༄༅། །ཆོས་རྒྱལ་ཆེན་པོའི་བསྟོད་པ་གངས་ཅན་མ་ཞེས་བྱ་བ་བཞུགས་སོ། །

Snowy Lands: Praises to the Great Dharma Emperor Tri Songdetsen

གངས་ཅན་འགྲོ་བ་ཐབས་ཀྱིས་གདུལ་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །

gangchen drowa tab kyi duljé chir

To tame the people of the Snowy Land

རྒྱལ་སྲས་ཐུ་བོ་རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས། །

gyalsé tuwo jetsün jampé yang

The foremost bodhisattva, Noble Mañjuśrī,

བོད་ཡུལ་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཚུལ་དུ་ལེགས་སྣང་བ། །

böyul gyalpö tsul du lek nangwa

You gracefully appeared in the form of Tibet’s emperor —

ཁྲི་སྲོང་ལྡེའུ་བཙན་ཞབས་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

trisong detsen zhab la chaktsal tö

Tri Songdetsen, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

ཉི་ཟླ་ཟུང་འདྲའི་མཁན་སློབ་རྣམ་གཉིས་སོགས། །

nyida zung dré khen lob nam nyi sok

You brought the Master and Abbot, like sun and moon, together,

རྒྱ་གར་པཎ་གྲུབ་བོད་ཀྱི་ལོ་ཙཱ་བ། །

gyagar pendrub bö kyi lotsawa

Along with Indian paṇḍitas and translators from Tibet.

གངས་ཅན་ཕན་བདེའི་བྱེད་པོ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ། །

gangchen pendé jepo trulpé ku

Destined emanation for the benefit and happiness of Tibetans —

རྣམ་མང་བསྡུ་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

nam mang duwar dzé la chaktsal tö

Gatherer of Many, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

རིག་པའི་གནས་དང་མདོ་རྒྱུད་བསྟན་བཅོས་གཞུང༌། །

rigpé né dang dogyü tenchö zhung

Commissioning and checking the unerring translations

མ་ནོར་བསྒྱུར་ཞུས་གཏན་ལ་ཕབ་མཛད་ཅིང༌། །

manor gyur zhü ten la pab dzé ching

Of all the fields of knowledge, the sūtras, tantras, and commentaries,

བཤད་སྒྲུབ་བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་རབ་ཏུ་བསྒྲེངས། །

shedrub tenpé gyaltsen rabtu dreng

Gallantly you raised the victory banner of learning and practising the teachings —

མངའ་བདག་ཆེན་པོ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

ngadak chenpo khyé la chaktsal tö

Grand Sovereign, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

མཐའ་བཞིའི་རྒྱལ་ཁམས་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས་དབང་དུ་བསྡུས། །

ta zhi gyalkham tob kyi wang du dü

You brought kingdoms of all the four directions under your control,

གཙུག་ལག་ཁང་དང་སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས་ཀྱི་རྟེན། །

tsuklakhang dang ku sung tuk kyi ten

Constructed a temple with supports of enlightened body, speech, and mind,

མདོ་སྔགས་འཛིན་པའི་སྡེ་གཉིས་བོད་དུ་བཀོད། །

do ngak dzinpé dé nyi bö du kö

And entrusted Tibet with the twofold collection of sūtra and mantra —

བོད་ཡུལ་སྐྱོང་མཛད་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

böyul kyong dzé khyé la chaktsal tö

Protector of Tibet, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

སྣ་ཚོགས་ཐབས་ཀྱིས་ཆོས་སྲིད་ཟུང་དུ་སྐྱོང༌། །

natsok tab kyi chösi zung du kyong

By various means you unified both government and dharma,

བཀའ་བཙན་སྲོལ་བཟང་རྒྱལ་ཁམས་བདེ་ལ་བཀོད། །

ka tsen sol zang gyalkham dé la kö

Securing the empire’s well-being under the order of tradition excellent.

