ཡེ་ནས་གཞི་རྫོགས་ཆོས་སྐུའི་ཀློང༌། །

yené zhi dzok chökü long

In basic space where superficial darkness fades away;

སྐུ་གསུམ་ཡོངས་གྲོལ་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

ku sum yong drol jingyi lob

In the expanse of dharmakāya, the primordially perfect ground.9

ཚུལ་འདི་དད་པའི་སྤྲིན་གཞོན་གྱིས། །
བསྐུལ་ངོར་ཉི་མཁའ་ཡངས་པའི་མཁར། །
ཐུགས་རྗེ་བདུད་རྩིའི་སྤྲིན་ཕུང་ལས། །
འཛད་མེད་སིམ་བྱེད་ཅུང་སྤྲོས་སོ།།

Urged on by freshly formed clouds of faith
In the wide-open space of the sunlit sky,
From the billowed masses of compassion's nectar,
This undying breeze puffed forth.

Notes

  1. This prayer is untitled. "Undying Wind" is a phrase extracted from the colophon.
  2. pad+ma las 'brel rtsal (1291–1315)—Longchenpa's pre-incarnation who discovered the Khandro Nyingtik. Also a name used by Khenpo Ngawang Palzang, who belongs to the same line of incarnations.
  3. "To feel at home in meditation" loosely translates sgom pa goms par, more literally, "familiarity with meditation."
  4. ngag gi dbang po. "Lord of Speech." A name shared by Longchenpa and Khenpo Ngawang Palzang.
  5. "Expanse of freedom" loosely translates klong grol—more literally, "free expanse."
  6. ma bcos [g]sum ldan, "having three unaltered/uncontrived." This phrase appears in Longchenpa's Treasury of the Way of Abiding (gnas lugs mdzod), in the line ngo bo rang bzhin thugs rje ma bcos gsum, (klong chen rab 'byams dri med 'od zer, gnas lugs mdzod, 154) which might be read as "three uncontrived aspects of essence, nature, and responsiveness"—i.e., the three inalienable aspects, according to the Dzogchen system, that characterize the sugatagarbha, ultimate fruition, the ground of being, etc., Cf. Longchen Rabjam, Precious Treasury of the Way of Abiding (Richard Barron, trans), 41. Dan Martin locates the same line from an early fragment of the All-Creating King Tantra (kun byed rgyal po'i rgyud), though we do not find it in other witnesses of that text. See Martin, Dan, "The All Making King's Earliest Fragment," https://tibeto-logic.blogspot.com/2023/12/the-all-making-kings-earliest-fragment.html.
  7. "Immersion" here translates spyod pa, most often rendered as "conduct," as in the third stanza of the present text, as the first three stanzas evoke the themes of view, meditation, and conduct. The term also connotes epistemological "engagement" or phenomenological "immersion," which is evoked in the present stanza, where "conduct" does not quite work.
  8. In this stanza, both "vault" and "expanse" render klong which always connotes a sense of phenomenological vastness and so is often better translated in context rather than as a strict technical term. In this last line "striving to improve" renders gnyen po'i rtsol ba—lit. "antidotal effort," connoting effort to fix something that's wrong.
  9. Again, we opt for poetic synonyms, with "vastitude" and "basic space" both rendering dbyings in this stanza, and expanse for klong.
