A Prayer to Tsarchen Dorje Chang

Emaho!

སངས་རྒྱས་ཀུན་གྱི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་གཅིག་བསྡུས་པ།    །

sangye kün gyi tukjé chik dü pa

Embodiment of all the buddhas’ compassion,

རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་དངོས་ཚར་པ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྗེ།    །

dorjé chang ngö tsarpa chökyi jé

Vajradhara in person, Tsarpa Lord of Dharma,

སྙིང་དབུས་པད་དཀར་བཞད་པའི་རྩེར་མཆོད་དེ།    །

nying ü pekar zhepé tser chö dé

I offer you the blossoming white lotus of my heart

མི་ཕྱེད་སྙིང་ནས་གུས་པས་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

miché nying né güpé solwa deb

And pray to you with unshakeable, heartfelt devotion.

 

གངས་ཅན་མཁས་དང་གྲུབ་པའི་གཙུག་གི་རྒྱན།    །

gangchen khé dang drubpé tsuk gi gyen

The crown adornment of all the Snowy Land’s scholars and adepts

བིར་ཝའི་ཞལ་གྱི་གདམས་པ་ས་སྐྱ་པ། །

birwé zhal gyi dampa sakyapa

Was Virūpa, whose teachings passed to the noble Sakya patriarchs

རྗེ་བཙུན་གོང་མའི་སྙན་བརྒྱུད་སློབ་བཤད་ཀྱི།    །

jetsün gongmé nyengyü lobshé kyi

In an aural lineage of private instruction.

ཟབ་དོན་བདུད་རྩིས་མྱོས་པའི་ཚར་པ་རྗེ།    །

zab dön dütsi nyöpé tsarpa jé

Lord Tsarpa, who imbibed this nectar of profound meaning,

ཕ་རྒོད་བློ་གསལ་རྒྱ་མཚོར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

pa gö losal gyatsor solwa deb

Heroic father Losal Gyatso, to you I pray.

 

ནཱ་རོ་པ་དང་བྲམ་ཟེ་མཆོག་སྲེད་དང་།    །

naropa dang dramzé chok sé dang

Master of the one-to-one transmission of Golden Dharmas

རྭ་ཆེན་འབྲོག་མི་ལ་སོགས་ལེགས་བརྒྱུད་པའི།    །

ra chen drok mi lasok lek gyüpé

Of yidam deities, ḍākinīs, dharma guardians and the like,

ཡི་དམ་ཌཱ་ཀི་ཆོས་སྐྱོང་ལ་སོགས་པའི།    །

yidam daki chökyong lasokpé

Which was passed from Nāropa and the brahmin Vararuci,

གསེར་ཆོས་ཆིག་བརྒྱུད་བདག་པོར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

ser chö chik gyü dakpor solwa deb

Down through the great Ra, Drokmi and others—to you I pray.

 

བསླབ་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་དག་པས་ཡིད་འཕྲོག་ཅིང་།    །

labpé tsultrim dakpé yitrok ching

You captivated minds with the purity of your ethical training,

ཏིང་འཛིན་སྒོ་བརྒྱར་འཇུག་ལྡང་ཐོགས་པ་མེད།    །

tingdzin go gyar juk dang tokpamé

Were unimpeded as you entered and rose from a hundred samādhis,

ཤེས་རབ་གསུམ་གྱི་གཏེར་ཆེན་འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས།    །

sherab sum gyi terchen jampé yang

And in the great treasury of your threefold wisdom, you were Mañjughoṣa in person—

དཔལ་ལྡན་བླ་མ་མཆོག་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

palden lama chok la solwa deb

Glorious and supreme guru, to you I pray.

 

འཆད་མཁས་བློ་ལྡན་བྱེ་བའི་ཡི་ག་འགུགས།    །

ché khé loden jewé yi ga guk

Skilled in exposition, you attracted myriads of brilliant minds,

རྩོད་པས་ཕས་རྒོལ་བྲག་རི་ཕྱེ་མར་འཐག  །

tsöpé pé gol drakri chemar tak

In debate you crushed the mountain of your adversaries to dust,

རྩོམ་པས་ཐུབ་བསྟན་ལྷུན་པོ་གསལ་བར་བྱེད།    །

tsompé tubten lhünpo salwar jé

And through composition illuminated the peak of Buddha’s teachings—

མཁྱེན་རབ་ཕ་མཐའ་ཡས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

khyen rab pata yé la solwa deb

To you whose perfect wisdom was unbounded, I pray.

 

བརྩེ་བ་ཆེན་པོས་གཞན་དོན་འབའ་ཞིག་སྤྱོད།    །

tsewa chenpö zhendön bazhik chö

In your vast love, you acted only for the welfare of others;

མཐུ་སྟོབས་ནུས་པས་བདུད་སྡེ་ཕྱེ་མར་འཐག  །

tutob nüpé dü dé chemar tak

With your power and strength, you crushed Māra’s hordes.

ཡི་དམ་ལྷ་ཡི་དགྱེས་ཞལ་རྟག་ཏུ་མཇལ།    །

yidam lha yi gyé zhal taktu jal

You constantly beheld the delighted faces of the yidam deities.