མངའ་བདག་ཚངས་པ་ལྷ་ཡི་མེ་ཏོག་ཅེས། །

ngadak tsangpa lha yi metok ché

Your pleasing name, “Brahma’s Divine Flower,” spread throughout the world —

སྙན་པས་ས་སྟེང་ཁྱབ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

nyenpé sateng khyab la chaktsal tö

Emperor, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

ཆེ་མཆོག་བདུད་རྩིས་གྲུབ་པ་མངོན་དུ་གྱུར། །

chemchok dütsi drubpa ngön du gyur

Accomplishing the supreme amṛta above all others,

ཏིང་འཛིན་གཡོ་མེད་དགོངས་པའི་རྩལ་ཆེན་རྫོགས། །

tingdzin yomé gongpé tsal chen dzok

Perfecting the great potency of unwavering samādhi,

ཚད་མ་ལ་སོགས་ལེགས་བཤད་བསྟན་བཅོས་སྤེལ། །

tsema lasok lek shé tenchö pel

You caused authentic knowledge, elegant speech and commentaries to flourish —

ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

chö kyi gyalpo khyé la chaktsal tö

Dharma King, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

སངས་རྒྱས་ལས་ཀྱང་ཆེས་དཀོན་གསང་སྔགས་ཀྱི། །

sangye lé kyang ché kön sang ngak kyi

Through the pith instructions and treatises of the secret mantra,

གཞུང་ལུགས་རྣམས་དང་དེ་ཡི་གདམས་ངག་གིས། །

zhungluk nam dang dé yi damngak gi

Rarer even than the appearance of a buddha,

བྷོ་ཊའི་ཡུལ་འདི་ཨོ་ཌཱི་ཡཱ་ན་དང༌། །

bhoté yul di o di ya na dang

You made this land of Tibet equal to Uḍḍiyāna:

མཚུངས་པར་མཛད་པ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

tsungpar dzepa khyé la chaktsal tö

To you I offer homage and praise.

 

དབྱིངས་ཀྱི་མཁའ་འགྲོས་རྒྱས་བཏབ་ཟབ་གསང་ཆོས། །

ying kyi khandrö gyé tab zabsang chö

The ḍākinīs of all-encompassing space concealed the profound and secret dharma,

སུས་ཀྱང་རྙེད་པར་དཀའ་བ་ནང་རྒྱུད་གསུམ། །

sü kyang nyepar kawa nanggyü sum

Making the three inner tantras difficult to find,

གྲུབ་མཆོག་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཡོངས་བླངས་ནོར་བུའི་གཏེར། །

drub chok nam kyi yong lang norbü ter

Yet extensively the masters have revealed these jewel-like treasures —

ས་འདིར་འགོད་མཛད་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

sa dir gö dzé khyé la chaktsal tö

Warden of this Land, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

བསིལ་ལྡན་ར་བ་དཀར་པོའི་ལྗོངས་འདི་ན། །

silden rawa karpö jong di na

In these valleys ringed by cold white mountains

རྒྱལ་བའི་བསྟན་དང་དེ་འཛིན་འདུས་པའི་སྡེ། །

gyalwé ten dang dé dzin düpé dé

Reside the teachings of the Buddha and those who safeguard them.

ཇི་སྙེད་བྱུང་བ་མགོན་པོ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་དྲིན། །

jinyé jungwa gönpo khyö kyi drin

It is due to your kindness that all this has come to pass —

བཀའ་དྲིན་འགྲན་བྲལ་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

kadrin drendral khyé la chaktsal tö

Incomparable Kindness, to you I offer homage and praise.

 

ད་དུང་སངས་རྒྱས་བསྟན་པ་གནས་ཀྱི་བར། །

dadung sangye tenpa né kyi bar

For as long as the Buddha’s teachings remain,

སྣ་ཚོགས་སྤྲུལ་པས་རྒྱལ་བའི་བསྟན་པ་དང༌། །

natsok trulpé gyalwé tenpa dang

There will come your emanations with the purpose of ensuring

གངས་ཅན་ཕན་བདེ་སྤེལ་བར་མཛད་པ་ཡི། །

gangchen pendé pelwar dzepa yi

The proliferation of the Dharma and the well-being of Tibet —

ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་མཉམ་མེད་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད། །

tukkyé nyammé khyé la chaktsal tö

To you whose bodhicitta aspiration is unequalled I offer homage and praise.

 

བདག་ཅག་གངས་རིའི་ཁྲོད་གནས་མི་རྣམས་ཀྱིས། །

dakchak gangri trö né mi nam kyi

It is thanks to your kindness

རྒྱལ་བསྟན་རིན་ཆེན་ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྒྲ་ཙམ་ཡང༌། །

gyalten rinchen chö kyi dra tsam yang

That the people of our snowy homeland

རྣ་བར་ཐོས་པ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་དྲིན་ཡིན་ན། །

nawar töpa khyö kyi drin yin na

Have at least heard of the great and precious buddhadharma —

བློ་ལྡན་སུ་ཞིག་ཁྱེད་ལ་ཅིས་མི་གུས། །

loden su zhik khyé la chi migü

No sensible person could lack respect for you.

