The Wish-Fulfilling King of Power Who Spontaneously Accomplishes the Two Aims
A Method for Bestowing the Long-Life Empowerment for 'The Vase of Immortal Life: The Long-Life Practice of the Vidyādharas'
by the First Dodrupchen, Jigme Trinle Özer
Ever-excellent dharmakāya Amitābha—unchanging wisdom mind,
Saṃbhogakāya Vajradhara of the five buddha families—spontaneously perfect enlightened speech,
And immortal Padmasambhava, in nirmāṇakāya form:
To you, three-kāya deities of longevity, I pay homage!
Omniscient wisdom as vast as space,
Light rays of loving kindness shining forth like the sun—
Mighty and capable Jigme Lingpa, may I never be separate from you until enlightenment,
And with heartfelt commitment, rely upon you!
Here I proudly present the empowerment, like a garland of white lotus flowers,
For the longevity practice of the vidyādharas and the youthful and immortal Padmasambhava,
Who was born perfectly from the beautiful lady of this golden earth.
May you, fortunate disciples, enjoy it with delight!
The main text says: “In an isolated place, arrange on the shrine a maṇḍala of coloured sand, or a painting, or heaps of rice, depending on your circumstances. In the centre, on a raised platform, place the longevity vase in the middle, the long-life pills on the right, the long-life arrow behind, the long-life alcohol on the left, and the long-life torma in front, with the offerings all around them. Imagine yourself and the deities as indivisible, and follow the Gathering of Vidyādharas1 activity text through till the end of the section Offering Praise. Then open up the recitation palace”
Clearly visualize the appearance aspect of the maṇḍala, which is what is to be divided.
droom bisho bishuddhé pé dza
bhrūṃ viśva viśuddhe phaṭ jaḥ
By reciting this, a second maṇḍala is opened up and appears clearly in the space in front, linked with fire [to the maṇḍala of the self-visualization].
Then perform the recitation of the approach and accomplishment from the main text:
tukkar pema nyidé …
At my heart, upon a lotus, sun and moon...
After this, the visualization for the practice of long-life is as follows.
hrih, tsewang rigdzin pema jung
Hrīḥ. I am Padmākara, the vidyādhara with power over life
nangsi zilnön tukka ru
Who has control over all appearance and existence.
chomden gönpo tsepakmé
At my heart is Lord Amitāyus, buddha of limitless life,
mar sal longku yum dang jor
Brilliant red, in saṃbhogakāya form, in union with his consort,
pema ragé bumpa dzin
Holding a vase made of padmarāga ruby.
tukkar nyidé ga'ü nang
At his heart, within an amulet of sun and moon, stands
sok gi nyingpo yigé hrih
The vital heart-essence, the syllable hrīḥ.
tamar ngak kyi trengwé kor
Around it stretches the mantra-mālā, from which
özer tröpé tenyö chü
Rays of lights stream out and gather in
gyalwa rigdzin drangsong gih
The vital force and energy of the inanimate and animate universe,
tsechü dü la chü du dril
And the essence of longevity of all buddhas, vidyādharas, and ṛṣis,
bapü buga tsün chö kyang
Concentrating it all into one vital elixir.2
tsepakmépé tem gyi gang
Even the pores of my body are filled with Amitāyuses,
kün kyang bungwa tsang zhik tar
Every one of them reverberating sweetly, like swarming bees,
hrih dra jam la nyenpar drog
With the soft, low sound of hrīḥ:
chimé rigdzin drubpar gyur
I accomplish the state of vidyādhara of immortality.
The root text says: “Imagine this as clearly as you can as you recite it. Then maintain the gentle vase breath while reciting:”

In my heart is the wisdom being Amitāyus. He is bright red and adorned with the thirteen ornaments of the saṃbhogakāya. He embraces his consort, his own radiance, and his two hands are placed in the mudrā of equipoise, upon which rests a long-life vase made of padmarāga ruby. Within the heart of the male and female deities—who are inseparable—is an amulet made of the sun, the moon, and the pure essence of all the elements of the universe and the beings within it. Inside it is the syllable hrīḥ, the essence of the life-force.
dé yé kor du ngak treng lugu gyü du khor zhing
Around it is the mantra garland, arranged like a chain and turning in a clockwise direction.
It emits resplendent light rays that perfect the strength of clarity and stability.

