Notes

  1. In this enumeration the asuras, often counted separately, are included within the god realm, thus counting five instead of six realms.
  2. The spontaneously accomplishing activity is added to the standard list of four enlightened activities.
  3. Dhanakośa.
  4. A reference to the practice of tummo (gtum mo) or inner heat.
  5. Dzogchen; Mahāmudrā and Madhyamaka.
  6. The supports of body, speech and mind.
  7. That is the four vidyādhara levels and the implied accomplishment thereof.
  8. In the Kālacakra (Wheel of Time) tradition, reality and practice are categorised into three interrelated dimensions—outer, inner, and other. The outer is the universe, the inner is the subtle body/mind that mirrors that universe, and the other is the practice and enlightened state.
  9. The sixfold greatness of the Early Translations: (1) the benefactors who brought the teachings, (2) the location of translation, (3) the lotsāwas who translated them, (4) the paṇḍitas who clarified them for the translators, (5) the offerings made, and (6) the teachings themselves.
