I. The Preliminaries

For all of you wishing to immerse yourselves in the meaning of simplicity, the principal duty is to worship the guru. To do this, you should sit down, in a solitary place, on a comfortable seat and assume the meditation posture.

Recitation Invocation

Beings are exhausted by the ways of saṃsāra; they are shackled by concepts of eternalism and nihilism—

pomé zhi dön rik té ösal lhenkyé kyi dzé mé

Right here and now, as we recognize the ineffable basic state,

rang zhal ngönsum tongwé ngödrub drub nyi kyi langtso

Bestow on us the wish-fulfilling blessing, the siddhi of seeing directly the enchanting face of natural clarity,

chir gar yizhin jowé jinlab ngön sum du tsol chik

The youthful maiden of the two accomplishments—bestow this, I pray!

Say that, and while maintaining innate natural radiance, recite the following mantra as much as you can:

om ah hung guru benza dhara sarva siddhi pala hung

oṃ āḥ hūṃ guru-vajradhara sarva-siddhi-phala hūṃ

Then, by reciting the prayer to the eighty-four mahāsiddhas as many times as you can, intensify your devotion.3

Receiving the Four Empowerments

To receive the four profound empowerments, first ardently recite the Fourfold ‘Manam’ Prayer:

ma namkha dang nyampé semchen tamché lama künkhyab chö kyi ku la solwa deb so

All mother sentient beings as infinite as space pray to the guru, the all-pervasive dharmakāya.

ma namkha dang nyampé semchen tamché lama dechen longchö dzokpé ku la solwa deb so

All mother sentient beings as infinite as space pray to the guru, the great blissful sambhogakāya.

ma namkha dang nyampé semchen tamché lama tukjé trulpé ku la solwa deb so

All mother sentient beings as infinite as space pray to the guru, the compassionate nirmāṇakāya.

ma namkha dang nyampé semchen tamché lama sangye rinpoche la solwa deb so

All mother sentient beings as infinite as space pray to the guru, the precious buddha.

Then say:

ahoyé, palden lama drenpé chömin mögü kyi tu lé

Ahoyé! Through the power of unfabricated devotion for the glorious guru,

tulzhuk nyam gyar barwé drub nyé naljor gyi tsok nam

This gathering of yogis whose accomplishment blazes as an array of yogic experiences

palden dorjé chang gi sang sum tiklé la tim ching

Dissolves into the bindus of glorious Vajradhara’s three secrets.

tsowö tralwé né né yönpa kyangma dang drelwé

From Vajradhara’s forehead, a stream of white bodhicitta

changsem karpö gyün jung rang gi tralwa la timpé

Connected to the lalanā on the left dissolves into my forehead.

lü kyi dribpa dak ching nangtong bumpé wang tob gyur

It purifies my physical obscurations and bestows the vase empowerment of empty appearance.

tsowö drinpé né lé yepa roma dang drelwé

From Vajradhara’s throat, a stream of red bodhicitta

changsem marpö gyün jung rang gi drinpa la timpé

Connected to the rasanā on the right dissolves into my throat.

ngak gi dribpa dak ching dechen sangwé wang tob

It purifies my verbal obscurations and bestows the secret empowerment of great bliss.

tso wo mintsam né né awa dhuti dang drelwé

From the middle of Vajradhara’s eyebrows, a stream of mixed bodhicitta

changsem drepé gyün jung rang gi mintsam su timpé

Connected to the avadhūtī dissolves into the middle of my eyebrows.

yi kyi dribpa dak ching sherab yeshe kyi wang tob

It purifies my mental obscurations and bestows the wisdom-knowledge empowerment.

Then Vajradhara speaks with his inexpressible self-resounding nāda:

zhi né machö neluk yené lhündrub kyi rangzhin

“When you can let be, joyfully, without artifice, within the basic nature,

tamal rang luk ngang du zomé dukpa ru zhak na

The uncontrived natural state, the spontaneously-present primordial nature, the ordinary mind,

kyechi takché mepa namkha tabu yi long du

In the space-like expanse, free from birth and death, permanence and annihilation,

pogyur drigang dralwé chökü daknyi du gyur ro

You will become sovereign of the dharmakāya, free from change and instability.”

zhé sung gongpé drö té rang dang nyimé du timpé

Thus he transmits the warmth of his realization4 and dissolves inseparably within me,

trödral ösal chenpö daknyi ngönsum du tongwé

And I see directly the natural state of great, luminous simplicity.

nangsi dakpa rabjam lha yi khorlo ru gyur chik

May all phenomenal appearance become the divine mandala of boundless purity!

Say that, and then maintain the continuity of meditative equipoise. In post-meditation, take all appearances and sounds onto the path of dharmakāya.

Dedicating the Merit

When receiving the blessings of the eighty-four mahāsiddhas, I, the one by the name of Jampa, had a vision in which the ḍākinī Kadalī from Siṅgala bestowed siddhis upon me. Later I put what the ḍākinī had given to me into writing using words that are easy to understand. May it be a cause for those with the karmic fortune to attain the state of unity! Siddhirastu bhavantu! Sarva maṅgalaṃ! Virtue! Virtue! Virtue!

  4. This phrase, “transmits the warmth of his realization” means that Vajradhara is looking upon one with intense, unwavering affection and love like a mother gazing down on her newborn child. Oral clarification by Phakchok Rinpoche.
  5. The Gaṇḍavyūha or ‘Stem Array’—the forty-fifth and final chapter of the Buddhāvataṃsaka—tells the story of Youthful Sudhana’s quest for awakening through encounters with a variety of spiritual teachers. By pleasing each of his teachers Sudhana progresses swiftly along the path.

Vajrayāna Buddhism places restrictions on the reading and practice of certain texts, which are intended only for those who have received the requisite empowerments, transmissions and instructions.