 

དེ་ཕྱིར་བདག་ནི་དད་མོས་རྩེ་གཅིག་པས། །

dechir dak ni dé mö tsechik pé

Thus, with one-pointed faith and admiration,

མགོན་པོ་ཁྱོད་ལ་བསྟོད་ཅིང་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ན། །

gönpo khyö la tö ching chaktsal na

I pay homage to you and offer praise, Protector!

སྔོན་གྱི་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་དམ་བཅའ་ཆེན་པོ་ཡིས། །

ngön gyi tukkyé damcha chenpo yi

With your great long-standing bodhicitta pledge,

བདག་ཅག་རྗེས་བཟུང་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་པར་མཛོད། །

dakchak jezung jingyi lab par dzö

Please care for us and grant your blessings.

 

ཕྱོགས་བཅུའི་རྒྱལ་བས་དབང་བསྐུར་ལུང་བསྟན་ཅིང༌། །

chok chü gyalwé wangkur lungten ching

Through the empowerments and transmissions of all the buddhas of all directions,

སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་མཐུ་བཙན་པས། །

chenrezik kyi tukkyé tutsenpé

And through the bodhicitta strength of Avalokiteśvara,

འཇམ་དཔལ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཐུགས་བཞེད་བཞིན། །

jampal trulpé gyalpö tuk zhé zhin

In accordance with the aspirations of Mañjuśrī’s supreme emanation,

རྒྱལ་བསྟན་ཡུན་དུ་གནས་པ་ཉིད་གྱུར་ཅིག །

gyalten yündu nepa nyi gyur chik

May the teachings of the Buddha remain steadfast.

 

མཐའ་ཡས་འགྲོ་ཀུན་ཐུགས་བརྩེས་ཡོངས་སུ་བཟུང༌། །

tayé dro kün tuk tsé yongsu zung

Ever-embracing infinite beings with compassion and love,

ནམ་མཁའ་ཇི་སྲིད་གཞན་ཕན་ཕྲིན་ལས་སྤྱོད། །

namkha jisi zhenpen trinlé chö

For as long as space endures, you act for the benefit of others.

རྒྱལ་སྲས་དཔའ་བོ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་གཙུག་གི་རྒྱན། །

gyalsé pawo nam kyi tsuk gi gyen

Protector, crown ornament of the bodhisattvas,

མགོན་པོ་ཁྱེད་དང་མཚུངས་པར་བདག་གྱུར་ཅིག །

gönpo khyé dang tsungpar dak gyur chik

May I become your equal!

 

ཁྱེད་ལ་བསྟོད་ཅིང་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པའི་མཐུས། །

khyé la tö ching solwa tabpé tü

Through the power of praising and supplicating you,¹

བདག་སོགས་གང་དུ་གནས་པའི་ས་ཕྱོགས་དེར། །

dak sok gangdu nepé sachok der

In whatever land I and others find ourselves to be,

ནད་དང་དབུལ་ཕོངས་འཐབ་རྩོད་ཞི་བ་དང༌། །

né dang ulpong tabtsö zhiwa dang

May sickness, poverty, and strife be pacified,

ཆོས་དང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་འཕེལ་བར་མཛད་དུ་གསོལ། །

chö dang tashi pelwar dzé du sol

And may the Dharma flourish and auspiciousness increase!

 

རྒྱལ་དང་རྒྱལ་བའི་སྲས་ཀྱི་སྨོན་ལམ་དང༌། །

gyal dang gyalwé sé kyi mönlam dang

Through the pure aspirations of the buddhas and their heirs,

བདག་ཅག་མོས་དགེ་རྣམ་པར་དཀར་བའི་མཐུས། །

dakchak mö gé nampar karwé tü

And through the virtue of our own admiration,

མངའ་བདག་ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཁྲི་སྲོང་རྗེའི། །

ngadak chö kyi gyalpo trisong jé

May all be auspiciousness for the teachings to spread in all directions

ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་བསྟན་པ་མཐར་རྒྱས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག །

tukkyé tenpa tar gyé tashi shok

In accordance with the awakened aspirations of Lord Tri Song, the Dharma Sovereign!

 

ཅེས་ཚིགས་སུ་བཅད་པ་མཆོད་པའི་ལྷ་མོ་བཅུ་དྲུག་གི་གྲངས་ལྡན་འདི་ནི་མེ་རྟ་ཟླ་བ་བརྒྱད་པའི་ཚེས་ཉེར་བདུན་ལ་མི་ཕམ་འཇམ་དཔལ་དགྱེས་པས་བཀོད་པ་དགེ་ལེགས་འཕེལ།།

These sixteen verses, equal in number to the sixteen offering goddesses, were written down in the year of the male Fire Horse, on the 27th lunar day of the eighth month,² by Mipham Jampel Gyepa. May virtue and excellence flourish!
