༄༅། །ཐུབ་པའི་བསྟོད་པ་གང་ཚེ་རྐང་གཉིས་མ། །

Short Praise of the Buddha's Deeds

attributed to Āryaśūra

 

གང་ཚེ་རྐང་གཉིས་གཙོ་བོ་ཁྱོད་བལྟམས་ཚེ། །

gang tsé kang nyi tsowo khyö tam tsé

When you were born, chief among human beings,

ས་ཆེན་འདི་ལ་གོམ་པ་བདུན་བོར་ནས། །

sa chen di la gompa dün bor né

You took seven steps on this earth and said:

ང་ནི་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདི་ན་མཆོག་ཅེས་གསུངས། །

nga ni jikten di na chok ché sung

“In this world I am supreme.”

དེ་ཚེ་མཁས་པ་ཁྱོད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

detsé khepa khyö la chaktsal lo

To you, O wise one, I pay homage!¹

 

དང་པོ་དགའ་ལྡན་ལྷ་ཡི་ཡུལ་ནས་བྱོན། །

dangpo ganden lha yi yul né jön

First, you descended from the heaven of Tuṣita,

རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་ཏུ་ཡུམ་གྱི་ལྷུམས་སུ་ཞུགས། །

gyalpö khab tu yum gyi lhum su zhuk

And in the royal home entered your mother’s womb;

ལུམྦི་ནི་ཡི་ཚལ་དུ་ཐུབ་པ་བལྟམས། །

lumbini yi tsal du tubpa tam

In the grove at Lumbinī, O sage, you were born:

བཅོམ་ལྡན་ལྷ་ཡི་ལྷ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

chomden lha yi lha la chaktsal lo

To the victorious ‘god among gods’, I pay homage!

 

གཞལ་ཡས་ཁང་དུ་མ་མ་བརྒྱད་བཞིས་མཆོད། །

zhalyé khang du mama gyé zhi chö

You were tended by thirty-two nurses at the palace,

ཤཱཀྱའི་གྲོང་དུ་གཞོན་ནུས་རོལ་རྩེད་མཛད། །

shakyé drong du zhönnü roltsé dzé

You spent your youth in sports at the house of the Śākyas;

སེར་སྐྱའི་གནས་སུ་ས་འཚོ་ཁབ་ཏུ་བཞེས། །

serkyé né su sa tso khab tu zhé

At Kapilavastu you took Gopā as your wife:

སྲིད་གསུམ་མཚུངས་མེད་སྐུ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

si sum tsungmé ku la chaktsal lo

To you who are unequalled in the three worlds, I pay homage!

 

གྲོང་ཁྱེར་སྒོ་བཞིར་སྐྱོ་བའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་ནས། །

drongkhyer go zhir kyowé tsul ten né

At the four city gates, you were shown the four kinds of sorrow,

མཆོད་རྟེན་རྣམ་དག་དྲུང་དུ་དབུ་སྐྲ་བསིལ། །

chörten namdak drung du utra sil

And cut your own hair in front of the Viśuddha Stūpa;

ནཻ་རཉྫ་ནའི་འགྲམ་དུ་དཀའ་ཐུབ་མཛད། །

nairanjané dram du katub dzé

On the banks of the Nairañjanā you practised as an ascetic:

སྒྲིབ་གཉིས་སྐྱོན་དང་བྲལ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

drib nyi kyön dangdral la chaktsal lo

To you who are free from the faults of the two obscurations, I pay homage!

 

རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་ཏུ་གླང་ཆེན་སྨྱོན་པ་བཏུལ། །

gyalpö khab tu langchen nyönpa tul

At Rājagṛha you tamed a rogue elephant,

ཡངས་པ་ཅན་དུ་སྤྲེའུས་སྦྲང་རྩི་ཕུལ། །

yangpachen du pé'ü drangtsi pul

In Vaiśālī the monkeys offered you honey;

མ་ག་དྷ་རུ་ཐུབ་པ་མངོན་སངས་རྒྱས། །

magadha ru tubpa ngön sangye

In Magadha, O sage, you realized buddhahood:

མཁྱེན་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་འབར་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

khyenpé yeshe bar la chaktsal lo

To you in whom omniscient wisdom blossomed, I pay homage!

 

ཝཱ་ར་ཎཱ་སིར་ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར། །

varanasir chö kyi khorlo kor

At Vārāṇasī you turned the wheel of Dharma,

ཛེ་ཏའི་ཚལ་དུ་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་ཆེན་པོ་བསྟན། །

dzeté tsal du chotrul chenpo ten

And in the Jeta Grove you showed great miracles;

རྩྭ་མཆོག་གྲོང་དུ་དགོངས་པ་མྱ་ངན་འདས། །

tsachok drong du gongpa nya ngen dé

At Kuśinagara your wisdom mind passed into parinirvāṇa:

ཐུགས་ནི་ནམ་མཁའ་འདྲ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

tuk ni namkha dra la chaktsal lo

To you whose mind is like the sky, I pay homage!

 

འདི་ལྟར་བསྟན་པའི་བདག་པོ་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས། །

ditar tenpé dakpo chomdendé

Through the merit of this brief praise of

མཛད་པའི་ཚུལ་ལ་མདོ་ཙམ་བསྟོད་པ་ཡི། །

dzepé tsul la do tsam töpa yi

The deeds of the Enlightened One, Master of the Teaching,

དགེ་བས་འགྲོ་བ་ཀུན་གྱི་སྤྱོད་པ་ཡང༌། །

gewé drowa kün gyi chöpa yang

May the actions of all living beings

བདེ་གཤེགས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་མཛད་དང་མཚུངས་པར་ཤོག  །

deshek nyi kyi dzé dang tsungpar shok

Come to equal the acts of the Sugata himself.

 

ཅེས་པ་འདི་སློབ་དཔོན་དཔའ་བོས་མཛད་པའོ། །

This was composed by the ācārya Śūra.
