Verses of Happiness and Well-Being upon Entering the City of Vaiśālī
from the Words of the Buddha
དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
Homage to the Three Jewels!1
གང་ལ་སེར་སྣ་རྣམས་ཆགས་པ། །
gangla serna nam chakpa
The one who has overcome greed and attachment,
རྣམ་བཅོམ་དྲི་མ་མེད་མཛད་ཅིང་། །
nam chom drima mé dzé ching
Who has eliminated every form of imperfection,
ཐུགས་ཞི་གནོད་པ་མི་མངའ་དེས། །
tuk zhi nöpa mi nga dé
And whose mind is tranquil, incapable of harm—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
འདྲེན་པ་གང་ཞིག་འགྲོ་བ་རྣམས། །
drenpa gangzhik drowa nam
The guide who helps all beings
ཐར་པའི་ལམ་དུ་འཇུག་མཛད་ཅིང་། །
tarpé lam du juk dzé ching
To embark upon the path to liberation
ཆོས་རྣམས་ཐམས་ཅད་སྟོན་པ་དེ། །
chö nam tamché tönpa dé
And who teaches all forms of Dharma—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
སྟོན་པ་འགྲོ་བ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་རྟེན། །
tönpa drowa nam kyi ten
The teacher and supporter of beings,
སེམས་ཅན་ཀུན་གྱི་དོན་གྱི་ཕྱིར། །
semchen kün gyi dön gyi chir
Who, for the sake of all who live,
གང་གིས་བདེ་བ་མངའ་མཛོད་དེས། །
gang gi dewa nga dzö dé
Came to master the state of bliss—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
སྐྱོབ་པ་གང་ཞིག་བྱམས་པ་ཡི། །
kyobpa gangzhik jampa yi
The protector who, with a loving mind,
ཐུགས་ཀྱིས་འགྲོ་བ་འདི་དག་ཀུན། །
tuk kyi drowa didak kün
Forever cares for all these beings,
བུ་གཅིག་བཞིན་དུ་རྟག་བསྐྱངས་དེས། །
bu chik zhindu tak kyang dé
As if they were his only child—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
གང་ཞིག་འཁོར་བར་འགྲོ་བ་ཡི། །
gangzhik khorwar drowa yi
The one who provides support to all beings
སེམས་ཅན་ཀུན་གྱི་རྟེན་གྱུར་ཅིག །
semchen kün gyi ten gyur chik
As they wander through the wheel of life
གླིང་དང་དཔུང་གཉེན་གྱུར་པ་དེས། །
ling dang pungnyen gyurpa dé
And is to them a sanctuary and protector—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
གང་ཞིག་ཆོས་ཀུན་མངོན་སུམ་གྱུར། །
gangzhik chö kün ngönsum gyur
The one to whom all dharmas are apparent,
གཙང་ཞིང་བསླུ་བ་མི་མངའ་ལ། །
tsang zhing luwa mi nga la
Who is pure and incapable of deception,2
གསུང་གཙང་གཙང་མར་མཛད་པ་དེས། །
sung tsang tsangmar dzepa dé
Whose words are pure and deeds are purifying—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
དཔའ་བོ་ཆེན་པོ་གང་སྐྱེས་པས། །
pawo chenpo gang kyepé
The great hero who, through taking birth,
ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་དོན་འབྱོར་གྱུར་ཅིང་། །
pün sum tsok dön jor gyur ching
Perfectly fulfilled abundant purpose
དོན་གྲུབ་ཚོགས་ཀྱང་གྲུབ་པ་དེས། །
döndrub tsok kyang drubpa dé
And achieved a multitude of aims—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
གང་ཞིག་སྐྱེས་པས་ས་རྣམས་ནི། །
gangzhik kyepé sa nam ni
The one whose birth caused the land,
ནགས་ཚལ་བཅས་བ་རབ་གཡོས་ཤིང་། །
naktsal chewa rab yö shing
Including forests, to tremble and quake,
སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་རབ་དགའ་དེས། །
semchen tamché rabga dé
And brought joy to all sentient beings—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
བྱང་ཆུབ་སྙིང་པོར་གཤེགས་པ་ན། །
changchub nyingpor shekpa na
The one who prompted six earthquakes
ས་དག་རྣམ་དྲུག་གཡོས་གྱུར་ཅིང་། །
sa dak nam druk yö gyur ching
As he approached the seat of bodhi
བདུད་ཡིད་མི་བདེར་གྱུར་པ་དེས། །
dü yi mi der gyurpa dé
And who caused Māra to despair—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར་པ་ན། །
chö kyi khorlo korpa na
The one who turned the Dharma Wheel,
འཕགས་པའི་བདེན་པ་རྣམས་གསུངས་པ། །
pakpé denpa nam sungpa
Explaining the truths of the Noble Ones,
ཐུབ་པའི་སྙན་པ་གང་བྱུང་དེས། །
tubpé nyenpa gang jung dé
And gained a reputation as a Sage—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
ཡིད་འཕྲོག་གང་གིས་མུ་སྟེགས་བྱེད། །
yitrok gang gi mutek jé
The captivating one who conquered
ཐམས་ཅད་ཆོས་ཀྱིས་ཕམ་མཛད་ཅིང་། །
tamché chö kyi pam dzé ching
All tīrthikas by means of the Dharma,
ཚོགས་ཀུན་དབང་དུ་མཛད་པ་དེས། །
tsok kün wang du dzepa dé
And took charge of all communities—
ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད་པར་འགྱུར། །
khyé la delek dzepar gyur
He will bring you happiness and well-being.
