Eight Vidyādharas’ Blessings

༄༅། །རིག་འཛིན་བརྒྱད་ཀྱི་བྱིན་དབབ་པ་ནི།

Descent of Blessings of the Eight Vidyādharas¹

ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་ཐམས་ཅད་མཁའ་ཁྱབ་ཏུ་སད་པར་གྱུར།

yeshe kyi khorlo tamché khakhyab tu separ gyur

All the primordial wisdom maṇḍalas awaken in the sky, filling it completely.

ཨཱོྃ་ཧཱུྃ་ཨ་ལ་ལ་ཧོཿ བྷ་ག་ཝཱན་ས་མ་ཡ་ཧོཿ ས་མ་ཡ་སྟྭཾ།

om hung a la la ho | bhagavan samaya ho | samaya tom

oṃ hūṃ a la la hoḥ | bhagavān samaya hoḥ | samaya sthaṃ

རོལ་མོ་དབྱངས་ཀྱི་འགྱུར་བ་དང་བཅས།

Accompanied by music, melodiously chant the following:

ཧཱུྃ། བསྐལ་པ་སྲིད་པའི་དང་པོ་ལ། །

hung, kalpa sipé dangpo la

Hūṃ! At the beginning of this aeon—the dawn of existence—

བདག་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཧེ་རུ་ཀས། །

dakmé dorjé heruké

When the heruka of the view of selflessness

གཟུང་འཛིན་རུ་ཏྲ་བསྒྲལ་བའི་ཚེ། །

zungdzin rudra dralwé tsé

Liberated the rudra of duality

ཚོགས་བརྒྱད་དག་པའི་དུར་ཁྲོད་བྱུང་། །

tsok gyé dakpé durtrö jung

The eight pure consciousnesses arose as charnel grounds.

ཁོག་པ་གྲུ་བཞི་སྒོ་བཞི་པ། །

khokpa dru zhi go zhipa

The four parts of Rudra’s body became the four doors

བདེ་གཤེགས་བཞུགས་པའི་གཞལ་མེད་ཁང་། །

deshek zhukpé zhalmé khang

Of the palace where the bliss-gone ones abide.

ཕུང་པོ་ཁམས་དང་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་རྣམས། །

pungpo kham dang kyemché nam

Bless the aggregates, elements and sense sources

གདན་གསུམ་ངོ་བོར་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

den sum ngowor jin pob chik

As the essence of the three seats!²

ཡུལ་གྱི་མིང་ནི་འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་། །

yul gyi ming ni dzambüling

The name of the place is Jambudvīpa.

 

ཤར་ཕྱོགས་དུར་ཁྲོད་བསིལ་བའི་ཚལ། །

sharchok durtrö silwé tsal

In the east³ lies the charnel ground Cool Grove⁴

རུ་ཏྲའི་སྙིང་དང་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré nying dang zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s heart is found.

གླང་མགོ་དཀར་པོ་གྲི་ཐོད་འཛིན། །

lang go karpo dri tö dzin

The local protector has the face of an elephant, is white in colour and holds a knife and a skull-cup.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་དབང་པོ་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཅན། །

chokkyong wangpo dorjé chen

The directional guardian is Indra, holding a vajra.

ཀླུ་དབང་མཐའ་ཡས་སྦྲུལ་མགོ་གདེངས། །

luwang tayé drul go deng

The nāga king is Ananta, and he has serpent heads.

ཆུ་སྤྲིན་དཀར་ལ་ལྗོན་ཤིང་སེར། །

chu trin kar la jönshing ser

The river and clouds are white, and the charnel tree is yellow.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་ཀེའུ་རཱི་མ། །

né ma chenmo ké'u ri ma

The great protectress is Gaurī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་བདེ་བྱེད་བརྩེགས་པ་ནས། །

chörten dé jé tsekpa né

From the stūpa Blissful Mound—⁵

ཡང་དག་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

yangdak drubpé rigdzin ni

Hūṃkāra, vidyādhara who accomplished Yangdak,

ཧཱུྃ་ཆེན་ཀཱ་རས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

hungchen karé jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། ལྷོ་ཕྱོགས་དུར་ཁྲོད་ཁུ་བྱུག་ཚལ། །

hung, lhochok durtrö khujuk tsal

Hūṃ! In the south lies the charnel ground Cuckoo Grove

རུ་ཏྲའི་ལག་གཡས་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré lak yé zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s right hand is found.