Recite however much is appropriate.
ngak treng nam lé özer kar tserwa tak dzingpa tabu bün bün trö
From the mantra garland, dazzling white light rays shine forth and gather in—as if with a lasso—
womin dakpé zhing ngepa ngaden takpa gyün gyi khorlö yönten dang
The qualities of the ever-turning wheel of the five perfections present in the Akaniṣṭha pure realm,
rigdzin dang drangsong nam kyi kalwar nepé tsechü
The essence of the life-force of the vidyādharas and ṛṣis, which allows them to remain alive for aeons,
tenpa nö kyi jikten | yowa chü kyi semchen tamché kyi kham dang trakdang zijin ngé chü tsé pal sönam tamché do khab len gyi chak ché lenpa tar dü né rangnyi la timpé mö
And all the elements, lustre, splendour, vital essence, longevity, renown and merit of the inanimate world—the vessel—and the animate beings—the contents—like a magnet attracting iron filings. All of this then dissolves into you.
khordé kyi dangchü dedak tamché kechik nyi la chü du dril né tsepakmé kyi ku dul trarab tu lü kyi nangkhong bapü buga tsün chö kyang tam gyi gakpé dorjé sok la wang tob ching
All the vital essences of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are instantly gathered, and completely fill all the infinitesimally small pores of Amitāyus, which bestow the empowerment of indestructible life
yungdrung tabü lü su gyurpar mik shing
and render your body indestructible like a svastika.
dedak kün kyang chik la chik mi rek
All of these neither touch
chik gi chik mi drib yangdok mepa til gong churwa tar nepa tamché kyi zhal né tsé nyingpo kün lé yangnying du gyurpa
nor obstruct each other, nor is there any space in between them, like sesame seeds overflowing from a pod. The essence of their longevity is transformed into the quintessence of longevity itself.
né kul sok gi rigpa yigé dru chikpo bungwa tsang zhikpa tar jam la nyenpa drokpar gyur
When invoked, the syllables—which are the life-force vidyā—resound softly and pleasantly, like bees from a broken hive.
While holding the gentle vase breath, apply yourself diligently either to the silent recitation or only to the vajra recitation. For those of the highest capacity, who are free from conceptual elaborations, this is the long-life practice where wind and mind are indivisible.
Generally, when practising for the benefit of others, or when you are a beginner whose samādhi and control over the winds are weaker, it is most important while reciting the accomplishment mantra and imagining that all the manifestations of Amitāyus resound with the syllable hrīḥ, to practise the emanation and reabsorption of light rays. When practising for the benefit of others, visualize the life-force essence of the person you are practising for as the syllable nṛ within the heart's life-force syllable, gathering in all the essences of longevity. Whichever the case, it is said that it is excellent for everyone to practise the vajra recitation for a little while during the latter part of the session.
om ah hung benza maha guru ayurjnana maha punyé tsé droom nri dza sarva siddhi hum
oṃ āḥ hūṃ vajra-mahā-guru āyur-jñāna-mahā-puṇye tsé bhrūṃ nṛ jaḥ sarva-siddhi hūṃ
In this way, recite the long-life approach mantra and imagine that the front visualization resounds with hrīḥ. At the end of the session, join this with the gentle vase breath. Recite however many of the hrīḥ mantra you want, either coupled with the vajra recitation or silently. At the end, focus on the vase and recite the following:
bumpé nang du orgyen tsépaktu mepa khor rigdzin gyé dang tsé lhatsok paktu mepa gyatso la zakar sharwa am
In the vase resides the guru from Oḍḍiyāna in the form of Amitāyus, surrounded by the eight vidyādharas and innumerable deities of long life, who all appear like the planets and stars reflected in a lake or like a reflection in a mirror.
melong la zuknyen nangwa tar salwé tuk sok hrih yik la ngak kyi korwar mik shing
In their hearts, visualize the life-force syllable hrīḥ surrounded by the mantra.
dak gi tukké ngak treng lé özer lugu gyü kyi tsul du trö
From the mantra garland at my heart, light rays radiate out like chains