བསྙེན་སྒྲུབ་རྟགས་ཚད་མངོན་གྱུར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

nyendrub tak tsé ngöngyur solwa deb

And actualized all the signs of approach and accomplishment—to you I pray.

 

བསྐྱེད་པའི་རིམ་པས་ཅིར་སྣང་ལྷ་སྐུར་ཤར།    །

kyepé rimpé chir nang lha kur shar

Through the generation phase, all appearances arose in the form of the deity,

རྫོགས་པའི་རིམ་པས་རླུང་ཐིག་འགྲོས་རྣམས་ཐིམ།    །

dzokpé rimpé lung tik drö nam tim

And through the perfection phase, the motions of winds and essences dissolved.

སྒྲིབ་གསུམ་བག་ཆགས་དང་བཅས་སྤངས་པ་དང་།    །

drib sum bakchak dangché pangpa dang

You overcame the three obscurations together with their habitual traces,

ས་ལམ་ཡོན་ཏན་རྫོགས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།    །

salam yönten dzok la solwa deb

And perfected the qualities of the paths and stages—to you I pray.

 

སྙིགས་དུས་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན་པ་ཀུན་གྱི་རྒྱལ།    །

nyikdü dorjé dzinpa kün gyi gyal

King of all the vajra-holders of this degenerate age,

རྡོ་རྗེའི་བླ་མ་དྲན་ཆོག་ཚར་པ་རྗེར།    །

dorjé lama dren chok tsarpa jer

Vajra guru, the thought of whom is sufficient, Lord Tsarpa—

མི་ཕྱེད་གུས་པས་རྟག་ཏུ་གསོལ་འདེབས་ན།    །

miché güpé taktu soldeb na

As I supplicate you, constantly with unshakeable devotion,

བྱིན་རླབས་དབང་ཆེན་ད་ལྟ་བསྐུར་དུ་གསོལ།    །

jinlab wangchen danta kur du sol

Bestow a mighty river of blessings here and now, I pray.

 

རིག་སྟོང་ཆོས་ཉིད་མངོན་སུམ་རྟོགས་པ་དང་།    །

riktong chönyi ngönsum tokpa dang

Cause me to realize the nature of awareness-emptiness directly,

འགྲོས་བཞི་ཐིམ་ནས་སྐུ་བཞི་མངོན་དུ་བྱས།    །

drö zhi tim né ku zhi ngön du jé

Dissolve the fourfold motion and actualize the four kāyas,

རང་གཞན་དོན་གཉིས་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ་པ་ཡི།    །

rangzhen dön nyi lhün gyi drubpa yi

Spontaneously accomplish my own and others’ aims,

ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཁྱོད་དང་མཚུངས་པར་ཤོག  །

chö kyi gyalpo khyö dang tsungpar shok

And become your very equal, O sovereign of Dharma!

 

ཅེས་པའང་ཀུན་དགའ་ཕྲིན་ལས་རྒྱ་མཚོ་དོན་གྲུབ་དབང་གི་རྒྱལ་པོས་འདར་གྲོང་ཆེན་གྱི་རྗེ་བླ་མའི་མཆོད་སྡོང་རིན་པོ་ཆེའི་མདུན་མངོན་པར་དད་པའི་བློས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པ་བཞིན་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ།    །མེ་སྤྲེལ་ཟླ་༩ཚེས་༧མཆོད་སྡོང་མདུན་སྡོད་ནུབ་འཇམ་དཔལ་ཆོས་དབྱིངས་གསུང་དབང་གི་དབང་གཞན་ལ་བསྐུར་བ་སོགས་དང་གོང་གི་མིང་འདི་སྔར་ཡོད་པ་ལ་དོན་གྲུབ་དབང་གི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཟེར་བ་སོགས་རྨིས།  ས་སྐྱ་བདག་ཁྲི་ཨཱ་ཡུ་བཛྲས་ཕུར་པའི་སྨད་ལས་གནང་སྐབས་སྔགས་འཆང་ཆེན་པོ་མདུན་ཐད་བཞུགས་པའི་ཉམས་དང་།  འཇམ་དབྱངས་གཟི་འོད་འབར་བར་གསོལ་སྨོན་སྐབས་བྱིན་རླབས་ཀྱི་མཚན་མ་ཕྲན་བུ་བྱུང་བ་བརྗེད་དེ་ཐལ།།    །།

Grant your blessings, so that this prayer, made by Kunga Trinlé Gyatso Döndrup Wanggi Gyalpo with a mind of vivid faith before the lord guru’s precious reliquary at Dar Drongchen, may be fulfilled.

 

On the seventh day of the ninth month of the Fire Monkey year (1956), while staying for a night in the presence of this master’s reliquary, I dreamt that I conferred the other empowerments of Dharmadhātu Vāgīśvara Mañjuśrī and so on, and that I had the name given above in the past and was called Wanggi Gyalpo. When Sakya Daktri Āyurvajra conferred the lower rites of Kīla, I felt that the great Mantra Holder was seated directly before me, and when offering prayers and aspirations to the ‘Blazing Jewel Light’ Mañjughoṣa, I received some slight indication of blessings, which then faded as my memory lapsed.