མ་ཧེའི་གདོང་ཅན་སྦྲུལ་ཞགས་བསྣམས། །

mahé dongchen drul zhak nam

The local protector has the face of a buffalo and holds a serpent lasso.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་གཤིན་རྗེ་བེ་ཅོན་ཅན། །

chokkyong shinjé bechön chen

The directional guardian is Yama, holding a club.

ཀླུ་དབང་འཇོག་པོ་སྤྲིན་སྔོ་སྐྱ། །

luwang jokpo trin ngokya

The nāga king is Takṣaka. The clouds are grey,

ཆུ་ཀླུང་རླབས་ཅན་ལྗོན་ཤིང་ལྗང་། །

chulung labchen jönshing jang

The river turbulent, and the charnel tree is green.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་ཙཽ་རཱི་མ། །

né ma chenmo tsaurima

The great protectress is Caurī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་རིན་ཆེན་འོད་འཕྲོ་ནས། །

chörten rinchen ö tro né

From the stūpa Blazing Jewel—

འཇམ་དཔལ་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

jampal drubpé rigdzin ni

Mañjuśrīmitra, vidyādhara who accomplished Mañjuśrī,

མཉྫུ་མི་ཏྲས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

mandzumitré jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། ནུབ་ཕྱོགས་དུར་ཁྲོད་པདྨ་བརྩེགས། །

hung, nubchok durtrö pema tsek

Hūṃ! In the west lies the charnel ground Lotus Mound

རུ་ཏྲའི་མཚན་མ་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré tsenma zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s phallus is found.

ཆུ་སྲིན་གདོང་ཅན་ལ་ལི་ཧ། །

chusin dongchen la li ha

The local protector Laliha has the face of a sea-monster.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་ཆུ་ལྷ་ཀླུ་དུང་སྐྱོང་། །

chokkyong chulha lu dungkyong

The directional guardian is the water god Varuṇa, and the nāga king is Saṅkhapāla.

སྤྲིན་ཆེན་སྒྲ་སྒྲོགས་ཆུ་ཤིང་དམར། །

trin chen dra drok chushing mar

Billowing clouds rumble with thunder, and the river and the charnel tree are red.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་པྲ་མོ་ཧ། །

né ma chenmo pramoha

The great protectress is Pramohā.

མཆོད་རྟེན་གཟི་འོད་འབར་བ་ནས། །

chörten zi ö barwa né

From the stūpa Majestic Blazing Light—

རྟ་མགྲིན་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

tamdrin drubpé rigdzin ni

Nāgārjuna-garbha, vidyādhara who accomplished Hayagrīva,

ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་སྙིང་པོས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

ludrub nyingpö jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། བྱང་ཕྱོགས་དུར་ཁྲོད་ལངྐ་བརྩེགས། །

hung, jangchok durtrö langkatsek

Hūṃ! In the north lies the charnel ground Laṅka Mound

རུ་ཏྲའི་རྐང་གཡོན་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré kang yön zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s left leg is found.

རྟ་གདོང་དུད་ཁ་ཆུང་མར་བཅས། །

ta dong dükha chungmar ché

The local protector has the face of a horse, is grey in colour and is accompanied by his consort.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་གནོད་སྦྱིན་ཀླུ་སྟོབས་རྒྱུ། །

chokkyong nöjin lu tob gyu

The directional guardian is a yakṣa, the nāga king is Karkoṭaka.

ཆུ་ཀླུང་མྱོས་དང་སྤྲིན་ལྗང་འཁྲུགས། །

chulung nyö dang trin jang truk

The river is raging; the green clouds rumble.

ལྗོན་ཤིང་ཨ་སུ་ཏ་ན་མཛེས། །

jönshing asutana dzé

The beautiful charnel tree is called Asutana.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་བེ་ཏ་ལཱི། །

né ma chenmo bé ta li

The great protectress is Vetālī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་རང་བྱུང་བདེ་ཆེན་ནས། །

chörten rangjung dechen né

From the stūpa Naturally Arisen Great Bliss—

ཕུར་པ་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

purpa drubpé rigdzin ni

Prabhāhasti, vidyādhara who accomplished Kīlaya,

པྲ་བྷ་ཧསྟིས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

prabhahasti jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། ཤར་ལྷོ་དུར་ཁྲོད་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་བརྩེགས། །

hung, sharlho durtrö lhündrub tsek

Hūṃ! In the south-east lies the charnel ground Spontaneously Accomplished Mound

རུ་ཏྲའི་ནང་ཁྲོལ་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré nangtrol zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s intestines are found.

