The Rapid Path of the Vidyādharas

A General Preliminary Practice for the Profound Path

A terma of Lerab Lingpa

Homage to guru, deva and ḍākinī.

For the benefit of future fortunate generations,
I, Padma, have arranged this practice of the preliminaries
Common to all profound paths.

In a delightful and secluded place,
Let the body, speech and mind relax and settle comfortably.

dangpo mi tak chiwa gom

First, to meditate on impermanence and death:

tsesok düjé chubur dra

Our life, a compounded thing, is like a bubble,

gyumé lü kyi kyen mi zö

And this illusory body cannot survive ill-fortune.

ma shi tsé tar su yangmé

There is no-one who lives forever and escapes death;

dechir rang yang chiwar ngé

That’s why it is certain we will die.

tsé la ngemé chiwé kyen

Life is precarious, and the causes of death—

nam ong mi shé dü mi teb

We never know when they’ll come; there’s no set time.

namchi ngepa chü zemé

As for when we’ll die, we have not the faintest idea.

rang dang zhen dang gewé tab

And neither I nor others, nor even some virtuous method,

gang gi chiwa dok mi nü

Have the power to turn death back.

drokmé laktong parol dro

With no companions, empty-handed, I will leave for the other side.

düpa dral zhing sakpa zé

What’s been gathered will scatter; what’s been amassed will run out.

tsikpa zhik ching to nam lhung

What’s been built will crumble; what stands high will fall.

dinang dang gi mi lam dra

This present experience is like last night's dream.

nekab yütsam tsé di la

In this brief, momentary life,

dra dang tré ching nyen dangdral

I face enemies, and I lose loved ones.

döpa tok tu mi dro zhing

Things never go as originally intended;

mindö natsok tok tu bab

All manner of unwanted things befall me.

ga dang na dang chiwé dung

The torment of aging, sickness, and death—

mi yi dukngal dindra na

If human suffering is already like this,

ngensong dukngal gala zö

How can I bear the suffering of lower realms?

mi gé tsé di zhenpa pang

Doing away with clinging to this life and its harmful ways,

ngejung sampé gé la bé

With a mind of renunciation, I shall work at virtue,

chishol lelo mepar ja

And act without laziness or prevarication.

dené lama dorjé sem

Next, I meditate on Vajrasattva and consort

yum ché rang gi chiwor gom

Above the crown of my head:

rik künkhyab dak dorjé sem

Vajrasattva, lord of all buddha families,

könchok sum gyi ngowo la

Essence of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha—

dakzhen dro druk semchen nam

I and all other sentient beings of the six classes

changchub bardu kyab su chi

Take refuge in you, till we attain enlightenment.

gyalwa sé ché tamché kyi

Just as all the buddhas and their bodhisattva heirs

changchub chok tu tukkyé tar

Aroused the mind of supreme enlightenment,

dak gi changchub semkyé né

I too will arouse the bodhicitta

parchin druk la labpar gyi

And will train in the six perfections.

dak lü longchö getsa ché

My body, possessions and sources of goodness

mandal chik tu rab kö dé

I arrange as one mandala offering,

kunzang chöpé trin tabu

Just like Samantabhadra’s cloud of offerings,

gyalwa sé dangché la bul

And present it to the buddhas and bodhisattvas.

chok dü sangye düpé pal

Splendour of buddhas of all directions and times,

lama dorjé sempa la

Guru Vajrasattva, to you

solwa deb so jingyi lob

I pray: grant me your blessings

lé ngen dikdrib dakpa dang

So all harmful karma and actions, obscurations too, are purified,

kyen ngen drok su charwa dang

Unfavourable circumstances turn into allies,

nyamtok yeshe pelwa dang

And experience, realization and primordial wisdom increase,

rangzhen dön nyi drubpa ru

So that the benefit of both self and others may be achieved.

danta nyi du jingyi lob

Bless me, right here and now.

nyurwa nyi du jingyi lob

Bless me quickly, instantly.

lama yabyum jortsam né

From the point of union of the guru and consort

dütsi o gyün tabu jung

Flows nectar, like a stream of milk,

dak lü nedön dikdrib trü

Cleansing my body of illness, döns, evil actions and obscurations,

lü gang detong yeshe gyé

Filling my body and intensifying the wisdom of empty bliss.

wang dang ngödrub kün tob sam

I know I have received all empowerments and siddhis.

yigé gyapa yangyang dé

Again and again, I recite the hundred-syllable mantra…

tar ni né sum özer gyi

At the end, through light rays from the guru’s three centres

wang lang lama rang la du

I receive the empowerments. The guru dissolves into me;

rangnyi lhar sal dru chik da

I appear vividly as the deity, recite the single syllable,

kyemé neluk ngang la zhak

And rest in the unborn, unconditioned nature,

drib dak jinlab zhukpar gyur

Obscurations purified, blessings internalized.

kabsu rangsem hrih marpo

From time to time, my mind, as a red hrīḥ,

pé ché jiwö tsuk né tön

With phaṭ, is ejected through the aperture at the crown of my head,

dechen zhing du songwar gom

And I meditate on it travelling to the buddha field of Sukhāvatī.

nyurlam powé tartuk yin

This is the ultimate point of the swift path of phowa.

Those who encounter this and practise in this way
Will swiftly attain the level of the vidyādharas.

Samaya gya gya gya

Lerab Lingpa deciphered this from the yellow scroll he took from Phawang Serdugchen.

lamé né sum om kar ah mar dang

From the white oṃ, red āḥ and blue hūṃ at the guru’s three centres

hung ngön özer rim dang chikchar jung

Stream out light rays, one by one and then all at once.

rang gi né sum zhukpé wang zhi tob

They enter my three centres, and I receive the four empowerments,

drib zhi dak ching lam zhi gom la wang

Purifying the four obscurations, and empowering me to meditate on the four paths.

ku zhi gopang nyurdu ngöngyur sam

I consider that swiftly I manifestly attain the level of the four kāyas.

lama yabyum rang la nyimé tim

Guru and consort dissolve into me, non-dual.

rangnyi dorsem yabyum ngö su gyur

I actually become Vajrasattva and consort.
