Eight Treasures of Self-Confidence Aspiration
༄༅། །སྤོབས་པའི་གཏེར་བརྒྱད་གྲོལ་བའི་སྨོན་ལམ་ཕན་བདེའི་ས་བོན།
The Seed of Benefit and Happiness
An Aspiration for Unlocking the Eight Treasures of Self-Confidence

བླ་མ་འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
lama jampé yang la chaktsal lo
Homage to the guru, Mañjughoṣa!
བདག་གི་སྐྱེ་དང་ཚེ་རབས་ཏུ། །
dak gi kyé dang tserab tu
In all my future births, through the succession of all my lives,
བླ་མ་མགོན་པོ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་ཀྱིས། །
lama gönpo jamyang kyi
May my guru, the protector Mañjughoṣa
བརྩེ་བས་རྗེས་བཟུང་བྱིན་རླབས་ནས། །
tsewé jezung jinlab né
Bless me with his loving care,
རླབས་ཆེན་སྤྱོད་པ་རྒྱ་མཚོ་དང་། །
lab chen chöpa gyatso dang
That I may enact vast and magnificent conduct,
གཟུངས་དང་སྤོབས་པའི་སྒོམ་སྒྲུབ་དང་། །
zung dang pobpé gom drub dang
Accomplish meditation that yields perfect recall and eloquence,1
བདེ་གཤེགས་རྒྱ་མཚོ་མཆོད་པར་ཤོག །
deshek gyatso chöpar shok
And honor the ocean of sugatas.
དུས་འདི་ནས་བཟུང་བྱང་ཆུབ་བར། །
dü di né zung changchub bar
From now until I attain enlightenment,
མཚུངས་མེད་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་དང་མཇལ། །
tsungmé geweshé dang jal
May I meet with peerless spiritual teachers,
མདོ་སྔགས་བསྟན་ལ་ཐོས་བསམ་དོན། །
do ngak ten la tö samdön
And may the treasure of recollection—2
བརྗེད་པ་མེད་པ་དྲན་པའི་གཏེར། །
jepa mepa drenpé ter
Never forgetting the meanings gleaned from studying and contemplating the sūtras and tantras—
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
Arise authentically in my mind stream.
ཟབ་དང་རྒྱ་ཆེའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ལ། །
zab dang gyaché chö nam la
The treasure of intelligence is incomparable, unerring vision
མ་ནོར་འགལ་དང་འབྲེལ་སྤྱོད་པའི། །
manor gal dang drel chöpé
Of potential contradictions and interconnections
མཚུངས་མེད་སྣང་བ་བློ་གྲོས་གཏེར། །
tsungmé nangwa lodrö ter
In the teachings on the profound and the vast.3
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག། །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream!
མདོ་རྒྱུད་རྣམས་ནས་ལེགས་བསྟན་པའི། །
dogyü nam né lek tenpé
The treasure of realization is to perfectly actualize
དོན་གྱི་རྣམ་པ་མ་ལུས་པ། །
dön gyi nampa malüpa
Every aspect of the meanings
ལེགས་པར་རྟོགས་པ་རྟོགས་པའི་གཏེར། །
lekpar tokpa tokpé ter
Of the excellent teachings of sūtra and tantra.
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream!
སྔོན་ཆད་ཐོས་དང་བསམ་པ་ཡིས། །
ngönché tö dang sampa yi
The treasure of recall is to never forget,
དོན་རྣམས་ཡིད་ལ་རབ་འདྲིས་ནས། །
dön nam yi la rab dri né
Once they have penetrated the mind,
བསྐྱུད་པ་མེད་པ་གཟུངས་གཏེར། །
kyüpa mepa zung ter
The meanings gleaned from learning and contemplation.
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream!
གདུལ་བའི་ཁམས་དབང་བསམ་པ་བཞིན། །
dulwé kham wang sampa zhin
The treasure of eloquence is to be able to explain the holy teachings
པོད་རྒྱན་ཇི་ལྟར་མཚམས་པ་ཡི། །
pö gyen jitar tsampa yi
As they are written in the volumes of ornamental literature,4
དམ་ཆོས་འདོམ་པ་སྤོབས་པའི་གཏེར། །
damchö dompa pobpé ter
While adapting them to the inclinations, capacities, and mentalities of beings to be tamed.
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream!
དམ་ཆོས་རིན་ཆེན་མཛོད་ལྟ་བུ། །
damchö rinchen dzö tabu
The treasure of Dharma is to clear the way
འཆད་ཉན་སྒོམ་པ་སུན་འབྱིན་ནས། །
chenyen gompa sünjin né
Through teaching, studying, and meditating,
རིག་པས་སྲུང་བ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་གཏེར། །
rigpé sungwa chö kyi ter
Protecting the holy Dharma, like a trove of jewels, with vidyā.5
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག། །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream!
དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་གྱི་རིགས་རྒྱུན་ནི། །
könchok sum gyi rik gyün ni
The treasure of unsurpassable bodhicitta—
མི་ཉམས་འཕེལ་ཕྱིར་སེམས་བསྐྱེད་པ། །
mi nyam pel chir semkyepa
Is to inspire yourself toward the goal that the lineage of the Three Jewels
བླ་མེད་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་ཀྱི་གཏེར། །
lamé changchub sem kyi ter
Never declines but flourishes.
