The Seed of Faith

A Prayer to the Sublime Ones

ན་མོ་གུ་རུ་བྷྱཿ

Namo gurubhyaḥ!

སྤངས་རྟོགས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཞི་བ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབྱིངས། །

pang tok tarchin zhiwa chö kyi ying

Peaceful space of reality in which abandonment and realization are complete,

མཚན་དཔེའི་དཔལ་འབར་བདེ་ཆེན་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་རྫོགས། །

tsenpé palbar dechen longchö dzok

Perfect enjoyment of great bliss, blazing with the splendour of the signs and marks,

གདུལ་བྱའི་ཁམས་དང་མཐུན་པར་སྤྲུལ་པའི་གར། །

duljé kham dang tünpar trulpé gar

And dance-like emanations attuned to the temperaments of those to be trained—

སྐུ་གསུམ་རྣམ་འདྲེན་རྒྱ་མཚོར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

ku sum namdren gyatsor solwa deb

To the oceanic guides of these three kāyas, I pray.

 

བསྐལ་བཟང་སྒྲོན་མེ་བཞི་པ་ཤཱཀྱའི་ཏོག །

kalzang drönmé zhipa shakyé tok

Fourth light of this Fortunate Age, foremost of Śākyas,

མ་ཕམ་འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས་དང་གསང་བའི་བདག །

mapam jampé yang dang sangwé dak

Invincible One, Mañjughoṣa, Lord of Secrets,

སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས་དབང་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་སོགས། །

chenrezik wang tsokyé dorjé sok

Mighty Avalokiteśvara, Lake-born Vajra and the rest—

རྒྱལ་དང་དེ་སྲས་རྣམས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

gyal dang dé sé nam la solwa deb

To the victorious ones and their heirs, I pray.

 

གནས་བརྟན་བཅུ་དྲུག་གཏད་རབས་རྣམ་པ་བདུན། །

neten chudruk té rab nampa dün

Sixteen Elders, Seven Patriarchs,¹

རྒྱན་དྲུག་སློབ་དཔོན་གསུམ་དང་རིག་འཛིན་བརྒྱད། །

gyen druk lobpön sum dang rigdzin gyé

Six Ornaments, Three Masters, Eight Vidyādharas,

རྣལ་འབྱོར་དབང་ཕྱུག་བརྒྱད་ཅུ་རྩ་བཞི་སོགས། །

naljor wangchuk gyechu tsa zhi sok

Together with the eighty-four lords of yoga and the rest—

འཕགས་ཡུལ་པཎ་གྲུབ་རྣམས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

pakyul pendrub nam la solwa deb

To the scholars and adepts of the Land of Āryas, I pray.

 

གངས་ཅན་བསྟན་པའི་སྲོལ་འབྱེད་རྙིང་མ་བ། །

gangchen tenpé sol jé nyingmawa

Nyingmapas, pioneers of the teachings in this Land of Snows,

ཡོངས་རྫོགས་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་མཛད་ས་སྐྱ་པ། །

yongdzok tenpa gyé dzé sakyapa

Sakyapas, who caused the teachings as a whole to expand,

བསྟན་འཛིན་བྱེ་བའི་འབྱུང་གནས་བཀའ་གདམས་པའི། །

tendzin jewé jungné kadampé

And Kadampas, source of many million holders of the teachings—

བཤེས་གཉེན་བརྒྱུད་པར་བཅས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

shenyen gyüpar ché la solwa deb

To these spiritual guides together with their lineages, I pray.

 

ཟླ་མེད་གྲུབ་པའི་གསེང་ལམ་བཀའ་བརྒྱུད་པ། །

damé drubpé seng lam kagyü pa

Kagyüpas, unrivalled in their direct path to accomplishment,

ཟབ་རྒྱས་རྒྱུད་སྡེའི་མངའ་བདག་བུ་དོལ་གཉིས། །

zabgyé gyüdé ngadak bu dol nyi

Butön and Dolpopa, sovereigns of the tantra class, profound and vast,

འཇམ་དབྱངས་ཆོས་ཀྱི་ཉི་མ་ཙོང་ཁ་པ། །

jamyang chökyi nyima tsongkhapa

And Tsongkhapa, sun of Dharma and Mañjughoṣa himself—

བརྒྱུད་འཛིན་སློབ་མར་བཅས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

gyüdzin lobmar ché la solwa deb

To these holders of the teachings together with their students, I pray.

