This brief practice will enhance the virtue of the elderly and those of lesser acumen. The only difference with scriptural texts that elucidate The Oblation Ritual which Comforts the Female Ghosts whose Mouths are Aflame2 and The Dhāraṇī of Surūpa3 and so on is whether or not they include the praise of the four names of the Tathāgatas. Besides that, in those texts, the main aspect of the torma offering, the dhāraṇīs and mantras and their benefits are mentioned, but they do not include the elaborate sections of prose.

Rangjung Dorje wrote this in the hope that it might benefit those of lesser acumen who do not know how to perform a water torma rite.

  1. Glacial Ocean (Tib. gangs can mtsho) is an epithet of the buddhas of the five families in the Nyingma tradition. The glacial oceans, or oceans derived from melt water are said to derive from scented water from the pores of the bodies of the buddhas and then give rise to all world systems.
