Wish-Fulfilling Jewelled Scroll

This text contains instructions on the yogic practices of channels and winds (tsa-lung) from the Longchen Nyingtik tradition. If practised incorrectly and without supervision, these practices can cause serious physical and mental problems, and therefore these texts have traditionally been kept secret and restricted to practitioners—and this is still the case today. After careful consideration and in consultation with the lineage holders of the Longchen Nyingtik, these texts are now being published online, for the benefit of serious practitioners who have received the appropriate transmissions and are practising under the guidance of a qualified teacher. Given their nature, please treat these texts with respect and do not reproduce them on any social media platforms.

The Wish-Fulfilling Jewelled Scroll of the Whispered Transmission
The Prāṇa-Based Perfection Stage of Bliss and Emptiness, from the Heart-Essence of the Vast Expanse
revealed by Jigme Lingpa
Homage to the primordial expanse of Samantabhadra!

In the times to come, sentient beings
Will have short lives, little merit, scant means,
No opportunity to practise and weak resolve.
At such a time, for those who lack the chance to practice
The effortless view of the luminous Great Perfection
Supported by the postures of the three kāyas,
There is the path of method that relies on the key points—
The crucial point of ascertaining wind and mind as inseparable.
Within three weeks, they will never return to saṃsāra,
And all the signs and qualities of the path will become manifest.
This is the profound Dharma of the whispered lineage,
The great secret path of Vajrasattva;
Apart from this, I have taught nothing.