 

གཞན་ཡང་ཚད་མ་འདུལ་མངོན་ཕར་ཕྱིན་དང༌། །

zhenyang tsema dul ngön parchin dang

And I pray too to all the other great holders of the teachings

དབུ་མ་ཞི་བྱེད་གཅོད་ཡུལ་བརྒྱུད་པ་སོགས། །

uma zhijé chöyul gyüpa sok

Of scripture and realization based on exposition and practice

བཤད་དང་སྒྲུབ་པ་ལ་བརྟེན་ལུང་རྟོགས་ཀྱི། །

shé dang drubpa la ten lungtok kyi

Of Valid Cognition, Vinaya, Abhidharma, Prajñāpāramitā,

བསྟན་འཛིན་ཆེན་པོ་རྣམས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

tendzin chenpo nam la solwa deb

Middle Way, Pacification, Severance and the other lineages.

 

ཁྱད་པར་སྟོན་པ་མཆོག་ནས་ད་ལྟའི་བར། །

khyepar tönpa chok né danté bar

Above all, to that supreme embodiment of all the wisdom

རིམ་བྱོན་བརྒྱུད་པའི་བླ་མ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི། །

rim jön gyüpé lama tamché kyi

Possessed by every guru in the succession of lineage teachers

ཡེ་ཤེས་གཅིག་ཏུ་བསྡུས་པའི་སྤྱི་གཟུགས་མཆོག །

yeshe chik tu düpé chizuk chok

From the Supreme Guide down to those of the present day—

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

tsawé lamé zhab la solwa deb

To my very own root guru, I pray.

 

དེ་ལྟར་མི་ཕྱེད་གུས་པས་གསོལ་བཏབ་མཐུས། །

detar miché güpé soltab tü

Through the power of praying like this with unwavering devotion,

སྲིད་ལས་ངེས་འབྱུང་ཞི་བདེར་མ་ཆགས་པར། །

si lé ngejung zhider machakpar

May I be inspired to renounce existence yet remain unattached to the bliss of quiescence,

བྱམས་དང་སྙིང་རྗེ་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་གཉིས་ཀྱིས། །

jam dang nyingjé changchub sem nyi kyi

And, with love, compassion and the twofold spirit of awakening,

རྒྱལ་སྲས་སྤྱོད་ལ་འཇུག་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

gyalsé chö la jukpar jingyi lob

Take up the conduct of the bodhisattva heirs to the victorious.

 

ཚུལ་གནས་ཐོས་བསམ་སྒོམ་པ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཞིང༌། །

tsul né tö sam gompa tarchin zhing

Inspire me to maintain discipline, perfect study, contemplation and meditation,

དབང་གིས་རྒྱུད་སྨིན་དམ་ཚིག་རྣམ་པར་དག །

wang gi gyü min damtsik nampar dak

Mature my mind through empowerment, maintain pure samaya,

རིམ་གཉིས་ལས་བྱུང་སློབ་དང་མི་སློབ་པའི། །

rim nyi lé jung lob dang mi lobpé

And realize the primordial wisdom of union through training

ཟུང་འཇུག་ཡེ་ཤེས་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

zungjuk yeshe drubpar jingyi lob

And through no-more-training in the two phases.

 

ཞེས་པའང་རིས་མེད་པའི་བསྟན་པ་ལ་དག་པའི་སྣང་བ་མཆོག་ཏུ་རྒྱས་པ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་དབང་པོས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པ་དགེ་ལེགས་སུ་གྱུར་ཅིག།

Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, who has developed supreme purity of perception towards the teachings without sectarian bias, offered this prayer. May it bring virtue and excellence!
