A Prayer to the Eight Mahāsiddhas of Tibet

མི་འགྱུར་བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོའི་མཁའ་དབྱིངས་ལས། །

mingyur dewa chenpö khaying lé

Within the expanse of unchanging great bliss,

རྣམ་ཀུན་ཡོངས་རྫོགས་སྒྱུ་འཕྲུལ་དྲྭ་བའི་སྤྲིན། །

namkün yongdzok gyutrul drawé trin

From the clouds of the perfect and complete illusory net,¹

མཁའ་ཁྱབ་གདུལ་བྱར་འདོད་དགུའི་ཆར་འབེབས་པ། །

khakhyab duljar dögü charbebpa

A rain falls upon beings to be guided throughout space, fulfilling all that is desired—

རིག་འཛིན་བླ་མའི་ཚོགས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

rigdzin lamé tsok la solwa deb

To the gathering of vidyādhara gurus, I pray!

བསམ་ཡས་མཆིམས་ཕུའི་བྲག་དམར་ཀེའུ་ཚང་དུ། །

samyé chimpü drak mar ké'u tsang du

At Drakmar Ke’u Tsang cave in Samyé Chimpu,²

གསང་སྔགས་སྒྲུབ་པ་བཀའ་བརྒྱད་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཆེར། །

sang ngak drubpa kagyé kyilkhor cher

You ripened the fortunate king and your disciples

ལས་ཅན་རྒྱལ་པོ་རྗེ་འབངས་སྨིན་མཛད་པ། །

lechen gyalpo jebang min dzepa

Through the great maṇḍala of Secret Mantra, the Eight Herukas—

ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཐོད་ཕྲེང་རྩལ་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

orgyen tötreng tsal la solwa deb

Mighty Skull-Garlanded Guru of Uḍḍiyāna, to you I pray!

བོད་ཡུལ་སྒྲུབ་གནས་སྒྲགས་ཀྱི་ཡང་རྫོང་དུ། །

böyul drubné drak kyi yang dzong du

At the meditation caves of Drak Yangdzong in Tibet,

འཇམ་དཔལ་གཤིན་རྗེ་གཤེད་པོ་མངོན་གྲུབ་ནས། །

jampal shinjé shepo ngön drub né

You actualized Mañjuśrī Yamāntaka,

འགལ་བྱེད་ཆམ་ཕབ་བྲག་ལ་ཕུར་བ་བཏབ། །

gal jé cham pab drak la purwa tab

Subdued harmful forces,³ and pierced solid rock with your kīla—

སངས་རྒྱས་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

sangye yeshe zhab la solwa deb

Sangyé Yeshé, at your feet I pray!

གནས་མཆོག་མཆིམས་ཕུ་དཔལ་གྱི་དབེན་རྩ་རུ། །

né chok chimpu pal gyi wen tsa ru

At the sublime and sacred site of Chimpu, in the glorious Wentsa cave,

པདྨ་གསུང་གི་ལྷ་ཚོགས་རབ་གྲུབ་ཏེ། །

pema sung gi lhatsok rab drub té

You accomplished the deities of Lotus Speech,⁴

སྲིད་གསུམ་དབང་བྱེད་རྟ་སྐད་གཙུགས་ནས་བསྒྲགས། །

si sum wang jé také tsuk né drak

And proclaimed your sovereignty over the three realms with the neigh of a horse—

རྒྱལ་བ་མཆོག་དབྱངས་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

gyalwa chok yang zhab la solwa deb

Gyalwa Chokyang, at your feet I pray!

