Praise of Avalokiteśvara

༄༅། །འཕགས་པ་སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས་དབང་ཕྱུག་ལ་བསྟོད་པ།

Praise of Noble Avalokiteśvara

ༀ་འཇིག་རྟེན་མགོན་པོ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

om, jikten gönpo la chaktsal lo

Oṃ. Homage to the Lord of the World!

འཇིག་རྟེན་བླ་མ་སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་གྱིས་བསྟོད་པ་པོ། །

jikten lama sipa sum gyi töpa po

Guru of all, you are honoured by the three worlds,

ལྷ་ཡི་གཙོ་བོ་བདུད་དང་ཚངས་པས་བསྟོད་པ་པོ། །

lha yi tsowo dü dang tsangpé töpa po

You are lauded by leading gods, Māra and Brahmā,

ཐུབ་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཆོག་བསྟོད་པས་གྲུབ་པར་མཛད་པ་པོ། །

tubpé gyal chok töpé drubpar dzepapo

When praised, you bring the highest victory of a sage—

འཇིག་རྟེན་གསུམ་གྱི་མགོན་པོ་མཆོག་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

jikten sum gyi gönpo chok la chaktsal lo

Supreme lord of the three worlds, to you I pay homage!

 

བདེ་གཤེགས་དཔག་མེད་སྐུ་སྟེ་སྐུ་བཟང་འཛིན་པ་པོ། །

deshek pakmé ku té ku zang dzin pa po

Your excellent form contains countless bliss-gone buddhas.

བདེ་གཤེགས་སྣང་བ་མཐའ་ཡས་དབུ་རྒྱན་འཛིན་པ་པོ། །

deshek nangwa tayé ugyen dzin pa po

You bear the Buddha Boundless Light at your crown.

ཕྱག་གཡས་མཆོག་སྦྱིན་ཡི་དྭགས་བཀྲེས་སྐོམ་སེལ་བ་པོ། །

chak yé chok jin yidak trekom sel wa po

Your right hand is bountiful, dispelling the pretas’ famine and drought

ཕྱག་གཡོན་གསེར་གྱི་པདྨས་རྣམ་པར་བརྒྱན་པ་པོ། །

chak yön ser gyi pemé nampar gyen pa po

And your left is perfectly adorned with a golden lotus.

དྲི་ཞིམ་རལ་པའི་ཕྲེང་བ་དམར་སེར་འཁྱུག་པ་པོ། །

drizhim ralpé trengwa marser khyuk pa po

Your fragrant locks of hair are golden and glistening.

ཞལ་རས་རྒྱས་པ་ཟླ་བ་ལྟ་བུར་མཛེས་པ་པོ། །

zhalré gyepa dawa tabur dzé pa po

Your broad face is as lovely as the moon.

སྤྱན་གྱི་པདྨ་མཆོག་ཏུ་བཟང་ཞིང་ཡངས་པ་པོ། །

chen gyi pema chok tu zang zhing yang pa po

Your lotus-eyes are supremely beautiful and wide.

ཁ་བ་དུང་ལྟར་རྣམ་དཀར་དྲི་ངད་ལྡན་པ་པོ། །

khawa dung tar namkar dringé den pa po

Your body is as white as snow or conch and sweetly scented.

དྲི་མེད་འོད་ཆགས་མུ་ཏིག་ཚོམ་བུ་འཛིན་པ་པོ། །

drimé ö chak mutik tsombu dzin pa po

You clasp a string of immaculate, gleaming pearls.

མཛེས་པའི་འོད་ཟེར་སྐྱ་རེངས་དམར་པོས་བརྒྱན་པ་པོ། །

dzepé özer kya reng marpö gyen pa po

You radiate rays of dazzling light, red as the dawn.

པདྨའི་མཚོ་ལྟར་ཕྱག་ནི་དངར་བར་བྱས་པ་པོ། །

pemé tso tar chak ni ngarwar jé pa po

Your arms are perfectly poised like lotuses on a lake;

སྟོན་ཀའི་སྤྲིན་གྱི་མདོག་དང་ལྡན་ཞིང་གཞོན་པ་པོ། །

tönké trin gyi dok dangden zhing zhön pa po

They are youthful and white as autumn clouds.

རིན་ཆེན་མང་པོས་དཔུང་བ་གཉིས་ནི་བརྒྱན་པ་པོ། །

rinchen mangpö pungwa nyi ni gyen pa po

Your two shoulders are adorned with many jewels.

ལོ་མའི་མཆོག་ལྟར་ཕྱག་མཐིལ་གཞོན་ཞིང་འཇམ་པ་པོ། །

lomé chok tar chak til zhön zhing jam pa po

Your palms are youthful and as gentle as a leaf.

རི་དྭགས་པགས་པས་ནུ་མ་གཡོན་པ་བཀབ་པ་པོ། །

ridak pakpé numa yönpa kab pa po

Your left breast is draped with a deerskin.

སྙན་ཆ་གདུ་བུས་སྒེག་ཅིང་རྒྱན་རྣམས་འཆང་བ་པོ། །

nyencha dubü gek ching gyen nam chang wa po

You are adorned with earrings, bracelets and anklets.

