Prayer to Guru Tsokyé Dorje

༄༅། །གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེའི་གསོལ་འདེབས།

A Prayer to Guru Lake-Born Vajra¹

མཁྱེན་ནོ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

khyen no khyen no guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Think of me! Please think of me! Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

སྐྱབས་གནས་ཀུན་འདུས་ཀྱི་སྤྱི་གཟུགས། །

kyabné kündü kyi chizuk

Universal form embodying all sources of refuge;

མཆོག་གསུམ་ཀུན་འདུས་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ། །

chok sum kündü kyi ngowo

Essence embodying the Three Jewels,

རྩ་གསུམ་ཀུན་འདུས་ཀྱི་མངའ་བདག །

tsa sum kündü kyi ngadak

Ruler embodying the Three Roots—

གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

གསང་ཆེན་རྒྱུད་སྡེ་ཡི་སྟོན་པ། །

sang chen gyüdé yi tönpa

Revealer of the Great Secret’s classes of tantra;

མཁས་གྲུབ་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཡི་གཙུག་རྒྱན། །

khedrub gyatso yi tsukgyen

Crown ornament of the ocean of learned and accomplished masters;

གནས་ཡུལ་མཁའ་འགྲོ་ཡི་རིགས་བདག །

neyul khandro yi rikdak

Lord of the community of ḍākinīs in sacred sites and regions—

གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

ཀ་དག་ཆོས་སྐུ་ཡི་སྟོན་པ། །

kadak chöku yi tönpa

Revealer of dharmakāya, which is primordial purity;

ལྷུན་གྲུབ་ལོངས་སྐུ་ཡི་མངའ་བདག །

lhündrub longku yi ngadak

Ruler of saṃboghakāya, which is spontaneous presence;

ཐུགས་རྗེ་སྐུ་གསུམ་གྱི་སྟོན་པ། །

tukjé ku sum gyi tönpa

Revealer of the three kāyas,² which are compassion—

གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

སྤངས་རྟོགས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་གྱི་སངས་རྒྱས། །

pang tok tarchin gyi sangye

Buddha who has perfected abandonment and realization;³

ལུང་རྟོགས་དམ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་འབྱུང་གནས། །

lungtok damchö kyi jungné

Fountainhead of the holy teachings of scripture and realization;

འཕགས་པའི་དགེ་འདུན་གྱི་མངའ་བདག །

pakpé gendün gyi ngadak

Ruler of the ārya saṅgha—⁴

གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

ཐར་པའི་ལམ་སྟོན་གྱི་དེད་དཔོན། །

tarpé lam tön gyi depön

Captain who shows us the path to freedom;

མ་རིག་མུན་སེལ་གྱི་བླ་མ། །

marik münsel gyi lama

Teacher who dispels the darkness of unseeing;

དག་པའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་ཀྱི་སྐྱེལ་མ། །

dakpé zhingkham kyi kyelma

Escort to the pure realms—

གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

སྐུ་གསུམ་བཀའ་བརྒྱུད་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ། །

ku sum kagyü kyi ngowo

Essence of the transmitted teachings of three kāyas,

རིག་འཛིན་འདུས་པ་ཡི་གཙུག་རྒྱན། །

rigdzin düpa yi tsukgyen

Crown ornament of the gathering of vidyādharas,

བཀའ་དྲིན་མཉམ་མེད་ཀྱི་བླ་མ། །

kadrin nyammé kyi lama

Teacher of incomparable kindness—

གུ་རུ་མཚོ་སྐྱེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

guru tsokyé dorjé khyen no

Guru Lake-Born Vajra, please think of me!

མོས་གུས་གདུང་དབྱངས་ཀྱི་སྒྲ་ཡིས། །

mögü dung yang kyi dra yi

If the sounds of this longing tune, sung in devotion and respect,

ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་དེ་བསྐུལ་ན། །

khyé kyi tukjé dé kul na

Appeal to your compassion,

སྔོན་གྱི་ཐུགས་དམ་ལ་དགོངས་ནས། །

ngön gyi tukdam la gong né

Please consider the promises you made in the past,

གནས་འདིར་རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་གྱིས་བསྐྱེད་ལ། །

né dir dzutrul gyi kyé la

And in this very place, with your miraculous powers,

མ་ཚོགས་མཁའ་འགྲོ་ཡི་འཁོར་དང༌། །

ma tsok khandro yi khor dang

Manifest your retinue of the hosts of mother ḍākinīs,

རིག་འཛིན་གྲུབ་ཐོབ་དང་བཅས་པས། །

rigdzin drubtob dang chepé

Vidyādharas, and siddhas,

གསོལ་འདེབས་མོས་པ་ཡི་བུ་ལ། །

soldeb möpa yi bu la

That they may rain down a great shower of blessings

བྱིན་རླབས་ཆར་ཆེན་དེ་ཕོབས་ཤོག །

jinlab char chen dé pob shok

On their children devoted in prayer.

སྣང་སྲིད་འོད་གསལ་དུ་འཆར་བའི། །

nangsi ösal du charwé

Please grant the blessing and accomplishment

བྱིན་རླབས་དངོས་གྲུབ་དེ་སྩོལ་མཛོད། །

jinlab ngödrub dé tsol dzö

Of the universe of appearances and possibilities arising as luminosity.

འདི་ཕྱི་བར་དོའི་དུས་ཐམས་ཅད། །

di chiwar dö dü tamché

In this life, future lives, and in the bardos—at all times,

འབྲལ་མེད་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཡིས་ཟུངས་ལ། །

dralmé tukjé yi zung la

Please hold me in your undying compassion.

བདག་གི་རིགས་བདག་དེ་མཛོད་ལ། །

dak gi rikdak dé dzö la

Please be the leader of my spiritual family⁵

མཆོག་ཐུན་དངོས་གྲུབ་རེ་སྩོལ་ཤོག །

choktün ngödrub ré tsol shok

And grant me every siddhi, ordinary and supreme.

ཅེས་པ་འདི་བླ་མ་ཨོ་ཊའི་མཚན་ཅན་གྱིས་བསྐུལ་ངོར། སྔགས་བཙུན་ལས་འབྲེལ་རྩལ་གྱིས་བྲིས་པ་དགེའོ།།

Here, we expect to see nirmāṇakāya, since the previous lines address the dharmakāya and saṃbhogakāya, and since, doctrinally, nirmāṇakāya is linked to compassion or the compassionate responsiveness of the ground of being. Nevertheless, we do not find this prayer in the 2017 edition, so we keep "three kāyas" as is. ↑
3. Buddhas have abandoned everything that needs to be abandoned (viz., afflictive emotions, obscurations, etc.) and realized all that needs to be realized. ↑
4. 'phags pa'i dge 'dun. This refers to the greater society of bodhisattvas who have reached the Path of Seeing. ↑
5. rigs bdag. The hierarch of a buddha family; that is, one who oversees and guides a bodhisattva to reach their spiritual potential. ↑