bumpé lha nam kyi tukgyü kul
and invoke the wisdom mind of the deities in the vase.
lar yang özer trö womin dakpé zhing ngepa ngaden takpa gyün gyi khorlö yönten dang
Again, light rays radiate out and gather the qualities of the ever-turning wheel of the five perfections present in the Akaniṣṭha pure realm,
rigdzin dang drangsong nam kyi kalpar nepé tsechü
The essence of the life-force of the vidyādharas and ṛṣis, which enable them to remain alive for aeons,
tenpa nö kyi jikten dang
And all the elements, lustre, splendour, vital essence, longevity, renown and merit
yowa chü kyi semchen tamché kyi kham dang trakdang zijin dangchü tsé pal sönam tamché do khab len gyi chak ché langpa tar dü né
of the inanimate world—the vessel—and the animate beings—the contents—like a magnet attracting iron filings.
bumpé lhatsok la timpé khordé kyi dangchü tamché kechik nyi la chü du dril né lhatsok nam kyi ku lé chimé tsé yi dütsi gyün chenpo babpé bumpa yongsu gangwar gyur
All this is instantly transformed into the essence of all the vitality of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa and dissolves into the deities in the vase. Then a great stream of nectar descents from the bodies of the deities, which completely fills the vase.
om ah hung benza maha guru ayurjnana maha punyé tsé droom nri dza sarva siddhi hum
oṃ āḥ hūṃ vajra-mahā-guru āyur-jñāna-mahā-puṇye tsé bhrūṃ nṛ jaḥ sarva-siddhi hūṃ
hrih
hrīḥ
Recite as many times as you can the long-life approach mantra and the hrīḥ syllable.
Then, focusing on the activity vase:
lé bum du kechik gi chomdendé pema wangchen marpo yé yukto dang
In the activity vase, appears instantaneously the Bhagavān Mighty Padma,3 red in colour, holding a club in his right hand and in his left, in the threatening mudrā, a lasso.
yön dikdzub zhakpa dzinpé kur gyurpé tukké özer trö dü dön nyi jé
From his heart, rays of light radiate out and converge back, accomplishing the twofold benefit.
lar düpé ku lé dütsi gyün chenpo bab né bumpa yongsu gangwar gyur
As they radiate out and gather back once more, a great stream of nectar flows down from his body, completely filling the vase.
om benza kroda hayagriwa hulu hulu hung pé
oṃ vajra-krodha-hayagrīva hulu hulu hūṃ phaṭ
Having recited this no less than a hundred times, at the end, make offerings with the sixteen goddesses, either elaborately or concisely.
At the conclusion of the praise from the activity manual, recite:
hrih, öpakmé gön tulku chiwamé
Hrīḥ. Lord Amitābha, the immortal nirmāṇakāya,
drakpö kur zheng lhasin dulwé nyen
Arising in a wrathful form, the friend who tames gods and rākṣasas;
chenrezik wang hrih lé ngam ji ku
Mighty Avalokiteśvara, from hrīḥ you arise in the majestic form
tamdrin také zhé la chaktsal tö
Of Hayagrīva, laughing with the neigh of a horse—to you I prostrate and offer praise!
At the end of that, confess by reciting the hundred-syllable mantra three times. Then the deities melt into light with:
om ah hung
oṃ āḥ hūṃ
zhé dung zhal gyi chu chöyön du pulwé bum lha detong chenpö ngowor zhuwa bum chu dang yermé du gyur
Saying this, offer the water from the conch shell as drinking water. The deities of the vase melt into the essence of great bliss and emptiness, becoming inseparable from the vase water.
lé bum gyi lha ö du zhu né trowö dul tra rabtu gyur
The deities of the activity vase melt into light and transform into tiny wrathful deities the size of atoms.
Recite this and meditate upon it.
Summoning Longevity
dené dak dün gyi tukka né özer kar tserwa tak dzingpa tabu bün bün trö
From the heart centres of myself and the front-visualization, brilliantly shining rays of white light emanate in swirling, intertwining masses like a net of ropes.
womin dakpé zhing ngepa ngaden takpa gyün gyi khorlö yönten dang trinlé rigdzin drangsong nam kyi kalpar nepé tsechü
From the pure realm of Akaniṣṭha, with its five certainties, the rays of light gather the enlightened qualities and activities of the continuous wheel of eternity, and the vital essence of longevity of the vidyādharas and ṛṣis who live for aeons.

