ཅིང་། །

ngensong gi dukngal zhidzé ching

To assuage the sufferings of the lower realms,

བྷོ་ཏྲ་ཡི་གྲུབ་པ་ཀུན་གྱི་རྒྱན། །

bhotra yi drubpa kün gyi gyen

The crowning ornament of all the adepts of Bhoṭa.²

 

སྐྱབས་མཐར་ཐུག་ཡིད་བཞིན་ནོར་འདྲའི་སྐུ། །

kyab tartuk yizhin nor dré ku

Ultimate refuge, whose form is like a wish-granting gem,

གནས་གྲོ་བོ་ལུང་གི་དགོན་པ་དང་། །

né drowo lung gi gönpa dang

In places such as the hermitage of Trowo valley

དཔལ་སྲས་མཁར་སྤྲུལ་པའི་ལྷ་ཁང་ན། །

pal sékhar trulpé lhakhang na

And the manifest temple at glorious Sekhar,

རྗེ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཧེ་རུ་ཀ །

jé chö kyi wangchuk heruka

You are the precious lord of Dharma, the heruka,

དཔལ་བདག་མེད་མ་དང་དགྱེས་རོལ་བཞུགས། །

pal dakmema dang gyé rol zhuk

Who dwells in delight with Nairātmyā.³

ཆོས་ངེས་གསང་གི་རྒྱུད་སྡེ་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཡིས། །

chö ngé sang gi gyüdé gyatso yi

And who, with oceanic tantras of definitive secret Dharma,

བུ་སྐལ་བཟང་སློབ་ཚོགས་སྨིན་གྲོལ་མཛད། །

bu kalzang lob tsok mindrol dzé

Matured and liberated hosts of fortunate disciple-children.

 

རྗེ་མི་ཡི་ལུས་ལ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐུགས། །

jé mi yi lü la sangye tuk

Precious lord who has a buddha’s mind in a human body,

མགོན་སྲས་བཅས་རྒྱལ་བའི་ཕྲིན་ལས་མཛད། །

gön sé ché gyalwé trinlé dzé

With your heirs, you carried out the victorious ones’ activity.

དུས་ད་ལྟ་བཞུགས་ན་དགའ་བ་ལ། །

dü danta zhuk na gawa la

If only you were here right now, how happy I would be!

མགོན་ཁྱོད་ཞལ་མཇལ་བའི་སྐལ་བས་དབེན། །

gön khyö zhal jalwé kalwé wen

But I am bereft, O protector, with no chance to see your face—

བུ་ལས་ངན་སྒྲིབ་པའི་ཉེས་པར་ཟད། །

bu lé ngen dribpé nyepar zé

A child of evil karma mired in the fault of obscurations.

 

ཕ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབྱིངས་ན་བཞུགས་བཞིན་དུ། །

pa chö kyi ying na zhuk zhindu

O Father, as you dwell in the dharmadhātu,

གཟུགས་ལོངས་སྤྲུལ་གྱི་རོལ་པ་རྒྱུན་མི་ཆད། །

zuk long trul gyi rolpa gyün mi ché

The play of nirmāṇakāya and sambhogakāya forms continues,

འཁོར་དག་དང་མ་དག་མཐའ་ཀླས་རྣམས། །

khor dak dang ma dak talé nam

Leading infinite assemblies, pure and impure,

འབྲས་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཆེན་པོའི་ས་ལ་འགོད། །

dré changchub chenpö sa la gö

To the fruitional state of great awakening.

 

རྗེ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཕྲིན་ལས་མཁའ་ལྟར་ཁྱབ། །

jé khyö kyi trinlé kha tar khyab

Precious lord, your activity is as pervasive as space itself.

བོད་མུན་པའི་རྒྱལ་ཁམས་དཀར་པོར་གཏོང་། །

bö münpé gyalkham karpor tong

You brought the light of purity to the benighted land of Tibet.

སྔགས་རིག་འཛིན་གྲུབ་པ་བསམ་ལས་འདས། །

ngak rigdzin drubpa sam lé dé

And with innumerable mantra adepts and vidyādharas

དཔལ་སྒྲུབ་བརྒྱུད་བསྟན་པས་འཛམ་གླིང་ཁྱབ། །

pal drubgyü tenpé dzamling khyab

Spread the teachings of the glorious practice lineage throughout the world.

མགོན་ཁྱོད་འདྲའི་རྣམ་ཐར་གཞན་ལ་མེད། །

gön khyö dré namtar zhen lamé

O protector, no other life of liberation can compare to yours.

 

དཔལ་ས་ར་ཧ་དང་དབྱེར་མེད་པའི། །

pal sara ha dang yermé pé

You who are inseparable from glorious Saraha,

ཕ་ལོ་ཙཱ་ཆེན་པོའི་བཀའ་དྲིན་དྲན། །

pa lo tsa chenpö kadrin dren

Great father translator, I recall your kindness.

ས་བཅུ་གསུམ་རྩེ་མོར་རབ་ཕྱིན་པའི། །

sa chusum tsemor rab chinpé

You who reached the peak of the thirteen stages,

དཔལ་ཡན་ལག་བདུན་ལྡན་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་། །

pal yenlak dünden dorjé chang

Glorious Vajradhara with the seven aspects of union,

སྐུ་ཐ་མལ་གྱི་རྣམ་པར་རབ་བསྟན་པ། །

ku tamal gyi nampar rab tenpa

Who manifested perfectly in an ordinary form,

རྗེ་ལྷོ་བྲག་ཆེན་པོར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

jé lho drak chenpor solwa deb

Great lord of Lhodrak, to you I pray.

