Calling the Guru from Afar

རང་གི་སྤྱི་བོའི་སྟེང་མཁར།  །

rang gi chiwö teng khar

In the space above the crown of my head,

པད་དཀར་ཟླ་བའི་དབུས་ན།  །

pekar dawé ü na

In the centre of a white lotus and moon,

དྲིན་ཆེན་རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ།  །

drinchen tsawé lama

Is my own gracious root guru

རྣམ་པ་པཎ་ཆེན་བི་མ།  །

nampa penchen bi ma

In the form of paṇḍita Vimalamitra—

ལྗང་གསལ་ཞལ་གཅིག་ཕྱག་གཉིས།  །

jang sal zhal chik chak nyi

Bright green, with one face and two hands,

པཎྜི་ཏ་ཡི་ཆ་བྱད།  །

pandita yi chajé

And wearing the costume of a paṇḍita.

མཉམ་བཞག་ཚེ་བུམ་འཛིན་ཅིང་།  །

nyamzhak tsebum dzin ching

His hands rest in equanimity and hold a long-life vase,

ཤང་རྩེར་ཨ་ཡིག་དཀར་པོ།  །

shang tser a yik karpo

And there is a white syllable A at the tip of his nose,

འོད་དང་འོད་ཟེར་འཕྲོ་བ།  །

ö dang özer trowa

From which light and rays of light shine forth.

སྐྱབས་ཀུན་འདུས་པའི་བདག་ཉིད།  །

kyab kündüpé daknyi

He is the very embodiment of all sources of refuge,

མངོན་སུམ་བཞུགས་པར་གསལ་འདེབས།  །

ngönsum zhukpar sal deb

Clearly and directly present before me.

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

khyen no khyen no lama khyen no

Watch over me! Watch over me! O guru, watch over me!

 

དཀོན་མཆོག་ཀུན་འདུས་ངོ་བོ།  །

könchok kündü ngowo

Essence and epitome of the Three Jewels,

རྩ་གསུམ་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་སྤྱི་གཟུགས།  །

tsa sum gyatsö chizuk

Embodiment of the oceanic Three Roots,

འཇམ་དཔལ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བཤེས་གཉེན།  །

jampal chö kyi shenyen

Mañjuśrīmitra,

མི་མངོན་དབྱིངས་ནས་ཐུགས་རྗེས།  །

mi ngön ying né tukjé

In your compassion, gaze from the invisible sphere

སྐལ་ལྡན་བདག་ལ་བརྩེས་དགོངས།  །

kalden dak la tsé gong

And lovingly consider me, fortunate as I am.

རྡོ་རྗེའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་འབེབས་མཛོད།  །

dorjé yeshe beb dzö

Shower down a rain of vajra-like wisdom.

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

khyen no khyen no lama khyen no

Watch over me! Watch over me! O guru, watch over me!

 

རང་རིག་གཞོན་ནུ་བུམ་སྐུ།  །

rangrig zhönnu bumku

The youthful vase body of intrinsic awareness,

འདུ་འབྲལ་མེད་པར་རྟག་བཞུགས།  །

dudral mepar tak zhuk

Remaining forever beyond union and separation,

སྐུ་གསུམ་དབྱེར་མེད་ངོ་བོ།  །

ku sum yermé ngowo

The essence of the indivisible three kāyas,

འོད་གསལ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེས།  །

ösal trulpé dorjé

Ösal Trulpé Dorje,¹

དབྱིངས་རིག་དབྱེར་མེད་ཀློང་ནས།  །

yingrik yermé long né

From the expanse of indivisible space and awareness,

སྐལ་ལྡན་བདག་ལ་བརྩེས་དགོངས།  །

kalden dak la tsé gong

Lovingly consider me, fortunate as I am.

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

khyen no khyen no lama khyen no

Watch over me! Watch over me! O guru, watch over me!

 

སྣང་སྲིད་དག་པ་རབ་འབྱམས།  །

nangsi dakpa rabjam

From the dharmakāya expanse of great bliss,

བདེ་ཆེན་ཆོས་སྐུའི་ཀློང་ནས།  །

dechen chökü long né

The infinite purity of appearance and existence,

པདྨ་ལས་འཁྲུངས་རྒྱལ་ཚབ།  །

pema lé trung gyaltsab

Representative of the one born from a lotus,²

འོད་གསལ་མདོ་སྔགས་གླིང་པས།  །

ösal do ngak lingpé

Ösal Dongak Lingpa,³

སྐལ་ལྡན་བདག་ལ་བརྩེས་དགོངས།  །

kalden dak la tsé gong

Lovingly consider me, fortunate as I am.

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

khyen no khyen no lama khyen no

Watch over me! Watch over me! O guru, watch over me!

 

གར་བཞུགས་སྤྲུལ་པའི་ཞིང་ཁམས།  །

gar zhuk trulpé zhingkham

In emanated pure realms, wherever they might be,

ཡོངས་རྫོགས་བསྟན་པའི་མངའ་བདག  །

yongdzok tenpé ngadak

The sovereign of the teachings in their entirety,

བཀའ་བབས་བདུན་ལྡན་བླ་མ།  །

kabab dünden lama

Guru who holds the seven forms of transmission,

འཇམ་དབྱངས་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་དབང་པོས།  །

jamyang khyentsé wangpö

Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo,

རྟག་ཏུ་འབྲལ་མེད་ཐུགས་རྗེས།  །

taktu dralmé tukjé

In your compassion, from which there is no separation,

སྐལ་ལྡན་བདག་ལ་བརྩེས་དགོངས།  །

kalden dak la tsé gong

Lovingly consider me, fortunate as I am.