From the animate beings and the inanimate universe, they gather all of the elements, radiance, splendour and pure essences, and all the longevity, glory and merit, like iron filings drawn by a magnet.

Imagine that they dissolve into the longevity substances and into those who are to be protected.
Waving the longevity arrow, recite:

Recite the longevity dhāraṇī.

In this way, summon longevity. Then, after checking it through the long-life divination, the life-force is secured, and the longevity arrow is set in its receptacle, standing straight upright:

Āḥ. When our life-force wanders into the space of the five elements,

It is secured within the expanse of the five mothers:
yeshe nga la kyechi mé
The five primordial wisdoms know no birth and death,
ku ngé ying su tsé bepa
Our life is concealed in the space of the five kāyas,

And even the buddhas of the five families cannot see it!
dharma dhatu benza raksha

Thus stabilize the blessings.
Then, meditate that you are in nature inseparable from the deity of the maṇḍala. The very act of casting the flower of awareness means that you have actually entered the maṇḍala. Recite the following while scattering flowers:

Thus offer the flower.

Thus imagine that the five resultant qualities—the enlightened body, speech, mind, qualities and activities—of yourself and the maṇḍala to be entered become inseparable and of a single taste.

With this, invoke the siddhis and dissolve them. Bow to the deities of the maṇḍala with palms joined:

The History and Background
dené lar yang namkha dang nyampé semchen tamché la pen dö kyi lhaksam yi la chok tu chak né dampé chö nyenpa la zhukpa ni kyebu chenpö lam sönam tsemepé juk dok yin té rinchen trengwa lé
First, generate the excellent and pure motivation of the wish to benefit all sentient beings equal to the extent of space. Then, consider that listening to the sacred Dharma is the entranceway for the path of great beings and for gathering immeasurable merit. The Precious Garland states:4
semchen kham ni tsemé la
pen dö dé ni dendra o
As there are infinite kinds of beings,
The wish to help them is infinite, too.
zhé sungpé semchen gyi kham tsemepa tar dé la pen dö kyi lhaksam len chik kyepa ang tsemé dé
As this says, just as sentient beings are immeasurable, so too is the altruistic intention that wishes to benefit them immeasurable, even if it only arises once.
zangpo chöpa lé
The Aspiration to Good Actions says:
namkhé tartuk gyurpa chitsam par

dak gi mönlam ta yang detsam mo
Sentient beings are as limitless
As the boundless expanse of space;
So shall my prayers of aspiration for them
Be as limitless as their karma and afflictions!
zhé sungpa zhin semchen tamché yi la chak té senpar dzö
Therefore, while listening to this teaching, keep all sentient beings in mind.

It is important to listen while avoiding the three defects of the container, the six stains and the five wrong ways of remembering.

First, the three defects of the container:

nawa mi tö khabub tabü kyön

Not paying attention is to be like a container turned upside down.
Not remembering is to be like a container with a hole in it.
Mixing what you hear with mental afflictions is to be like a container with poison inside.

