Three Verses on the Crucial Point

Pure awareness is as unchanging and immutable as space,
Unimproved and unimpaired by virtues or misdeeds, happiness or sorrow.
If you can abide by it, so that the waves of thought cease
Without suppression or cultivation, that is the way of the yogi.

Mental movement, as unreal as a mirage in the sky,
Is essentially empty but still deceives those who lack spiritual maturity.
By following such movement one only fetters oneself,
And, with such delusion, the wheel of conditioning continues to turn.

Aho! Bring thoughts within the domain of pure awareness
And let the false cave of the mind—rigpa’s own expression—collapse in basic space.
When you have captured the throne of mind’s primordial nature,
So-called buddhahood is not to be found elsewhere.

These three verses on the crucial point were composed on the 25th day of the first month in the Water Dragon year.[1]