དྲི་མ་མེད་པའི་པདྨའི་མཆོག་ལ་གནས་པ་པོ། །

drima mepé pemé chok la né pa po

You rest upon a supreme, unsullied lotus.

ལྟེ་བའི་ངོས་ནི་པདྨའི་འདབ་ལྟར་འཇམ་པ་པོ། །

tewé ngö ni pemé dab tar jam pa po

Your navel is as soft as a lotus petal.

གསེར་གྱི་སྐེ་རགས་མཆོག་ལ་ནོར་བུས་སྤྲས་པ་པོ། །

ser gyi ké rak chok la norbü tré pa po

Your supreme golden belt is jewel-encrusted.

སྟ་ཟུར་དཀྲིས་པའི་རས་བཟང་ཤམ་ཐབས་འཛིན་པ་པོ། །

ta zur tripé ré zang shamtab dzin pa po

Your waist is girdled with a garment of finest cloth.

ཐུབ་པའི་མཁྱེན་མཆོག་མཚོ་ཆེན་ཕ་རོལ་ཕྱིན་པ་པོ། །

tubpé khyen chok tso chen parol chin pa po

You transcend the great ocean with the supreme knowledge of a sage.

མཆོག་བརྙེས་བསོད་ནམས་མང་པོ་ཉེ་བར་བསགས་པ་པོ། །

chok nyé sönam mangpo nyewar sak pa po

You have amassed abundant merit and attained pre-eminence.

རྟག་ཏུ་བདེ་བའི་འབྱུང་གནས་རྒ་ནད་སེལ་བ་པོ། །

taktu dewé jungné ga né sel wa po

You banish old age and sickness and are a wellspring of eternal joy.

གསུམ་མཐར་མཛད་ཅིང་མཁའ་སྤྱོད་སྤྱོད་པ་སྟོན་པ་པོ། །

sum tar dzé ching khachö chöpa tön pa po

You bring the three to an end¹ and display celestial action.

ལུས་ཅན་མཆོག་སྟེ་བདུད་དཔུང་འཁྲུགས་ལས་རྒྱལ་བ་པོ། །

lüchen chok té düpung truk lé gyal wa po

You are supreme among the embodied, triumphant over demonic hordes.

གསེར་གྱི་རྐང་གདུབ་སྒྲ་ཡིས་ཞབས་ཡིད་འོང་བ་པོ། །

ser gyi kang dub dra yi zhab yi ong wa po

Your golden anklets chime merrily at your feet.²

ཚངས་པའི་གནས་པ་བཞི་ཡིས་དབེན་པར་མཛད་པ་པོ། །

tsangpé nepa zhi yi wenpar dze pa po

You create beauty³ through the four brahma abodes;

ངང་བའི་འགྲོས་འདྲ་གླང་ཆེན་དྲེགས་འདྲར་གཤེགས་པ་པོ། །

ngangwé drö dra langchen drek drar shek pa po

You move with swan-like grace and elephantine majesty.

ཚོགས་ཀུན་ཉེ་བར་བསགས་ཤིང་བསྟན་པ་གཉེར་བ་པོ། །

tsok kün nyewar sak shing tenpa nyer wa po

You have gathered all accumulations and pursue the teachings.⁴

འོ་མའི་མཚོ་དང་ཆུ་ཡི་མཚོ་ལས་སྒྲོལ་བ་པོ། །

omé tso dang chu yi tso lé drol wa po

You liberate from the sea of milk and ocean of water.⁵

 

གང་ཞིག་རྟག་ཏུ་ཐོ་རངས་ལངས་ནས་གུས་པ་ཡིས། །

gangzhik taktu torang lang né güpa yi

Whoever rises regularly at the break of dawn,

སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས་ཀྱི་དབང་པོ་ཡིད་ལ་སེམས་བྱེད་ཅིང་། །

chenrezik kyi wangpo yi la sem jé ching

Devotedly brings Lord Avalokiteśvara to mind,

བསྟོད་པའི་མཆོག་འདིས་དག་ཅིང་གསལ་བར་བསྟོད་བྱེད་ན། །

töpé chok di dak ching salwar tö jé na

And eulogizes him with these supreme praises

དེ་ནི་སྐྱེས་པའམ་ཡང་ན་བུད་མེད་ཡིན་ཡང་རུང་། །

dé ni kyepa am yangna bümé yin yang rung

Will, no matter whether they be male or female,

སྐྱེ་བ་འདི་དང་མ་འོངས་སྐྱེ་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ། །

kyewa di dang ma ong kyewa tamché du

Find that both in this world and in all future lives,

འཇིག་རྟེན་འཇིག་རྟེན་ལས་འདས་དགོས་པ་ཀུན་འགྲུབ་འགྱུར། །

jikten jikten lé dé göpa kün drub gyur

All their needs, mundane and transcendent, are fulfilled!

 

དགེ་སློང་དཔལ་མོས་མཛད་པ་རྫོགས་སོ།།