Second, the six stains:

Lack of any interest,
Outward distraction, inward tension,
And discouragement are the six stains.5
zhé so | mi dzinpa nga ni
Third, the five wrong ways of remembering:
tsik dzin ladön mi dzinpa dang
Remembering the words but forgetting the meaning,

remembering the meaning but forgetting the words,

kyön denam pang né tsul ji tabü nyen nyam na | do dongpo köpa lé
Having abandoned those faults, the manner in which you should listen is as the Gaṇḍavyūha states:6

These are the six practices of Tārā.

It is said in the infinite sūtras and tantras that the power of the mere sound of the sacred Dharma is such that even if animals hear it, they are liberated from the suffering of the lower realms.

Likewise, the mighty conqueror Longchenpa said:

If even beings who merely hear the sound of the drum of the Dharma
Will be liberated from the lower realms, there is no need to mention those who actually listen.7

Since all of you have a strong interest in the sound of the Dharma, this means you must have accumulated merit for many lifetimes. The master Śāntideva said:

This free and well-favoured human form is difficult to obtain.
Now that you have the chance to realize the full human potential,
If you don’t make good use of this opportunity,
How could you possibly expect to have such a chance again?8

Right now, this excellent support of a precious human life endowed with all the freedoms is an opportunity so rare you might not attain it again for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes, as in the example of obtaining the chance to use a wish fulfilling jewel. So now that you have found such an opportunity, it is vital that you exert yourself in the methods that lead to liberation and the state of omniscience.

The way to go about this is first to understand that you need only to rely on this support of the human body, with its six elements. The master Vāgīśvarakīrti says:

“Dharma practitioners with dull faculties,
For as long as they remain in saṃsāra,
Need to accumulate merit,
Which will certainly produce awakening.
In saṃsāra, you cannot find anything
More important than your life.
Therefore, you must urgently engage
In the many methods to cheat death.”9

Moreover, in general, there are many conditions for obstacles, and in particular, the conditions for untimely death are: the exhaustion of life-force, karma, and merit alone, or the exhaustion of two of these together, or all three.

To restore exhausted karma, there are practices to ransom the life-force, such as saving lives of small aquatic animals;

sönam zepa la chöjin gyi pelwa lasokpé sowa dang
And to restore exhausted merit, there are remedies such as increasing it through making offerings.
dedak nyi nyamdu zepa ni | nyenpo dé dang dé sowar sungpa lé
When two of these are exhausted simultaneously, it is taught that they are remedied by their respective antidotes.

From among these, when the object of restoration is the life-force itself, four points are mentioned in the tantras: 1) the conditions for the depletion of the life-force, 2) the signs of the depletion of the life-force, 3) the healer—the master who restores the life-force, and 4) the method for restoring the life-force.

If a master with these three qualities summons [the life-force], it will be gathered.

The Buddha, with his skill in means and his great compassion, has taught innumerable practices that accomplish immortality; among these, this practice belongs to the Vajrayāna teachings of the Early Translation tradition.

Within this there are the three great traditions of the lineage: the Words of the Buddha that were spoken directly, the treasures that were authorised and the blessed pure visions.

For the history of this extraordinary teaching, the Prophecies That Bear the Seal of Secrecy10 mentions:

“In the south will appear an incarnation named Özer,
Who will liberate beings through the profound teachings of the Heart Essence.
He will lead whoever is connected to him to the pure land of the vidyādharas.”

Thus, Jigme Lingpa11 was known as someone who had revealed the path of the four-stage practice that is based on the heart-essence perfection stage and the generation phase of the vidyādharas. The revealed prophecies of the vidyādhara Dzamling Dorje12 state:

“In Tibet, in the heart of Uru and Yoru, a bodhisattva named Padma will be born.
He will protect the teachings of the Nyingma school, and tame beings through skilful means.”