 

སྐུ་ཉི་མ་བརྒྱ་པའི་གཟི་བརྗིད་དང་། །

ku nyima gyapé ziji dang

Your body has the majestic splendour of a hundred suns,

གསུང་ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྒྲ་དབྱངས་འུ་རུ་རུ། །

sung chö kyi drayang u ru ru

Your speech resounds with the melodious tones of Dharma,

ཐུགས་ཟབ་ཞི་བདེ་སྟོང་འོད་གསལ་ཆེ། །

tuk zab zhi dé tong ösal ché

And your mind is profound peace, bliss-emptiness, great luminosity—

ཕ་གསང་གསུམ་གྱི་བྱིན་རླབས་མཚུངས་ཟླ་བྲལ། །

pa sang sum gyi jinlab tsungda dral

O Father, the blessings of your three secrets are beyond compare.

 

བདག་མོས་གུས་ཀྱི་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་ནུས་ན། །

dak mögü kyi solwa deb nü na

If I can supplicate you with devotion,

རྗེས་ཐུགས་ཀྱི་ངེས་པར་མི་གཏོང་སྙམ། །

jé tuk kyi ngepar mi tong nyam

I trust that you, precious lord, will not fail me.

བུ་བདག་ལ་བྱིན་རླབས་ཀྱི་ཕ་ཕོག་དེ། །

bu dak la jinlab kyi pa pok dé

Now is the time for patrimonial blessings

དུས་ད་ལྟ་ཉིད་དུ་སྩོལ་རེ་རན། །

dü danta nyi du tsol ré ren

To be imparted to me, child that I am.

 

བློ་དྲེད་པོ་ཐར་པའི་ལམ་ལ་བསྒྱུར། །

lo drepo tarpé lam la gyur

Turn this stubborn mind of mine toward the path of liberation;

སྣང་བདེན་འཛིན་དྲྭ་བ་ཧྲུལ་པོ་བཤིག །

nang dendzin drawa hrulpo shik

Tear apart the web of clinging to appearances as real;

ཆོས་གཟུང་འཛིན་གྱི་སྤྲོས་པ་དབྱིངས་སུ་ཞི། །

chö zungdzin gyi tröpa ying su zhi

Let the constructs of dualistic perception cease within basic space;

སེམས་རིག་པ་སྐྱེ་མེད་འོད་གསལ་དེ། །

sem rigpa kyemé ösal dé

Allow me to sustain, at all times without interruption

དུས་རྒྱུན་ཆད་མེད་པར་རྟག་ཏུ་བསྐྱངས། །

dü gyünché mepar taktu kyang

The clear light of mind’s own unborn awareness;

ང་ཚོགས་དྲུག་གི་སྣང་བ་རང་སར་གྲོལ། །

nga tsok druk gi nangwa rang sar drol

Cause all sensory perceptions to be freed, just as they are;

རྗེ་ཁྱོད་དང་དགོངས་པ་མཉམ་པར་ཤོག །

jé khyö dang gongpa nyampar shok

And make me your equal, O precious lord, in wisdom intent.

 

ཅེས་པའང་རིས་མེད་པའི་བསྟན་པ་ཀུན་ལ་དག་པའི་སྣང་བ་རབ་ཏུ་རྒྱས་པ་༧ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་ལྕགས་འབྲུག་ཐ་སྐར་ཟླ་བའི་ཚེས་ ༡༩ ནུབ་རྗེ་ལྷོ་བྲག་པ་ལ་མོས་གུས་བཟོད་མེད་འབར་བ་དང་། གསོལ་འདེབས་ཚིག་ཐོ་རེ་ཡིད་ལ་ཤར་ཡང་ཡི་གེར་བཀོད་པ་མ་བྱུང་བ། ཚེས་ ༢༠ ལ་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་ཅིང་ཡི་གེར་བྲིས་པ་འདིས་ཀྱང་ལོ་ཙཱ་ཆེན་པོའི་བྱིན་རླབས་སྙིང་ལ་འཇུག་པའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་ཅིག །མངྒ་ལཾ། གོང་གི་ཚེས་ ༡༩ ནུབ་ལོ་ཙཱ་ཆེན་པོའི་སྐུ་དཀར་ཆས་ཅན་ཧ་ཅང་མི་བསྒྲེས་པ་དབུ་སྐྲ་སོགས་དེང་སང་གི་བྲི་རྒྱུན་ལྟར་སེམས་སྣང་ལ་མཇལ་བར་མོས་གུས་ཚད་མེད་བྱས་པའོ།། །།

When Chökyi Lodrö, who has a well-developed purity of perception towards all teachings without sectarian bias, felt an unbearable surge of devotion for the precious Lord of Lhodrak on the evening of the 19th of the Aśvinī [i.e., ninth] month of the Iron Dragon year, some words of prayer came to mind, but he did not commit them to writing. He prayed again on the 20th and wrote down these words. May they become a cause for the blessings of the great lotsāwa to enter the heart. Maṅgalam. On the evening of the 19th referred to above, a visionary encounter with the great lotsāwa, who was dressed in white and whose hair and so on were just as depicted in modern traditions of portraiture, inspired a devotion without bounds.