ལྷོ་བྲག་མཁར་ཆུ་དཔལ་གྱི་ཡང་ཕུག་ཏུ། །

lho drak khar chu pal gyi yang puk tu

At the glorious Yangpuk cave of Lhodrak Kharchu,

ཡང་དག་ཐུགས་ཀྱི་གྲུབ་པ་མངོན་དུ་གྱུར། །

yangdak tuk kyi drubpa ngön du gyur

You accomplished Yangdak Heruka, awakened mind,

དགོངས་པའི་རྩལ་རྫོགས་ཉི་མའི་ཟེར་ལ་ཆིབས། །

gongpé tsal dzok nyimé zer la chib

And rode upon rays of the sun born from perfect realization—

ནམ་མཁའི་སྙིང་པོའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

namkhé nyingpö zhab la solwa deb

Namkhé Nyingpo, at your feet I pray!

རིགས་གསུམ་དཔལ་གྱི་བསམ་ཡས་དབུ་རྩེ་རུ། །

rik sum pal gyi samyé u tsé ru

At the summit of glorious Samyé, the palace of the three families,

ཆེ་མཆོག་ཡོན་ཏན་དགོངས་པ་མངོན་གྱུར་ནས། །

chemchok yönten gongpa ngöngyur né

You actualized Chemchok Heruka, awakened qualities,

ཏིང་འཛིན་གཡོ་མེད་བོད་ཡུལ་ཆོས་ལ་བཀོད། །

tingdzin yomé böyul chö la kö

And through unwavering samādhi established the Tibetan people in the Dharma—

མངའ་བདག་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

ngadak gyalpö zhab la solwa deb

Sovereign King,⁵ at your feet I pray!

མོན་ཁ་ནེའུ་རིང་སེང་གེ་རྫོང་གསུམ་དུ། །

mön kha né'u ring sengé dzong sum du

At the three lion fortresses of Mönkha Nering Sengé Dzong,⁶

ཕུར་པ་ཕྲིན་ལས་ལྷ་ཚོགས་མངོན་དུ་གྲུབ། །

purpa trinlé lhatsok ngön du drub

You accomplished the deities of Vajrakīlaya, awakened activities,

རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་སྐུ་བརྙེས་ཤི་བའི་མི་རོ་བསླང་། །

dzutrul ku nyé shiwé mi ro lang

And performed miracles, such as restoring the dead to life—

ཡེ་ཤེས་མཚོ་རྒྱལ་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

yeshe tsogyal zhab la solwa deb

Yeshe Tsogyal, at your feet I pray!

ཡར་སྟོད་ཤམ་པོ་གངས་ཀྱི་ར་བ་རུ། །

yar tö shampo gang kyi rawa ru

At Yartö Shampo Gangkyi Rawa,⁷

རྦོད་གཏོང་མ་མོའི་ལྷ་ཚོགས་ཞལ་གཟིགས་ནས། །

bötong mamö lhatsok zhalzik né

You beheld the deities of Mamo Bötong,

སྣང་སྲིད་མ་མོ་དབང་སྡུད་ལས་ལ་ཁོལ། །

nangsi mamo wangdü lé la khol

And brought the mamos of phenomenal existence under your power and into service—

དཔལ་གྱི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

pal gyi yeshe zhab la solwa deb

Palgyi Yeshe, at your feet I pray!

སྤ་གྲོ་སྟག་ཚང་བསམ་འགྲུབ་ཀེའུ་ཚང་དུ། །

pa dro tak tsang sam drub ké'u tsang du

Within the wish-fulfilling cave of Paro Taktsang,

འཇིག་རྟེན་མཆོད་བསྟོད་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ལེགས་གྲུབ་ཏེ། །

jikten chötö kyilkhor lek drub té

You accomplished the maṇḍala of Jikten Chötö,

ལྷ་སྲིན་དྲེགས་པ་བྲན་ཁོལ་ལས་བཞི་བསྒྲུབ། །

lhasin drekpa drenkhol lé zhi drub

And bound arrogant gods and demons into service to accomplish the four activities—

དཔལ་གྱི་སེང་གེའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

pal gyi sengé zhab la solwa deb

Palgyi Sengé, at your feet I pray!