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream!
ཐེག་པ་རྣམས་ལས་རིམ་བཞིན་དུ། །
tekpa nam lé rimzhin du
The stages of the yānas
ཟབ་ལས་ཆེས་ཟབ་སྐྱེ་བ་མེད། །
zab lé ché zab kyewamé
Open unto the profoundest of all profundities: what is unborn.
མཉམ་པའི་དོན་རིགས་བཟོད་པའི་གཏེར། །
nyampé dön rik zöpé ter
The treasure of acceptance is pure awareness of the meaning of equalness.
ཇི་བཞིན་རྒྱུད་ལ་སྐྱེ་བར་ཤོག །
jizhin gyü la kyewar shok
May it arise authentically in my mind stream.
ཟབ་མོའི་སྤོབས་པ་གཏེར་བརྒྱད་ཀྱིས། །
zabmö pobpa ter gyé kyi
May these profound eight treasures of self-confidence
འགྲོ་བའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་སེལ་བ་དང། །
drowé dukngal selwa dang
Clear away the suffering of beings,
བདེ་བཤེགས་སྲས་བཅས་མཆོད་པ་དང། །
dé shek sé ché chöpa dang
Honor the sugatas and bodhisattvas,
ཡི་དམ་ལྷ་མཆོག་མཉེས་པར་ཤོག། །
yidam lha chok nyepar shok
And delight the supreme yidam deity.
བླ་མའི་བཀའ་དྲིན་འཁོར་བ་དང། །
lamé kadrin khorwa dang
May I repay my guru's kindness,
བདུད་ཀྱི་པུང་རྣམས་གཞོམ་པ་དང། །
dü kyi pung nam zhompa dang
May the legions of māra be vanquished,
རྒྱལ་སྲས་སྤྱོད་ལ་རང་བྱན་ཚུད། །
gyalsé chö la rang jen tsü
May I master the conduct of the buddhas and bodhisattvas,
རྫོགས་སྨིན་སྦྱང་བ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཤོག །
dzok min jangwa tarchin shok
And may I bring completion, ripening, and refinement to consummation.6
རྫོགས་སངས་རྒྱས་དང་དེ་སྲས་ཀུན། །
dzok sanggyé dang dé sé kün
When I meet the perfect buddhas and their descendants,
མཇལ་བས་མཉེས་བྱས་ཆོས་ཉན་ནས། །
jalwé nyé jé chö nyen né
May I please them and listen to their teachings.
འགྲོ་བའི་ཕན་བདེ་བསྒྲུབ་ནས་ནི། །
drowé pendé drub né ni
May I then accomplish beings' benefit and happiness,
བསྟན་ལ་བྱ་བ་བྱེད་པར་ཤོག །
ten la jawa jepar shok
And work in service of the teachings.
མཐར་ཐུག་བླ་མ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་དང། །
tartuk lama jamyang dang
May I awaken in magnificent inseparability
དབྱེར་མེད་ཆེན་པོར་སངས་རྒྱས་ནས། །
yermé chenpor sangye né
With the ultimate guru, Mañjughoṣa,
གང་འདུལ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་ཕྲིན་ལས་ཀྱིས། །
gang dul trulpé trinlé kyi
And through miraculous enlightened activity that tames who needs to be tamed,
མཁའ་མཉམ་འགྲོ་རྣམས་དོན་བྱེད་ཤོག །
khanyam dro nam dönjé shok
May I act for the benefit of beings, who are equal to space!
ཚུལ་འདི་དད་པས་བསྐུལ་བའི་ངོར། །
རྨོངས་པའི་བཙུན་ཆུང་སྙོམ་ལས་ཅན། །
ལས་ཀྱི་རྡོ་རྗེས་གང་ཤར་གྱིས། །
རེ་འདོད་ཡི་གེའི་ལམ་དུ་བྱས།
In response to a sincere request,
The lazy, ignorant young monk,
Lekyi Dorje set down some wishes,
Based on whatever came to mind.

- ↑ Eloquence here renders spobs pa, which is the same term found in the title of the eightfold set, where we prefer "self-confidence." The Tibetan term connotes both, so we use "self-confidence" for the whole set and "eloquence" for the particular treasure related to verbal skill.
- ↑ "Treasure of recollection" (dran pa) has some overlap with the "treasure of perfect recall" (gzungs). Both relate to memory, but "recollection" connotes knowledge that is "ready-at-hand" to apply in situations, whereas "recall" (Skt. dhāraṇī) is more of the special power of perfect memory.
- ↑ This refers to the teachings on “profound view” associated with Nāgārjuna, and the teachings on “vast action” associated with Asaṅga.
- ↑ "Ornamental literature" (pod rgyan), refers to the complex commentarial literature that is inaccessible to non-specialists.
- ↑ We use the Sanskrit form, since the whole range of its meanings is at play here; that is, exoteric [scientific] knowledge and esoteric pure awareness. Primarily the former but also the latter.