སངས་རྒྱས་ཁྱེད་ལ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཛད། །
sangye khyé la delek dzé
May Buddha bring you happiness and well-being,
བརྒྱ་བྱིན་ཚངས་པའི་ལྷ་རྣམས་དང་། །
gyajin tsangpé lha nam dang
May Śakra and the Brahma gods as well3
འབྱུང་པོ་ཀུན་གྱི་བདེ་ལེགས་ནི། །
jungpo kün gyi delek ni
And all the worldly spirits too provide you
ཁྱེད་ལ་རྟག་ཏུ་སྦྱིན་གྱུར་ཅིག །
khyé la taktu jin gyur chik
With happiness and well-being for evermore.
སངས་རྒྱས་བསོད་ནམས་མཐུ་དག་དང་། །
sangye sönam tu dak dang
Through the Buddha's merit and power
ལྷ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ནི་བསམ་པ་ཡིས། །
lha nam kyi ni sampa yi
And the intentions of the devas,
ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་དོན་འདོད་གང་ཡིན་པ། །
khyé kyi dön dö gang yinpa
May whatever you wish for or desire
དོན་དེ་དེ་རིང་འགྲུབ་གྱུར་ཅིག །
dön dé dering drub gyur chik
Be accomplished now upon this very day.
རྐང་གཉིས་ཁྱེད་ཅག་བདེ་ལེགས་ཤོག །
kang nyi khyechak delek shok
Two-legged creatures, may you be well.
རྐང་བཞི་ཁྱེད་ཅག་བདེ་ལེགས་ཤོག །
kang zhi khyechak delek shok
Four-legged creatures, may you be well.
ཁྱེད་ཅག་ལམ་འགྲོ་བདེ་ལེགས་ཤོག །
khyechak lam dro delek shok
You who are on journeys, may you be well.
ཕྱིར་འོང་རྣམས་ཀྱང་བདེ་ལེགས་ཤོག །
chir ong nam kyang delek shok
You who are returning, may you be well.
ཉིན་མོ་བདེ་ལེགས་མཚན་བདེ་ལེགས། །
nyinmo delek tsen delek
May the day be well and the night be well.
ཉི་མའི་གུང་ལའང་བདེ་ལེགས་ཤིང་། །
nyimé gung la ang delek shing
May the hours of noon bring happiness too.
ཁྱེད་ཅག་ཀུན་ཏུ་བདེ་ལེགས་ཤོག །
khyechak küntu delek shok
May you always enjoy happiness and well-being,
ཁྱེད་ཅག་སྡིག་པར་མ་གྱུར་ཅིག །
khyechak dikpar magyur chik
And may you never fall prey to evil deeds.
སངས་རྒྱས་ལྷ་རྣམས་སྟོང་དག་གིས། །
sangye lha nam tong dak gi
Surrounded by thousands of gods,
ཡོངས་སུ་བསྐོར་ཏེ་གཤེགས་མཛད་ཀྱིས། །
yongsu kor té shek dzé kyi
The Buddha now approaches—
སྡང་སེམས་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་དབྱེར་ཅིག །
dang sem denpa nam yer chik
Let those who bear ill will be gone!
སྙིང་རྗེའི་བདག་ཉིད་ཅན་རྣམས་འཁོད། །
nyingjé daknyi chen nam khö
And compassionate ones remain.
སངས་རྒྱས་རང་སངས་རྒྱས་རྣམས་དང་། །
sangyé rang sangyé nam dang
Through the truthful words of the Buddhas,
དགྲ་བཅོམ་སློབ་པའི་བདེན་ཚིག་གིས། །
drachom lobpé dentsik gi
Pratyekabuddhas, arhats and disciples,
འཇིག་རྟེན་མི་ཕན་བྱེད་པ་རྣམས། །
jikten mi pen jepa nam
Let all who would harm the world
གྲོང་ཁྱེར་འདིར་ནི་སྟོང་གྱུར་ཅིག །
drongkhyer dir ni tong gyur chik
Depart and be banished from this city.
སེམས་ཅན་ཀུན་དང་སྲོག་ཆགས་ཀུན། །
semchen kün dang sokchak kün
All sentient beings, all living creatures,
འབྱུང་པོ་ཀུན་དང་ཁྱེད་ཅག་ཀུན། །
jungpo kün dang khyechak kün
All spirits, each and every one of you:
བདེ་བ་འབའ་ཞིག་ལྡན་གྱུར་ཅིག །
dewa bazhik den gyur chik
May you experience only happiness.
ཐམས་ཅད་ནད་རྣམས་མེད་པར་ཤོག །
tamché né nam mepar shok
May you all be spared from sickness.
ཀུན་གྱིས་བཟང་རྣམས་མཐོང་གྱུར་ཅིག །
kün gyi zang nam tong gyur chik
May you all encounter what is good
གང་ཡང་སྡིག་པར་མ་གྱུར་ཅིག །
gang yang dikpar magyur chik
And never fall prey to what is evil.
འབྱུང་པོ་གང་དག་འདིར་ནི་ལྷགས་གྱུར་ཅིང་། །
jungpo gangdak dir ni lhak gyur ching
May all the spirits gathered in this place,
ས་དང་བར་སྣང་དག་ན་གནས་པ་རྣམས། །
sa dang barnang dak na nepa nam
Be it on the earth or in the sky,
སྐྱེ་དགུ་རྣམས་ལ་རྟག་ཏུ་བྱམས་བྱེད་ཤོག །
kyegu nam la taktu jam jé shok
Always show goodwill and kindness to all beings,
ཉིན་དང་མཚན་དུ་ཆོས་ཀྱང་སྤྱོད་གྱུར་ཅིག །
nyin dang tsen du chö kyang chö gyur chik
And practise Dharma day and night!
འཕགས་པ་ཡངས་པའི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་ལས་སོ།། །།