གཡའ་མ་ལུང་དང་ལི་ཡུལ་ལྕང་ར་རུ། །

ya ma lung dang liyul chang ra ru

At Yamalung and Changra in Khotan,⁸

དྲག་སྔགས་དམོད་པའི་ལྷ་ཚོགས་རབ་གྲུབ་པས། །

drakngak möpé lhatsok rab drubpé

You perfected the deities of Möpa Drakngak,

མཐུ་སྟོབས་མེ་འབར་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྤྱན་དང་ལྡན། །

tutob mebar yeshe chen dangden

Thereby gaining blazing, all-penetrating wisdom vision—

བཻ་རོ་ཙཱ་ནའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

bai ro tsa né zhab la solwa deb

Vairotsana, at your feet I pray!

དེ་ལྟར་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པས་དུས་གསུམ་གྱི། །

detar solwa tabpé dü sum gyi

By praying in this way, may the blessings

རིག་འཛིན་བླ་མའི་བྱིན་རླབས་སྙིང་ལ་ཞུགས། །

rigdzin lamé jinlab nying la zhuk

Of the vidyādhara gurus of the three times enter my heart.

མཆོག་དང་ཐུན་མོང་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་ཐོབ་ནས། །

chok dang tünmong ngödrub kün tob né

May I attain all supreme and common siddhis,

བསྟན་དང་འགྲོ་བའི་དོན་ཆེན་འགྲུབ་པར་ཤོག །

ten dang drowé dön chen drubpar shok

And accomplish the vast purpose of the teachings and of beings!

ཅེས་པ་འདི་ཡང་ལྷོ་ཕྱོགས་དཀར་མོ་སྟག་ཚང་དུ་གྲགས་པའི་སྒྲུབ་གནས་ཀྱི་ཡང་དབེན་བཀྲ་ཤིས་དཔལ་འབར་པདྨ་བདེ་ལྡན་གླིང་ཞེས་བྱ་བར་མི་ཕམ་རྣམ་པར་རྒྱལ་བ་རང་ཉིད་སྒྲུབ་ཆེན་བཀའ་བརྒྱད་ཀྱི་བསྙེན་སྒྲུབ་ལ་གནས་པའི་ཚེ་རྣམ་རྒྱལ་ཆུ་སྦྲུལ་གྱི་གནམ་ལོ་གསར་ཚེས་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་ཟླ་བའི་ཚེས་ཉེར་གཅིག་ལ་སྦྱར་བ་དགེ་ལེགས་འཕེལ། །མངྒ་ལཾ།།

While in retreat on the approach and accomplishment practices of the Eight Great Sādhanas, at the hermitage of Tashi Palbar Pema Deden Ling, at the renowned southern sacred site of Karmo Taktsang, I—Mipham Nampar Gyalwa—composed this prayer on the twenty-first day of the Miracle Month following the new year of the Water Snake of the sixteenth rabjung cycle.⁹ May virtue and goodness increase! Maṅgalaṃ!

1. ↑ The deities of the Māyājāla.
2. ↑ The spiritual centre of Chimpu, is the cave of Drakmar Ke’u Tsang, the Treasure Nest of Drakmar. This is where Guru Rinpoche first initiated his disciples into the Vajrayāna, through the Eight Sādhana Teachings.
3. ↑ While at Yangdzong during the reign of King Langdarma (838–842), Nubchen Sangyé Yeshé revealed special instructions from the Yamāntaka tantras—on fierce spells, incantations, and magic, collected earlier in India and Nepal—to subdue harmful forces and quell conflicts destabilizing Tibet.

6. ↑ Mönkha Nering Sengé Dzong in Bhutan lies at the base of a hill shaped like a leaping lion, which gives the site its name Sengé Dzong or Lion Fortress. Three other sacred caves are nearby: Dorjé Dzong to the east, Rinchen Dzong to the west, and Pema Dzong higher up the mountain. Because of this arrangement, the site is commonly known as Sengé Dzongsum—the Three Lion Fortresses.
