A Prayer to the Vajra Seat in India
by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
kalzang namdren tong gi mi lobpé
To the sacred site where the thousand guides of this Fortunate Aeon
gopang dzé né dzamling sé tewar
Display the attainment of the state of no-more-learning,
tub chen shakyé gyalpö namtar gyi
The very centre of this world,
ré kha trawé zhing la solwa deb
Resplendent with the sacred traces of the Great Sage, King of the Śākyas, I offer my prayer.
ü gyur chang gi chökü chö dong ché
To the Buddha’s great dharmakāya reliquary stūpa at Bodhgayā,
changchub shing dang zhab kyi pemö jé
The Bodhi Tree, the imprints of his lotus feet,
tsenpé nangnyen lasok ngotsar gyi
The Buddha image bearing the major and minor marks, and all the rest—
ten chok duma zhuk la solwa deb
To this site of many marvellous, supreme supports, I offer my prayer.
namzhik jamchen chö kyi nyima yi
When Buddha Maitreya, the sun of Dharma,
dütsi gopar dangpor chewé tsé
First opens wide the gate to the deathless nectar,
khor gyi tokmar kyé né dreltsé kün
May I be born among the very first of his retinue,
gyalwa gyepé lam la zhukpar shok
And may all those connected with me set out on the path that delights the victorious ones.
dorjé pungpö yeshe tsalung tik
When the wisdom channels, winds, and essences within the vajra body
mishik dangmé tikler simpa lé
Dissolve into the indestructible luminous sphere,
nampa nyishü ngönjang chubpé né
The twenty aspects of awakening manifest.1
nang gi dorjé den la solwa deb
To this place,2 the inner vajra seat, I offer my prayer.
sangye rinchen zama tok chenpo
The great casket of buddha jewels,3
ngé sang chö nam malü jungwé né
The source from which all definitive, secret instructions arise without exception,
gyal kün yeshe nyingpo düpé dön
The meaning that encapsulates the wisdom-essence of all victorious ones—
ngönsum tokpé lam nga yongdzok shok
Through directly realizing this, may the five paths be completed in their entirety.
gyal kün yeshe chökü chö dong du
May I actualize this fortune and become one
yermé jukpé kalzang ngöngyur né
With the dharmakāya reliquary stūpa, the wisdom of all the victorious ones.
dzok min jangpa gyatsö tarchin té
May I perfect the vast ocean of completion, maturation, and purification,
ngotsar dzepé khakhyab dro drol shok
And through wondrous deeds, may I liberate all beings throughout space.
zab zhi trödral ösal dümajé
Profound and peaceful, free from complexity, uncompounded luminosity—4
namkün chokden zhönnu bumpa kur
The youthful vase body endowed with every supreme aspect,
khyepar druk gi ngal tso tobpé né
The place where comfort and ease are found through the six special features5—
tartuk dorjé den la solwa deb
To this ultimate vajra seat, I offer my prayer.
künjung trulpé dü tsok dé dangché
Having vanquished the hosts of māras together with their armies, the source of all delusion,
dorjé tabü tingdzin gyi chom né
Through the vajra-like samādhi,
tayé yönten dzokpé tob chü dak
May I attain the state of the supreme primordial Buddha,
dangpö sangye chok gi né sön shok
The lord of the ten powers, endowed with infinite, perfect qualities.
küntak trulpé münpa ying su sang
When the darkness of imputative delusion dissolves into basic space,
yeshe rigpé nangwa khakhyab dal
And the light of wisdom-awareness pervades the whole of of space,
zakmé yönten dzokpé pal tob né
Having attained the splendour of perfected, undefiled qualities,
drolwa druk gi trinlé ngöngyur shok
May the enlightened activity of sixfold liberation6 be made manifest.
This prayer was composed by the vagabond Maṅgalaṃ out of faith and devotion at a time when, through the excellent fortune of previous aspirations, he repeatedly forged the karmic connection of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations at the great sacred site of Vajrāsana. May it be accomplished in accordance with the prayer.

- The indestructible nature of the vajra body. ↑
- A reference to the syllables “e vaṃ,” which in the Hevajra Tantra (84000, Toh. 417, 2.3.4) are referred to as “a casket of buddha jewels.” ↑
- Lalitavistara Sūtra, 25.1. ↑
- 1) The fruition is superior to the ground (gzhi las 'phags pa); 2) it manifests in one's own experience (rang ngor snang ba); 3) it is discerning (bye brag phyed pa); 4) it is freed in the immediacy of that discernment (phyed thog tu grol ba); 5) it does not arise from anything else (gzhan las ma byung ba); 6) it abides in its own place (rang sar gnas pa). ↑
- Liberation through seeing, hearing, recollecting, touching, tasting, and wearing or otherwise experiencing objects blessed by the enlightened body, speech, and mind. ↑
