The Four Thoughts¹

བླ་མ་མཁྱེན།

lama khyen

Guru, care for me!

ལན་གསུམ།

Three times

བླ་མ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་པོ་ཁྱེད་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

lama könchok sumpo khyé khyen no

Guru and Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma and Saṅgha—watch over me!

དལ་འབྱོར་རྙེད་དཀའ་ཐོབ་པ་ད་རེས་ཙམ། །

daljor nyé ka tobpa daré tsam

Now I have this unique opportunity, a free and well-favoured human form, so difficult to find.

མི་རྟག་འཆི་བ་ནམ་འོང་ཆ་མ་མཆིས། །

mitak chiwa nam ong cha machi

But it will not last forever; death can come at any moment,

འཁོར་བ་གང་དུ་སྐྱེས་ཀྱང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྒྱུ། །

khorwa gangdu kyé kyang dukngal gyu

And wherever I am born in saṃsāra, I will encounter the causes of suffering;

དགེ་སྡིག་ལས་ཀྱི་རྒྱུ་འབྲས་བསླུ་བ་མེད། །

gedik lé kyi gyundré luwamé

Whether my actions are virtuous or harmful, the karmic process of cause and effect is infallible.

ཐར་ལམ་ཐོབ་པ་བླ་མའི་ཐུགས་རྗེས་ཟུངས། །

tarlam tobpa lamé tukjé zung

O guru, hold me with your compassion, so that I find the path to liberation!

Refuge and Bodhicitta

ན་མོ། བདག་སོགས་འགྲོ་ཀུན་བྱང་ཆུབ་བར། །

namo, dak sok dro kün changchub bar

Namo. Until we attain enlightenment, I and all beings

རྩ་བ་གསུམ་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆི། །

tsawa sum la kyab su chi

Take refuge in the Three Roots—guru, yidam and ḍākinī.

གཞན་དོན་སངས་རྒྱས་འཐོབ་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །

zhendön sangye tobjé chir

So that I may attain buddhahood for the benefit of others,

སྨོན་འཇུག་དོན་དམ་བྱང་སེམས་བསྐྱེད། །

mönjuk döndam changsem kyé

I arouse bodhicitta, as aspiration, as action and on the ultimate level.

Vajrasattva

ཨཱཿ བདག་ཉིད་སྤྱི་བོར་པད་ཟླའི་སྟེང་། །

ah, daknyi chiwor pé dé teng

Āḥ. On the crown of my head, upon a lotus and moon disc,

བླ་མ་རྡོར་སེམས་ཡབ་ཡུམ་གྱི། །

lama dorsem yabyum gyi

Is the Guru Vajrasattva in union with his consort.

ཐུགས་ཀའི་སྔགས་ལས་བདུད་རྩིའི་རྒྱུན། །

tukké ngak lé dütsi gyün

From the mantra in his heart flows a stream of nectar,

བབས་པས་ནད་གདོན་སྡིག་སྒྲིབ་སྦྱངས། །

babpé né dön dikdrib jang

Which purifies all sickness, harmful influences, negative deeds and obscurations.

ཡི་གེ་བརྒྱ་པ་བརྗོད།

Recite the hundred-syllable mantra.

རྡོར་སེམས་འོད་ཞུ་རང་ལ་ཐིམ། །

dorsem ö zhu rang la tim

Vajrasattva melts into light and dissolves into me.

Maṇḍala Offering

ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ།

om ah hung

oṃ āḥ hūṃ

སྐུ་གསུམ་ཞིང་ཁམས་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་དང་། །

ku sum zhingkham longchö dang

The pure realms of the three kāyas with all their riches and resources,

ཕྱི་ནང་གསང་བའི་མཆོད་པའི་སྤྲིན། །

chi nang sangwé chöpé trin

And clouds of offerings—outer, inner and secret,

དཀོན་མཆོག་རྩ་བ་གསུམ་ལ་འབུལ། །

könchok tsawa sum la bul

I offer to the Three Jewels and the Three Roots.

བཞེས་ནས་མཆོག་ཐུན་དངོས་གྲུབ་སྩོལ། །

zhé né choktün ngödrub tsol

Please accept them, and bestow supreme and ordinary siddhis!

ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ་གུ་རུ་དེ་ཝ་ཌཱ་ཀི་ནི་ས་པ་རི་ཝཱ་ར་རཏྣ་མཎྜ་ལ་པཱུ་ཛ་མེ་གྷ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ།

om ah hung guru deva dakini sapariwara ratna mandala pudza megha ah hung

oṃ āḥ hūṃ guru deva ḍākinī saparivāra ratna maṇḍala pūja megha āḥ hūṃ

Guru Yoga

རང་མདུན་ནམ་མཁར་འཇའ་འོད་ཀློང་། །

rang dün namkhar ja ö long

In the sky before me, amidst an expanse of rainbow-coloured light,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་ཐོད་ཕྲེང་རྩལ། །

tsawé lama tötreng tsal

Is my own root guru in the form of Padma Tötreng Tsal,

བརྒྱུད་གསུམ་རིག་འཛིན་རྒྱ་མཚོས་སྐོར། །

gyü sum rigdzin gyatsö kor

Surrounded by a vast gathering of vidyādharas of the three transmissions,

སྐྱབས་ཀུན་འདུས་པའི་ངོ་བོར་བཞུགས། །

kyab kündüpé ngowor zhuk

And embodying every source of refuge.

ཚིག་བདུན་གསོལ་འདེབས་དང་བསྙེན་པ་བཛྲ་གུ་རུ་ལ་འབད། མཐར།

Put your energy into reciting the Seven-Line Prayer and the Vajra Guru mantra. At the end, recite:

གནས་གསུམ་འབྲུ་གསུམ་འོད་ཟེར་གྱིས། །

né sum dru sum özer gyi

Rays of light stream from the three syllables at the guru’s three centres,

བྱིན་རླབས་དབང་དང་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཐོབ། །

jinlab wang dang ngödrub tob

And I receive blessings, empowerments and siddhis.

བླ་མ་འོད་ཞུ་རང་ལ་ཐིམ། །

lama ö zhu rang la tim

The guru melts into light and dissolves into me.

དབྱེར་མེད་མ་བཅོས་ལྷུག་པར་བཞག །

yermé machö lhukpar zhak

Inseparably, I rest in a natural state of ease.

དགེ་བ་བསྔོའོ།།

Dedicate the merit.