See for yourself whether it be true or false.
Should you divulge this to others,
Your samayas will be impaired and you will fall into the hells.
This is especially so for those who are glib-tongued but dark-hearted,
The deceitful who keep up appearances before the guru,
And shameless ones jaded by Dharma—
To reveal to them even a mere hint of this instruction
Would become the executioner of your own life.
Therefore, guard it more dearly than your own heart. Samaya.
First, rise briskly from your bed.
On an empty stomach, when winds and awareness are clear,
Perform the general preliminaries,
And in particular, apply the vital point of guru yoga.
With fervent devotion, receive the four empowerments.
For the main practice, the key point of the body is to hold the posture straight.
rangnyi rigdzin dorjé chö
I am the vidyādhara Vajradharma, semi-wrathful,
ngokya zhal chik chak nyipa
Light blue, with one face and two arms,
kyangkum dortab zhi ma tro
Poised with my right leg drawn up and left leg extended,
naljor marmo dri töchen
And my arms crossed, holding vajra and bell.
dang tril dordril nol tab jor
I embrace the red yoginī, who holds a curved knife and skull-cup;
yabyum nyisumepa yi
Male and female deities inseparably united.
ku ü drangpor tsauma
At the centre of my body, the central channel—the dharmakāya—
tsennyi zhiden chö kyi ku
Runs straight up and is endowed with four qualities.
yé yön rokyang long trul nyi
To its right and left are the rasanā and lalanā—the sambhogakāya and nirmāṇakāya.
té ok umé mar na la
Below the navel, rasanā and lalanā
rokyang nam nyi chüpa yi
Enter the lower tip of the central channel.
yar na takpa né guk té
Their upper ends curve at the nape of the neck
nabuk nyi su ha ré zuk
And open into the nostrils.
umé yarna khadum khyil
The upper tip of the central channel is
[rounded.]1
rokyang nyi né lé kyi lung
Through the rasanā and lalanā, the karmic winds
yé yön ré mö dün dün bü
Are expelled alternately from the right and left nostrils, seven times each.
nyönmong nga dang jungwa ngar
The poisonous winds that depend on
tenpé lung duk sang kyi tön
The five emotions and the five elements are expelled completely.
tsa buk kyön dang dralwar sam
Imagine that the interior of the channels is free of flaws.
Then exhale with a "ha" sound.
Rest and relax the mind in the natural state.2
[Perform a ha-shake and a small yogic fall.]
dené nying gur mukpö ü
In the centre of my heart, within an orb of maroon light
kunzang ting ga nyamzhak chen
Sits Samantabhadra, about the size of a pea.
chechung senma tsampa la
Blue in colour and in meditation posture,
kyemché shintu dangwar sal
Every detail of his form vivid and clear.
dé yi tukkar ö ngé tik
At his heart, within a swirling orb
dumpor khyilwé nangkhong su
Of five-coloured light,
dang sal kyemé sok yik ah
Stands the unborn
[life-force syllable āḥ], clear and radiant.
sal tser chi yi dri tar sal
Imagine it glistening and shining, as fine as though written with the tip of a hair.
dené jorwa zhiden gyi
Then, keeping in mind the crucial points
né dang denpé lung ngub la
Of the fourfold application,3 inhale the wind,
rokyang lam gyü nying ü kyel kyal
Guiding it through the pathway of the rasanā and lalanā to the centre of the heart.
ok lung chungzé ngub jé té
[Slightly bringing up the lower winds,]4
lung yik rigpa chik tu dril
Merge wind, syllable, and awareness into one.
Applying the key points of the oral instructions,
Strive to do either a hundred,
Seventy or thirty rounds of breath.
Yet if you lack the essential pith instructions,
There is a danger that the karmic winds may enter the life-force channel
Driving you insane; there is either great benefit or harm.
But if you apply the crucial points then the life-sustaining
And downward-clearing winds merge as one.
By mastering the art of making the winds
Enter, abide, and dissolve in the central channel
The vessel with a hole in its base
Visibly appears.5 The common qualities are beyond the imagination—
For instance, with regard to the lower winds,
The smell of faeces no longer arises
And urine flows like pure water.
In particular, the knots of the channels at the navel are untied,
The realisation of the first bhūmi dawns,
And the vision of direct perception of reality arises naturally.
Of this, there is not the slightest doubt. Samaya.
This is the vital essence of all the perfection-phase practices.
Since the wisdom winds are captured within the central channel,
This is the pinnacle of all the inner heat practices.
Since mind itself is purified within the dharmakāya,
This is the sovereign of all luminosities.
Since the false cave of appearances collapses,
Illusion arises naturally within oneself.6
Since whatever arises is not bridled by thought,
One gains mastery over dreams and can transform them.
Since ordinary thoughts are transferred into wisdom,
This is the very peak of transference.7
Since the three doors are transferred into another body—that of the three vajras—
This is the supreme transference into another body.8
It is the result of all vehicles of Secret Mantra. Samaya.
The Yoga of the Warmth of Blazing and Dripping
From the Prāṇa-Based Perfection Phase of Bliss and Emptiness
Igniting the Inner Heat
With the three channels just as before,
At the upper tip of the central channel is the heruka—
The white element in the form of the syllable haṃ.
At the lower tip is the red element in the form of the Sky-Faced Lady,9
Visualized in the form of a radiant a-stroke.
Drawing the winds in through rasanā and lalanā,
Ignites the Sky-Faced Lady at the navel,
And the fire of knowledge and wisdom blazes fiercely.
Its essence is bliss,
Its nature is luminous, its quality is heat,
And the tongue of the flame is sharp,10 darting about.
Imagine that it fills the channels at the navel chakra completely
And bliss and warmth suddenly burst forth.
Likewise, do twenty-one, seven, or any number of
Rounds of breath for the different places,
Such as the dharma chakra,
The enjoyment chakra and the chakra of great bliss.
Melting of the Haṃ Syllable
Then, when the flame merely touches
The haṃ syllable at the crown
Bliss is stirred and the bindu melts.
Like the dripping of a butter-lamp,
All the channels of the crown are filled.
To the heroes and ḍākinīs of the channels and elements
Crowded together like an overflowing pod of sesame seeds
I offered the nectar of bliss and emptiness.
Imagine that the two accumulations are perfected and the two obscurations purified;
The vase empowerment is actually obtained;
And the wisdom of joy arises.
Likewise at the throat, heart,
And navel, applying the same principle as before,
Successively receive the secret empowerment,
The knowledge-wisdom empowerment,
And the fourth empowerment—imagining that you actually obtain them,
And experience the wisdoms
Of supreme joy, special joy, and innate joy.
The Conclusion
Then, at the confluence of the three channels,
The pure essence strikes the a-stroke, which blazes with heat,
Like water poured onto boiling oil.
As the fire and nectar blaze inseparably,
The great empowerment of the radiance of awareness is attained.
The whole universe is filled with flames,
Burning away all thoughts and habitual patterns
That grasp at the outer environment and the beings within it.
Finally, one's own body, together with the fire,
Grows smaller and smaller, dissolving into the state of natural simplicity.
Rest in empty luminosity.
Remove obstacles with the ha-shake and light smacks.
Rest and relax, settling awareness in its natural state.
The Signs and Results
When the key points are thus mastered,
The blazing fire of bliss-warmth makes clothing unnecessary.
Mastery is gained over the five elements,
And as the impure karmic winds are purified,
Divine sight, clairvoyance, and the like are attained.
Common qualities beyond the imagination arise,
Yet if attachment arises for them, one strays into the state of a Rudra.
This is because the qualities of the result
Are the expanse in which abandonment and realization are perfected—
The great exhaustion of phenomena beyond the conceptual mind.
Thus those earlier experiences are merely signs of the path and its qualities
Not the actual attainment of the stages.
The Great Perfection, free from renunciation or attainment,
Is the ground in which all phenomena are liberated. Samaya.