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

khyen no khyen no lama khyen no

Watch over me! Watch over me! O guru, watch over me!

 

སྙིང་ཁ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་ཕོ་བྲང་།  །

nyingkha chö kyi podrang

In the palace of dharmadhātu at my heart,

འོད་གསལ་སྒྱུ་མའི་རང་གཟུགས།  །

ösal gyumé rang zuk

The illusory embodiment of clear light,

མཁྱེན་བརྩེ་ནུས་པའི་མངའ་བདག  །

khyen tsé nü pé ngadak

The master of knowledge, love and capacity,

འཇམ་དབྱངས་བློ་གྲོས་རྒྱ་མཚོས།  །

jamyang lodrö gyatsö

Jamyang Lodrö Gyatso,⁴

དགོངས་པའི་དབྱིངས་ནས་གཟིགས་ཤིག  །

gongpé ying né zik shik

Look now from the space of realized intent.

སྐལ་ལྡན་བདག་ལ་བརྩེ་དགོངས།  །

kalden dak la tsé gong

Lovingly consider me, fortunate as I am.

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ།  །

khyen no khyen no lama khyen no

Watch over me! Watch over me! O guru, watch over me!

 

བདག་རྒྱུད་ཆོས་དང་འདྲེས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

dak gyü chö dang drepar jingyi lob

Inspire me to blend my mindstream with the Dharma.

ལས་ངན་སྡིག་སྒྲིབ་དག་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

lé ngen dikdrib dakpar jingyi lob

Inspire me to purify negative actions, misdeeds and obscurations.

རྐྱེན་ངན་བར་ཆད་ཞི་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

kyen ngen barché zhiwar jingyi lob

Inspire me to pacify obstacles and adversity.

སྡོམ་དང་དམ་ཚིག་དག་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

dom dang damtsik dakpar jingyi lob

Inspire me to keep my vows and commitments pure.

རིམ་གཉིས་མཐའ་རུ་ཕྱིན་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

rim nyi ta ru chinpar jingyi lob

Inspire me to complete the two stages.⁵

དགོངས་པའི་རྩལ་ཆེན་རྫོགས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

gongpé tsal chen dzokpar jingyi lob

Inspire me to perfect the strength of realization.

སྐུ་གསུམ་གོ་འཕང་ཐོབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།  །

ku sum gopang tobpar jingyi lob

Inspire me to attain the level of the three kāyas.

 

བླ་མའི་གནས་གསུམ་འབྲུ་གསུམ་ལས།  །

lamé né sum dru sum lé

From the three seed-syllables at the guru’s three centres,

འོད་ཟེར་དཀར་དམར་མཐིང་གསུམ་བྱུང་།  །

özer kar mar ting sum jung

Rays of white, red and blue light stream forth.

རིམ་དང་གཅིག་ཆར་ཐིམ་པ་ཡིས།  །

rim dang chikchar timpa yi

They dissolve into me in stages and all at once,

དབང་བསྐུར་སྒྲིབ་སྦྱོང་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཐོབ།  །

wangkur drib jong ngödrub tob

Bestowing empowerment, purifying obscurations, and granting attainments.

 

བླ་མ་འོད་ཞུ་རང་ལ་ཐིམ།  །

lama ö zhu rang la tim

The guru melts into light and dissolves into me.

རང་སེམས་དུས་གསུམ་རྟོག་པ་ཡི།  །

rangsem dü sum tokpa yi

Without any thought associated with the three times,

སྟོང་པའི་འོད་གསལ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབྱིངས།  །

tongpé ösal chö kyi ying

My mind settles into the dharmadhātu’s empty luminosity,

འཕོ་འགྱུར་གསལ་འགྲིབ་བྲལ་བའི་ངང་།  །

pogyur sal drib dralwé ngang

Beyond transition or change, illumination or tenebrity,

བྱར་མེད་རང་བབ་ལྷུག་པར་བཞག  །

jarmé rangbab lhukpar zhak

As I freely let go in the natural ease of inactivity.

 

འདི་ནི་ཀ་དག་ཆོས་སྐུ་ཡི།  །
བླ་མའི་སྒྲུབ་པ་མཐར་ཐུག་གོ  །

This is the ultimate accomplishment
Of the dharmakāya guru of primordial purity.

 

རྗེས་ཐོབ་བླ་མའི་རོལ་པ་དང་།  །
མ་ཡེངས་བསྲེས་ལ་ལམ་ཁྱེར་བྱ།  །
སེམས་ཅན་ཀུན་ལ་སྙིང་རྗེ་དང་།  །
ངེས་འབྱུང་དྲག་པོ་ཡང་ཡང་བསྒོམ།  །
སྨོན་ལམ་རྣམ་པར་དག་པ་གདབ།  །
དེས་ནི་དོན་གཉིས་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་འགྱུར།  །

In the post-meditation, remain undistracted from
The guru’s display as you integrate activity.
Repeatedly cultivate compassion for all sentient beings
And an intense determination to be free.
Recite pure prayers of aspiration,
And you will spontaneously accomplish twofold benefit.

 

ཅེས་པའང་གྲགས་པ་གཞན་ཕན་གྱིས་བསྐུལ་ངོར་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་བྲིས་པ་དོན་དང་ལྡན་པར་གྱུར་ཅིག། །།

Thus, Chökyi Lodrö wrote this at the behest of Drakpa Zhenpen. May it prove significant!
