Prayer to Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo1

by Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö

Namo guru ānanda-bhadrāya!2

künkhyen küntu gewé trinlé chen

All-knowing and wholly virtuous in your activity,

künzik dzoksang gyé kyi lungten nyé

All-seeing and perfect, the buddha who prophesied you,

kün ga nyingpö ringluk nyinmor jé

All-illuminating sun of the tradition of Kunga Nyingpo,

kunzang dorjé chang la solwa deb

All-conquering Vajradhara, Kunzang Dorje, to you I pray.3

dogyü gyatsö terdzö chaktok dral

With unimpeded access to a treasury of oceanic sūtras and tantras,

rabjam sheja künzik mawé seng

You are the Lion of Speech who sees all the infinite objects of knowledge,

nyingjé wangchuk chak na pekar chang

The Lord of Compassion, who holds a white lotus in his hand,

sang dzin lak na dorjér solwa deb

And the Vajra-Wielding Keeper of Secrets—to you I pray.4

trulpé dridral lodrö mizepé

With inexhaustible intelligence, free from delusion’s stain,

tekchen chö kyi drayang taktu drok

You constantly voiced the melody of Mahāyāna Dharma

gyüdé nam zhi chulung chenpo dren

And drew forth a great river of the four classes of tantra—

kalden mindrol dzé la solwa deb

To the bringer of ripening and liberation to the fortunate, I pray.

khyepar birwé tuk chü sung ngak gi

To the one who brought maturity through the four empowerments,

ten gyi kyilkhor wang zhi min dzé né

The foundational maṇḍala of Virūpa’s essential instructions, in particular,

ku zhi gopang chok la gö dzepa

And established all at the supreme level of the four kāyas—

lama gyé dzé dorjér solwa deb

Guru Hevajra, to you I pray.

ngejung pakpé tsultrim khang zang du

Within the mansion of exalted discipline and renunciation,

tachö nampar dakpé kyebu ni

You are the noble one whose view and conduct are utterly pure,

jangchok tubpé gyaltsab ngor chen jer

Lord Ngorchen, Śākyamuni’s representative in the North—

miché güpa chenpö solwa deb

With great, unshakeable devotion, I pray to you.

palden lamé tukjé jinlab kyi

As soon as we fortunate ones are touched by the crystalline moon-rays

da shel dütsi sarpé rekpé mö

Of the compassionate blessings of this glorious guru,

kalzang tsé dang lo yi kunda zhé

May the jasmine flower of our longevity and intelligence bloom,

mitün güpa kün lé kyab tu sol

And may we be protected from all forms of adversity and decline.

di né zung té tserab tamché du

From this moment on and throughout all our lives to come,

daljor ten nyé dom sum nampar dak

May we find the freedoms and advantages, purely maintain the three sets of vows,

rangzhen dön nyi gyatso lhün gyi drub

And spontaneously accomplish a vast ocean of benefit for both ourselves and others,

tenpa chok chur pelwé tashi shok

And all be auspicious for the teachings to flourish throughout the ten directions!

Thus, Chökyi Lodrö Gyatso prayed in Darjeeling in the early morning of the 25th day of Vaiśākha (Saga Dawa) [i.e., the fourth month], when commemorating the master’s anniversary.

  1. The original is untitled; this title has been added by the translator.
  2. This Sanskrit expression translates as 'Homage to the Guru Kunga Zangpo!’
  3. Each line of this verse in Tibetan begins with the syllable kun, meaning all, the first syllable of Kunga Zangpo’s name—a device that we have attempted to reproduce in the translation.
  4. This verse refers to Kunga Zangpo as an embodiment of the Lords of the Three Families: Mañjuśrī, Avalokiteśvara and Vajrapāṇi.