These vajra words testify to Jigme Lingpa’s authenticity. After the glorious King of Dharma from Uḍḍiyāna and his consort bestowed empowerment on him, Rangjung Dorje Jigme Lingpa had a vision which was like an optical illusion, wherein he flew to the Jarung Khashor stūpa.13 As to whether this came in post-meditation or in a dream, they are the same in that they are both illusory in nature.

Promise to correctly observe all the samaya commitments by repeating the following three times:

Whatever the guru, chief of the maṇḍala, commands,

Out of gratitude for having excellently received this profound long-life empowerment, present a maṇḍala offering.
With this, instruct them to present an offering. Then conclude as follows:

Please dedicate all the merit of having successfully completed this long-life empowerment, along with all the merit accumulated throughout the three times, for the benefit of sentient beings as vast as space.
If you wish to accumulate this long-life empowerment many times, do as follows:
First offer a maṇḍala and recite the request:

Padmasambhava, immortal protector…
Then the disciples generate themselves as the deity, followed by the descent of wisdom, the invocation of longevity, the long-life vase, the long-life nectar and the long-life pills, concluding with the sealing and the verses of auspiciousness. This can be done according to the supplementary arrangement.

Excellently revealed, may it be granted as the crowning ornament
Of sublime beings, so fortunate and faithful.

May they take it to heart with vivid faith and bodhicitta
And resolve to devote themselves to restoring the failing longevity and life-force of beings to be guided!
Through these supreme, unsurpassed skilful means,
May all be delivered from the fear of death.

Thus concludes 'The Wish-Fulfilling King of Power Who Spontaneously Accomplishes the Two Aims, A Method for Bestowing the Long-Life Empowerment for 'The Vase of Immortal Life: The Long-Life Practice of the Vidyādharas', which arose from the cycle of teachings of the treasury of space as the mind treasure of the great vidyādhara Jigme Lingpa. At the behest of the guru vajradhara Jigme Śākya Senge, it was compiled by Jigme Trinle Özer. The scribe was the faithful Sangye Zangpo, also called Sangye Ösal. Through this merit, may all beings come to possess the good fortune of enjoying the glorious splendour of the Immortal Lord. Let it be virtuous! Sarva maṅgalaṃ.

- 'Chü' (bcud) is the vital force, quintessence, quality, potency or nutrition, of both living things and inanimate matter in the environment, like rocks and minerals. According to Dagyab Rinpoche in Buddhist Symbols, pp. 6–8, "Chü really means 'essence-juice and vigour', or 'contents'. Originally the word was probably used to describe the qualities of plants or food, but it is also used in a transferred sense for the pure 'quality' of living beings, environments, energies, etc." Taking 'essences' to support your life is called chülen—rasāyana—or rejuvenation practice. There is also the 'chü'—'vital force' of long life: the longevity possessed, for example, by the vidyādharas and ṛṣis. In the practice, all are fused into one life-force energy. The Long-Life Empowerment says: "Imagine that the vital force of longevity of the vidyādharas and ṛṣis, who live for aeons... all the constituent elements, the radiance and presence and pure essence, all the long life and auspiciousness and merits, of the whole inanimate universe and all the sentient beings living within it, are gathered, like iron filings swept towards a magnet, and dissolve into you... - The long-life arrow (Tib. mda’ dar) is not simply a ritual ornament, but an instrument for making measurements. Before the practice, the arrow is measured, then afterwards it is pulled to see how long it can be stretched. If there is a noticeable difference, it means you have accomplished the practice. ↑
- 'Tsé tra (tshe phra)' is the long-life divination. Generally 'tra' is a sign or vision perceived in water or the sky or often in a mirror. It is a form of divination but not performed with dice or a mala. Some people, often women, have this gift naturally, without having to develop it through practice; others simply cannot see the signs. By practising for a week or ten days, it is possible to acquire the ability, and after some time the 'tra' can even appear in the mind, directly. How to analyze or interpret the signs is another matter altogether. According to the Longchen Nyingtik, there is a practice of 'tra' through Tséringma. Here, after practising the tsédrup and tséguk, we check, through 'tra', to see what the life-span will be. ↑