ར་གདོང་ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་མེ་ལྷ་སེར། །

ra dong chokkyong melha ser

The local protector has the face of a goat. The directional guardian is Agni, yellow in colour.

ཀླུ་ཆེན་པདྨ་ནོར་བུ་འཛིན། །

luchen pema norbu dzin

The great nāga king holds a lotus and jewel.

ཆུ་ཀླུང་ངུར་བྱེད་སྤྲིན་དམར་སེར། །

chulung ngur jé trin marser

The river is raging, the clouds are orange.

ལྗོན་ཤིང་ཁྲོ་བོ་གེལ་པའི་སྟབས། །

jönshing trowo gelpé tab

The charnel tree appears wrathful and crooked.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་པུཀྐ་སཱི། །

né ma chenmo pukkasi

The great protectress is Pukkasī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་ཀེ་འུ་ཏི་ཤན་ནས། །

chörten ké u tishen né

From the stūpa Ke’u Tishen—

མ་མོ་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

mamo drubpé rigdzin ni

Dhanasaṃskṛta, vidyādhara who accomplished the mātṛkās,

དྷ་ན་སཾ་སྐྲྀས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

dhanasamskri jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། ལྷོ་ནུབ་དུར་ཁྲོད་མ་ཧཱ་གུ་ཧྱ། །

hung, lhonub durtrö maha guhy

Hūṃ! In the south-west lies the charnel ground Mahāguhya

རུ་ཏྲའི་མགོ་བོ་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré gowo zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s head is found.

ཁ་དོག་སྔོན་པོ་མི་ལ་ཞོན། །

khadok ngönpo mi la zhön

The local protector is blue in colour and rides a human.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་འབོད་སྒྲོགས་ཀླུ་པད་ཆེན། །

chokkyong bö drok lu pé chen

The directional guardian is Rāvaṇa, the nāga king is Mahāpadma.

སྤྲིན་སེར་ག་ན་ཆུ་ཀླུང་དམར། །

trin ser gana chulung mar

The ‘gana’ clouds are yellow, and the river is red.

ལྗོན་ཤིང་ཤཱནྟིཾ་ཨུ་པ་ལ། །

jönshing shanting upala

The charnel tree is called Śāntim Upala.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་གསྨ་རཱི། །

né ma chenmo gasmari

The great protectress is Ghasmarī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་ཆེན་པོ་ཀ་ནི་ནས། །

chörten chenpo kaniné

From the stūpa Kanika—

ཡོན་ཏན་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

yönten drubpé rigdzin ni

Vimalamitra, vidyādhara who accomplished Amṛtakuṇḍalin,

བི་མ་མི་ཏྲས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

bimamitré jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། ནུབ་བྱང་དུར་ཁྲོད་ཧེ་ཆེན་པོ། །

hung, nubjang durtrö hé chenpo

Hūṃ! In the north-west lies the charnel ground Great Hé

རུ་ཏྲའི་ལག་གཡོན་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré lak yön zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s left arm is found.

ཤ་བའི་གདོང་ཅན་འཕྱེ་བོའི་ཚུལ། །

shawé dongchen chewö tsul

The local protector has the face of a deer and is crippled.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་རླུང་ལྷ་ཀླུ་ནོར་རྒྱས། །

chokkyong lung lha lu norgyé

The directional guardian is the wind god Vāyu and the nāga king Vāsuki.

སྤྲིན་ཆེན་ཆར་འབེབས་ཆུ་ཀླུང་ནག །

trin chen charbeb chulung nak

Rain pours from massive clouds, and the river is black.

ལྗོན་ཤིང་ཛ་ལ་ནག་པོ་ལ། །

jönshing dzala nakpo la

The tree is called Black Jala.