Thus, among the many vital instructions of breath control11 and wind,
These are the profound quintessence.
The casket of the maroon-coloured expanse of the heart-treasure,
Marked with the symbolic scripts of blazing relics,12
The secret heart of the ḍākinīs, the treasury of space—
The storehouse where all the quintessential treasures are gathered,
Resounds with symbolic words, transformed into vajra melodies.
This is only meant for a few fortunate ones,
And no one else. Sealed with samaya.
Do not disclose it, except to those who are like your own heart.

Notes
- In the Tibetan text, certain passages are concealed by a terma mark. The meaning of these hidden words has been supplied in brackets, based on notes at the back of an edition of the First Dodrupchen's commentary published by Lama Jigme Namgyal. When these were shown to Khenpo Gyurme Dorje of Shechen, he confirmed that the oral transmission descending from Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche contains exactly the same words. See Lama Jigme Namgyal, rdzogs pa chen po snying thig gong 'og las/_rlung dang thig le'i rdzogs rim phyogs bsgrigs, pp. 199–200. ↑
- Lama Jigme Namgyal explains that ‘relaxing in the natural state’ (rnal bab) refers to relaxing your body, speech and mind, just dropping everything, like a corpse. ↑
- These are inhaling, filling, lightly pressing (zhilwa), and shooting (exhaling) like an arrow. ↑
- The explanation of the terma marks continues: 'The oral instruction is to unite the winds at the navel, then focus at the heart. With both the in-breath and out-breath, the [wind] dissolves into the syllable āḥ. Maṅgalam.' ↑
- Jigme Lingpa says in his Mountain Dharma (Richö): “My life-sustaining and downward-clearing winds merged into one and the great round vase with a hole in its base became visible to the eye. The common and extra-ordinary signs of the path manifested”. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche comments: “Even if you turn a pot that has only a very narrow aperture upside down, the water will not flow out of it. Likewise, when someone has totally mastered the containment of inner energies as Jigme Lingpa did, he will not lose his vital fluids.” ↑
- This refers to the illusory body. ↑
- Phowa, the transference of consciousness. ↑
- Parakāyapraveśa, grong ’jug. ↑
- Tib. Namshalma (gnam zhal ma). ↑
- These are the four qualities of the a-stroke. ↑
- Skt. prāṇāyāma, Tib.srog rtsol. ↑
- This could be a reference to one of the Seventeen Dzogchen Tantras, Blazing Relics. ↑
- The Tibetan has ‘three’ here. There are multiple interpretations of what ‘three’ refers to exactly, but Lama Jigme Namgyal says that it is best understood as referring to tsa-lung, trekchö and tögal. (Oral communication, 2025.) ↑