གནས་མ་དུར་ཁྲོད་བདག་མོ་གནས། །

né ma durtrö dakmo né

The great protectress is Śmaśānī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་རང་བྱུང་ཀུ་མ་ནས། །

chörten rangjung ku ma né

From the stūpa Naturally Arisen Kuma—

མཆོད་བསྟོད་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

chötö drubpé rigdzin ni

Guhyacandra, vidyādhara who accomplished Offering and Praise,

གུ་ཧྱ་ཙཎྜས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

guhya tsendé jin pob chik

ཧཱུྃ། བྱང་ཤར་དུར་ཁྲོད་ལོ་ཀ་ན། །

hung, jangshar durtrö loka na

Hūṃ! In the north-east lies the charnel ground Lokana

རུ་ཏྲའི་རྐང་གཡས་ཞིང་སྐྱོང་ནི། །

rudré kang yé zhingkyong ni

Where Rudra’s right leg is found.

ཅེ་སྤྱང་གདོང་ཅན་རྩེ་གསུམ་འཆང་། །

ché chang dongchen tsesum chang

The local protector has the face of a jackal, is white in colour and holds a knife and a skull-cup.

ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་དབང་ལྡན་ཀླུ་རིགས་ལྡན། །

chokkyong wangden lu rikden

The directional guardian is Īśāna and the nāga king Jātya.

ཆུ་ཀླུང་ནག་པོ་སྤྲིན་ཉ་ཅན། །

chulung nakpo trin nyachen

The river is black, and the clouds rumble.

ལྗོན་ཤིང་ཧ་ལ་ཀཱ་ལ་ལ། །

jönshing hala kala la

The charnel tree is called Halakāla.

གནས་མ་ཆེན་མོ་ཙཎྜ་ལཱི། །

né ma chenmo tsendali

The great protectress is Caṇḍālī.

མཆོད་རྟེན་གོ་མ་ས་ལ་ནས། །

chörten gomasala né

From the stūpa Gomasāla—

དྲག་སྔགས་གྲུབ་པའི་རིག་འཛིན་ནི། །

drakngak drubpé rigdzin ni

Śāntigarbha, vidyādhara who accomplished Fierce Mantra,

ཤཱནྟིཾ་གར་བྷས་བྱིན་ཕོབ་ཅིག །

shanting garbhé jin pob chik

Shower down your blessing!

ཨཱོྃ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ་བཛྲ་གུ་རུ་པདྨ་ཐོད་ཕྲེང་རྩལ། བཛྲ་ས་མ་ཡ་སིདྡྷི་ཕ་ལ་ཧཱུྃ་ཨཱཿ

om ah hung benza guru pema tötreng tsal | benza samaya siddhi pala hung ah

oṃ āḥ hūṃ vajra-guru padma tötreng tsal | vajra samaya siddhi phala hūṃ āḥ

ཞེས་ཐོད་ཕྲེང་རྩལ་གྱི་ཛཔ྄་དབྱངས་བཟླ་བ་དང་བཅས་བྱིན་དབབ་མཐར།

At the end of the descent of blessing, melodiously chant the Mighty Skull-Garland’s⁶ mantra. Finally, gather the blessings with:

ཧཱུྃ་ཧཱུྃ་ཧཱུྃ་གིས་བྱིན་བསྡུས་པས། 

hung hung hung

hūṃ hūṃ hūṃ

ནམ་མཁའ་གང་བའི་ལྷ་ཚོགས་ཐམས་ཅད་བདག་གནས་ཡོ་བྱད་རྣམས་ལ་ཐིམ་པས།

namkha gangwé lhatsok tamché dak né yojé nam la timpé

All the deities who fill the sky dissolve into myself, the place and the materials,

སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས་མི་ཟད་པ་རྒྱན་གྱི་འཁོར་ལོར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབས་པར་གྱུར།

ku sung tuk mizepa gyen gyi khorlor jingyi labpar gyur

And bless everything as the inexhaustible wheel of ornaments of the body, speech, and mind.

2. ↑ The deities of the three seats, often referred to as the maṇḍala of the three seats (gdan gsum dkyil ‘khor), are: 1) the tathāgatas residing in the aggregates (skandha) and elements (dhātu), 2) the male and female bodhisattvas residing in the sense fields (āyatana), and 3) male and female wrathful deities residing in the limbs (aṅga).

There are many such lists of charnel grounds, both in the Old and New Translation Schools, often with slight differences in names and appearance. It is common for each charnel ground to have its own associated tree, yakṣa, directional guardian, nāga king, cloud formation, mountain, and stūpa. In this text we also find the eight Great Ladies such as Gaurī and the eight vidyādharas such as Hūṃkāra associated with a charnel ground.
